Clothes dryer repair?

Yup, old thread but for those just reading this, playing home repairman on any sort of high voltage appliance is a REALLY bad idea. Clearly you need to unplug it before working on it to avoid being electrocuted. If you mess up the repair, you could set your house on fire and insurance will NOT cover any botched DIY repairs.

I disagree. There's a lot that CAN be done DIY if one takes appropriate precautions (either unplugging the appliance or turning off the circuit breaker).

If one is uncomfortable working around electricity, then sure, call in a pro. But to say it's a "really bad idea"? Sorry, disagree.

I feel like it is a really bad idea for anyone without the necessary knowledge/skill to do a specific type of repair to assume they can. You can be seriously injured or killed attempting to perform various home repair tasks for which you aren't qualified. Skillful DIY people know what they can/can't do and when to call a professional.

It's a dryer, you either unplug it or turn off the circuit breaker. It's not rocket science. As I said, I'm 70 (female) and I managed to change the dryer element without any issues.

We've repaired a few of our household appliances ourselves, including the dryer. YouTube or RepairClinic.com are great places to get how-to help. I will say we do change out our vent tubing every 3-4 years and that usually helps a ton.

I've fixed both our washer and dryer multiple times. There's so little to them once you get the thing apart. Glad to see someone else taking it on themselves.

Heck, DD took our washer apart on her own, a couple of years ago. She lost her wedding (engagement?) ring and couldn't find it anywhere, but she'd been doing laundry so she was 99.99% sure it was in the washer. She pulled up the YouTube video, took the washer apart, didn't find the ring, so put it all back together and it was fine. Still runs strong to this day.

I found her ring later that evening. She'd baked bread the day before, and the ring must have been pulled off while kneading, because guess where I found her ring, as I was slicing bread for dinner?? 🍞💍
