The arranged two newspaper interviews and a tv interview for me last year. I wasn't concerned about that stuff, so I didn't spend any personal time doing it. I was all about the person in front of the computer.
While I would hope that the Top 10 are getting friends and family in front of computers, I would also imagine that the winning candidate will not take a single vote for granted.
There are many, many reasons to use every resource to get the word out.
Selfishly, I hope that the Top 10 do an excellent job promoting Careerbuilder and Disney Parks because I don't want this to be their last contest. If the candidates all only work to rally 25 people each to vote for them over and over... then the reach for the sponsors will be 250 people. WOW. They could have made more impressions with a sign on a busy street. Why bother with another contest?
But furthermore, wouldn't each candidate have to assume that the other candidates would have as many or MORE friends and family? It is possible that the non-friends/non-family votes will be the difference between 3rd and 4th. Why sit and wait for those extra votes? Go get them!
If you only do what every other candidate is doing (including what the sponsors are doing for everyone) then the best you should be able to hope for is a tie.
Another reason to promote with local media: We are on Day 11 of the voting period. Which email would you rather send to friends and family today?
1. Hey guys... thanks for voting for me for the last 11 days. I need you to sit at your computer for 10 more days. Thanks. I really appreciate it.
OR
2. Exciting news! Our campaign is going so strong that I've been asked to appear on "Good Morning Ourtown" tomorrow morning! Tune in at 7AM. I am so grateful for your help. Keep voting! I'll have more updates on how the word is spreading tomorrow!
I think version 2 gets your friends and family more inspired... so its a triple bonus... more exposure for sponsors, more exposure for your campaign (and those critical extra votes), and something to inspire your friends and family to keep voting.
Another thought about Day 11. If you haven't already contacted all of your friends and family at this point and you are not rallying them to vote for you, I don't know what to tell you! So... do you think that every other candidate is just hoping that's enough? Or do you think there are some candidates out on Sunset Blvd. passing out flyers? If Amy Kate got only 10 extra votes from that effort, you are now 10 votes behind her. (Assuming she still put in her own hours voting for herself too)
Bottom line, every vote matters. This year, there are not 25 winners. You could argue that there are 3 winners... but in my mind there is only one winner. Do you want to leave a single vote on the table? Are you prepared to lose by one vote?
Ok... um... I guess I'll put my soapbox away. (Thanks for the loaner Tripp)
