Please forgive me but I have a question about how the moderators decide to close a thread. It seems on a number of boards, threads have been closed very quickly in what seem to be very level headed discussions yet others go on and on, while sometimes being very nasty. Are all mods given the same instructions as to how to moderate their boards?

I am not trying to stir up trouble, just curious.

I am not a moderator, but from what i can gather, A lot of times people ASK that a board be closed down and a moderator will honor that request. I also am guessing that since SO many posts happen and their are only so many moderaters i'm not sure all posts get "caught" by the moderators..they have a big job on their hands with us wild Diser's!:rotfl:

Also It is probably most likely up to each moderators discretion some what about what is appropriate and what is not. I think The Dis (from what I can tell and have experienced) tries to keep this board "family friendly" to some extent ..in the true disney spirit of things....I too have seen threads that should be shut down and aren't. Have not had so much experince with threads that were going fine and got shut down, but perhaps the moderators were worried about where a thread "Could" go and dindt' want the thread to get there. Know what I mean?

It's all just my own specualtion though. Hopefully a Moderator will weigh in please!!

What we see often is threads that are rehashing topics of previously-locked threads will be locked immediately.

Ok, but the Always thread... that was a riot. It got shut down quick and I can't see why, so I have to agree with the OP.

Anyone know why?

I haven't a clue. :confused3

But one thing that I can tell you is that each board is moderated as a stand alone entity, and it is up to the mods and the posters of that board to decide on what does and does not "go" on their board.

We have the DIS Posting Guidelines to use as a starting off point. But from there, it will depend on the individual boards.

What is permitted here on the CB may not be permitted on the Budget Board. For example, in recent weeks, there have been a number of threads started on the Budget Board regarding eBay auctions for GACs and fast passes. We have not permitted these threads to go on on the Budget Board since the eBayer in question was not a member and could not defend or explain themselves. AND the threads were becoming debates over whether these auctions should or should not be reported, whether the eBayer was a cheat or an entrepreneur, and so on. While we do not permit threads that ultimately become debates on the Budget Board, it may be perfectly acceptable on the CB or other boards. That is one reason why you may see threads on one board closed even though you know that it would have been acceptable on another board.

I hope that this clears things up a bit for some of you...

It helps some, thanks.

In this case would it be acceptable to start the thread again on the other board?

You would probably have to ask the moderators of that board to know for sure. Also, do be aware that there are boards that are moderated together. For example: The Dining Plan Board is just a sub-board of the Restaurants Board. They're administered as a single unit.

If they're enjoying the debate and not getting into any personal attacks, then what goes into the decision of closing it as opposed to moving it to the CB where it might be allowed to continue? Just curious. I like a good debate, though. :teeth:
