Does anyone else have this issue. Sometimes we have family and friends that come over and we smell their laundry detergent/fabric softener smell and love the smell. We ask them what they use and how much and we will buy it but out clothing does keep the smell. We have city water and yes we shower frequently. Whats the matter with our clothing. Doesn't it like the detergent smells.

I've noticed this before and I've come to the conclusion that after a very short time you get used to the smells (detergent, air fresheners, perfume...) you use in your own family and become immune to them. I think that's why companies have come out with those air fresheners that alternate between three different scents throughout the day and that kind of thing--if you're not smelling the same thing all the time you will notice the smell more.
I got some new potpourri for my house and enjoyed the fragrance for a week or so and then thought it wasn't smelling anymore. Then I went away on business for a few days, came back and when I walked into the house I REALLY noticed the potpourri smell again.

I'll bet your clothes smell just as nice as your friends' but you just aren't noticing anymore.

I am with you! I am constantly making sure my and my kids clothing smells good! I by all kinds of fabric softener and air fresheners. I think I may be obsessed!

Softened water makes all the difference in the world, and believe it or not, so does vinegar in your rinse cycle instead of fabric softener. Everyone always remarks about our clothes smelling great and fresh, but not overpowering. I use Tide soap, original scent, and that is what our clothes smell like (sniffing my shirt right now!). If I use fabric softener, which I do every blue moon, then they have a faint smell, but it is more perfume smelling. I don't know what the vinegar does, but if you use just a little, little---your clothes smell and feel wonderful. Also if you don't overdry your clothes, they retain the fresh smell longer. Just like someone who washes their hair but it doesn't completely dry underneath and you can really smell their shampoo or conditioner and it smells great!
