Heres a story that I thought we should all hear.

On our reasent stay at POP in May, we were standing on the balcony outside of our room watching a mother and 9 ducklings walk around.
I went inside for a drink and my wife hollered 5 of the duclings fell
into the sewer drain.

I called the front desk and informed them of the matter. An hour later 2
maintanence workers appeared on the scene, they couldn"t get the drain cover off. Two more joined them and one of the lady CM;s appeared, now there was five. Next thing I saw was two of the vehicles that deliver stuff to the CM,s appeared. Now we have 7 hovering around the drain. They worked for hours tring to get the ducks out. No luck on this day.

Next day several more maintenance workers and CM,s finally got the drain
cover off, worked at it for 3 hours to get them out sticks nets etc. no luck

later in the day women life guards and ladyCM,s appeared, the sewer war very small and one of the life guards squeexed down the drain and passed the ducklings up one at a time, and the and a person from the AK appeared and took the ducklings to the AK for treatment. We spent more time watching this on those two days then we did the parks. Lot of Magic here.

That's so great. :) It's sad, because ducklings fall down storm drains all the time every year. I wish towns/resorts/cities would consider a mesh net to put over drains at that season if there's a nest known to be nearby. of course those are hard to keep clean so they never would. :confused3

Awww! I'm so glad they made the effort and didn't give up! Thanks for sharing!

Aww I'm glad! :goodvibes I enjoyed staying at the POP very much because there were always ducklings and frogs around. :) Also we saw some herons as well. :goodvibes

That is such a sweet story! :goodvibes

I'm an animal person, and I just love hearing stories about people doing extraordinary things to save an innocent creature.

I also get so upset when I see kids (and sadly, adults) treating the animals, particularly the ducks, poorly at the parks.

Stories like this give some faith that most people will do the right thing.

Same here, that really irks me when I see people mistreating those silly ducks!

What a wonderful story!!! Great job for calling the front desk...a lot of people wouldn't have bothered, sad to say. I'm so glad we are staying at the Pop!

My daughter and I are the ones that are always telling parents to keep their kids from tormenting the ducks/critters at the parks. I can't believe how many people allow their children to chase helpless ducks. There have been many times I've had to talk to teens that are chasing mommy ducks with sticks and laughing. Very scary when you think of what types of adults they will turn into. Parents need to teach empathy towards creatures. It will carry over to how they treat others.

I think I've probably got the worst WDW duck mistreating story of all . . . when we were there in 2004 . . . we were at the smoking area by the reflecting pool at MK and there was a CM there sweeping up. All of the sudden he takes a couple of quick steps and kicks a duck right over the fence! I mean ran up and KICKED it, like he was going for a field goal! We were doing a Magical Gathering so my father ran to find a supervisor while I kept an eye on the duck and also an eye on the CM to make sure he didn't leave. My father came back with someone with a radio and the CM tried to deny it, but by that time the duck was flopping in the water right next to the retainer wall. :( I'm hoping they were able to catch the duck (and fire the CM!) because I think it had a broken wing, hopefully they could do something at AK.

Oh my goodness!!! :sad2: :scared1: :furious:

Good Job to those CM's at POP!!! That's great that they didn't give up!!!

I hope that kicking CM got his butt kicked (not literally) right out the front gate of WDW!!!

I was on Discovery Island (Disney's old Zoo near FW) one time and saw a kid jamming a stick down a pelican's pouch. I yelled at the kid and his mommy got mad at me and said "What's he doing wrong?" I guess she thought it was cute that her brat was going to injure a pelican.

When I was a kid, we were coming back on the TS rafts (in DL) and this teenager's purse started dripping. The CM asked to see in her purse. She was trying to steal a baby duck. So sad that people have little regard for animals.

Good job the the OP. Nice to see people care about the health and safety of animals.

Good For You! I would have backed you up! My husband doesn't like going to the parks with me since it's inevitable that I'll almost get myself beat up by telling parents to teach their kids some kindness! I just get so upset seeing how others get a kick from causing stress/injury to animals. What is up with that?

I think I posted this somewhere else but when we were there in 2004 we saw a momma duck and her babies on the other side of the wrought iron fence at the bus stop in front of Magic Kingdom. The momma was very distressed and kept herding the babies away from the fence and then would walk back over by this bush. Well, there was a meter hole that should have had a cover over it and one of her babies had fallen in and couldn't get out. I lifted my son, who was four at the time, over the fence and he walked over to the hole, gently pulled out the baby and put it on the ground in front of the mommy duck. She quickly herded him over to the other babies and they took off in a line quacking. It happened to be our last day and we were leaving to go home - it made us all feel good to know that we helped the duckies, but especially my son, because everyone watching applauded him!
