When you don't have a car on property, what is the best way to get to Huntington Beach? Is that where the Rockin Baja is that was discussed on the podcast? And is it any good?

I won't have a car either, I was thinking of doing this grayline tour

I vote newport beach...on our last trip we rented a car and the drive to about 35-40 min and you pretty much stay on harbor....we spent about 4-5 hours there, the beach was great, lots of little stores, and some beautiful houses to see....we are going back when we return in may, but plan to spend longer there this time....:goodvibes

Second Newpoert Beach. Went last July. Great beach, not too far, not crowded at all. This June trying Santa Monica Pier and maybe Manhattan Beach.

Anyone have any input about LaJolla, Pacific Beach, Coronado Island?????????????

How do those beaches compare to Huntington Beach, Newport Beach???????????????????????

Thanks very much in advance!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:goodvibes

FWIW, from HydroGuy:

"A good beach in San Diego for families is La Jolla Shores. If you go there, be sure to walk (or drive) down a little to La Jolla Cove and the rocky point. I used to live about 2 miles from there. Great place. :sunny: Parking is very tight on weekends. Do a weekday if possible.”

We did Huntington and Newport - preferred Huntington. There is a car rental in DTD for Alamo - I'd rent just for the day (ours was under $30). They are really close - 15 minutes or so. I posted pics of both in the trip report (link in sig).

Huntington and Newport are both gorgeous, just different. Huntington has a long stretch of public beach with no houses between the highway and the sand/water. Makes for a nice drive (windows down, smell the fresh salt air). Also a nice pier area with laid-back surf-city vibe.
Newport has beautiful beachfront homes as the PP stated, plus Balboa peninsula and island, with a great little beach-town feel.
I think it depends on what you want. If it's a great drive and time on the sand, I'd vote Huntington. If you want to stroll around and window shop, Newport's a good bet.

The San Diego beaches are great too, but probably not worth the drive when you have the OC beaches so much closer.

PHXscuba,
... wishing she was smelling the salt air along with you ...

I agree with the above post.Santa Monica and Venice are for character watching. Better than Hollywood and Vine.

La Jolla Shores is an awesome beach. I'm not crazy about Pacific Beach, and Coronado is ok, but it's really more of a resort area than a good beach area. All are an hour or more from the DLR.

Moonlight Beach in Encinitas is great, and a bit closer. It has a beach, a large parking lot, a playground, lifeguards, bathrooms/showers, and a snack bar (that's usually only open seasonally). It's also really easy to get to, and a great family beach. We live in the area and always go to either Moonlight or La Jolla Shores.
