Hi everyone! We are considering a trip out west this summer, mostly for my FIL, who has always wanted to see the sights out there. Of course, I am trying to figure a way to fit Disneyland in, even though the IL's are not remotely interested in visiting. MIL looovvvveees the beach, and they've only ever visited Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico beaches. I was thinking perhaps we could stay at a hotel on the beach and then the IL's could have a few relaxing beach days while DH and I took the kids to DLR and DCA. Any ideas?

Oh, for reference, we will likely be traveling around the beginning of June, and travel party will be me, DH, MIL, FIL, DS6 and DD4. We will be on a fairly tight budget, so reasonably priced hotels are preferred. TIA! :goodvibes

Huntington Beach and Newport Beach are the closest. Laguna Beach is a little farther, but much nicer. Sorry, I don't have any opinions on places to stay. I would look into Lastminutetravel.com, Expedia and Priceline.

I like Corona Del Mar. I grew up in nearby Irvine, and went to Corona all the time. Great family beach.

Corona Del Mar is the perfect crescent shaped beach. Just north is the Newport Beach pier. They are separated by a jetty. I can't remember any hotels around there though. What's nice is that Newport has a little concrete boardwalk that has greasy food like corn dogs and things and a place where you can take sunset cruises for fun. We did this one year and loved it! It was like $10-15 per person and so worth it! They show you million dollar homes around the Newport Bay and then take you onto the ocean and watch the sunset. Know that the water in the Pacific is much colder than on the Atlantic or Gulf side. It usually is in the 60's!!!!! It takes a little getting use to. I love it though. The water seems much clearer there.

Here is a picture from the beach on CDM...

If there is any way to push your trip later in the summer, I'd recommend it. Orange County is known for June Gloom along the coast. (DLR will be fine since it's inland.) It's really not fun to stay on the beach shivering with your towel wrapped around you. You are likely to have better weather if you can wait until July.

We have stayed at the Hyatt Huntington Beach, which is a great hotel about 25 minutes from Disneyland. Lots of fun kids activities, pools, etc. You might find more options in the Newport Beach area. If you are looking for a less expensive hotel, you could go inland a little, maybe check out Costa Mesa.

Happy planning!
