Day 4 - Wednesday - Headed home. :(

As is always the case, it takes us a few nights to get onto Disney time. Last night I felt like we were finally on vacation, only to have to look toward leaving this afternoon. The kids finally adjusted to staying up later and got a good night's sleep and slept in a little. The blackout curtains really are effective at the Lodge.

I had the room all packed, so I woke at 7 and enjoyed a last cup of coffee. Do yourself a favor and be sure to use bottled water. I accidentally used the tap on Monday and it was awful! Also, I like a rich cup and the Joffrey's, while decent in the room and at RF, just doesn't cut it. I wanted to try the pods but next time I'll bring my own. Also, bring plenty of sugar if you need it. And a corkscrew for beverages unless you want to cork that bottle of wine with a corkscrew purchased in the Mercantile (they did have them).

We quickly got dressed and zipped up the bags. Downstairs the airline checkin was fast and easy. My DME instructions came on Tues., then Wed. there was another copy with luggage tags and boarding passes hanging on our door (which I failed to open until after the Airline checkin desk had already reprinted everything). From there, we dropped a carryon bag with the valet and were off to breakfast at RF around 9. It was moving well, but sort of chaotic. They really should expand and organize this space. The waffle selection is good. I wish we'd known to ask to sub the sausage for the bacon. The kids like bacon but wouldn't eat it. I do also like that RF is small, so I was able to settle the kids with their food and go back for mine without much hassle. I had milk, coffee, and the egg/cheese/bacon croissant. Everthing was hot. Waffles looked yummy, but I needed the protein.

Here we left RF for more time in the lobby. I noticed a tour going on. For some reason I thought the ranger didn't do them on Wed, but perhaps I was mistaken. I think all of the upholstered furniture in the lobby is fairly new. Very comfy, updated, and in good repair. I know it is different than in 2010. We also loved the ground level porch overlooking the creek with rockers. Enjoyed a few minutes there with the quiet while DDs shopped the pin cart. All of those CMs were very friendly. Then out to the falls for one last view of the lake, the falls, and the geyser at 10am. That meant it's time for going to FW for DD9's Trail Ride. We waited maybe 15 min for a bus.

I had some questions about the bus transportation to FW, so here is a good time to clarify. The bus at Stop #1 picks up at WL and goes direct to the FW Settlement Depot (Trails End, Hoop De Doo, lakeside area). Then it's label changes to "Settlement Yellow" or "Outpost Yellow" and it goes out to the the Outpost at FW (FW checkin, Tri Circle D ranch and trail rides). The bus does not the change to say "Wilderness Lodge" but if you get on the "Yellow" bus at the Outpost it returns to the Settlement and continues to WL.

So . . . from the Settlement area, take the WL bus. From the Outpost take the Yellow bus to get back to WL. It is a quick ride. 3 min from WL to Settlement. Another 5 min to Outpost. The return trip - we lined up at 12:30 at the Outpost and were at the Lodge by 12:50.

Our Magical Express pickup was scheduled for 2:00. We arrived at the Lodge and there was more begging for those great Mickey short cartoons. I grabbed some snacks at the Mercantile, a WL branded shirt, and retrieved our bag from bell services (they were prompt and helpful). We met a CM from home! Then we had a wait. The DME bus arrived late at 2:10, and we had a stop at the Poly. Total time to MCO was almost an hour. Then we stopped at the food court. Be careful with this!!! From arrival at MCO we had 2 hours until departure. We got stuck in the security line for FOREVER and I felt crunched for time. In the end we had about 15 minutes before we boarded, but that's a bit close.

Final thoughts -

1) I have to say that the resort and transportation CMs were ALL courteous, went out of their way to be helpful, prompt, and generally great. Our theme park CM experience in that department was fine, just not as great as the resort.

2) The new upholstery and linens were great. The furniture (drawers in particular), sinks, pool chairs, and much of the pathway lighting (as well as perhaps the outdoor speakers) seem to be getting old. I hope some of this gets some attention soon. As all CMs seem to be on the ball, I'm sure that will happen as the time is right.

3) The landscaping is looking pristine. However, the presence of workers (contractors?) all over WDW out of "show" character really was noticeable this trip. I think WDW is slipping in that department. Or maybe I just have a more critical eye.

4) Transportation was hassle free. We didn't head to many parks. I did see people who seemed to wait too long. Or 2 buses arriving for the same destination. However, we didn't have a single issue.

5) For August, I would enjoy a south facing lobby woods view (For Frozen fireworks), or even a lobby standard view, but would avoid a woods view ending in 100 - 120 (even numbers) due to the scaffolding that started today.

6) Dining at the WL is really good. I didn't love out RF food, but it was serviceable with decent variety. TL, Trout Pass, and WCC were great.

7) The wifi network needs work. There is a public space network and a guest network. Our room had good signal for both. When one would get sluggish, I switched to the other. I think it times out quickly. I finally learned that it helps to completely log off and restart your session each time you need access. Leaving a browser open for longer than a few minutes resulted in lots of stalling out.

8) Mousekeeping (Brenda) was great. We had extra towels and toiletries every day. The room was clean each day by midafternoon.

Thanks for reading. Maybe photos coming soon! It's time for school to start. :(

Glad to hear the Blue Flag worked for you and I love CR, too so if you do make a switch, join us on the CR/BLT thread anytime. WL and CR are both great choices.

:goodvibes

The day you leave/arrive home can be a rough transition. Home is NOT Disney!

Scaffolding again? I feel like every visit I've seen scaffolding somewhere: roof repairs, painting, window cleaning. I hardly notice it anymore:rolleyes:. Looking forward to your final update.

How sweet! I bet the boys won't sleep very well tonight. Do you think they'll remember in the morning? Your ticker says over a week - are you leaving tomorrow to go somewhere else first?

Hmm...I wonder if my ticker is from last year's trip. We are going to WL from Aug 7 to the 14th and then to POP from the 14th to the 16th. I now have to check my ticker!

The boys will probably remember. They still get confused about napping versus sleeping. They think everytime they sleep (nap or bed time) and when they get up, it starts a new day. So, when they got up from nap they thought it was tomorrow and we should go. We played tag and soccer outside for over an hour to wear them out and now they are finishing a Handy Manny show, so hopefully they will go right to sleep.

Yes, they are always fixing something!! Which is good as it keeps up the Lodge.

We came home Sunday afternoon after a long weekend there. Such a nice stay.

We also noticed many, many construction workers around the Lodge. I think it will get busier from here on. I also think they will be taking some Courtyard rooms out of inventory.

From our room, we noticed that part of the decorative structure had fallen off the side of the building and was laying on the roof. This was inner courtyard. There were also two pairs of panties on that roof!! Why do people do that?? We told one of the CMs about it as it looked like that piece would fall off the roof and they said starting Sunday, they will be fixing and updating around the Lodge. That is probably what Bluefairy saw before she left.

Lots, and lots of work being done on the Lodge. But it will be beautiful when completed. :artist:

View from 5092 over roof. Beyond is the main driveway. To the right is one last room and the front parking area.

Thumper on pillow

Hidden Mickey in the bathroom tile. DDs had a blast searching the room and Lodge for them.

TinkerBell H20+ products. The whole resort line is available for sale. These trial sizes are teensie compared to the Aquatics set we had in 2010. I'm not a fan of the grapefruit.

Hidden Mickey in Roaring Fork

Summer blooms at the Lodge

Silver Creek looking lovely.

Cute coffee mug (front and back)

Love this one but they are all too big to keep coffee warm.

Considered buying an insulated sipper.

Evening on the beach.

Very excited for our trip back to WL - our first trip with our daughters! Staying 8/23 through 8/29. Thanks for all the fantastic information on this thread!

They finally have a new coffee cup - how exciting!

That wasn't there last month. Thank you for posting your great review and photos. Your posts were very helpful and answered many questions for people, BlueFairy. Sorry you had to leave and return to reality. You'll have to stay longer next time;)

The view from Territory Lounge during a thunderstorm. Me: "Is this unusual?" Waitress, "No, It's just the way the water always washed off the roof." Looked like a lot, but that is one large roof.

Charcuterie plate at Territory Lounge. Blue Cheese, Cheddar Cheese, Buffalo sausage, venison sausage, walnut toast, pickles, liver pate, mustard chutney. $13. Kids' watermelon and Habanero Lime Margarita in the background.

Lovely perspective of the large fireplace from the 5th floor.

"Here's to Kook and all you wonderful Lodgers! Cheers!" (Gold Margarita from Trout Pass)

Fire Rock Geyser with the MK Launch (left) & Blue Flag Launch (right) in the background

Disney bunnies are everywhere. Is it just me, or are there ears strangely tiny?

The Springs, bubbling away under the lobby bridge.

Hidden Mickeys, Moose, and Hidden Thumper in the rug

Hidden Mickeys and Hidden Bambi. (my favorite)

Lincoln Log masterpiece.

The view toward 5091 from our balcony. From this perspective, the Frozen fireworks are to the left (Straight out if you are seated on the balcony).
Actually, now that I am looking at the room map, I'm realizing that we had an upgrade. According to that we had a Woods View. We paid for standard. YAY pixie dust!! It was a great location.

THE END! Thanks for following along. I enjoyed sharing Disney geekdom with all of you nice Lodgers.

Your ticker is good now. I hope you have safe and easy travels today. We'd love to hear from you when you get a chance.

Wonder how many panties, etc… they collect in a week? Do the Values have more/less? Hope you told Mike about your discovery:sad2:

You must have gotten some breaking news for us, right?
:listen:

You're welcome and I'll add your dates to the Lodgers' Log in POST 2. How many times have you stayed at WL and when was your last stay?

THE END! Thanks for following along. I enjoyed sharing Disney geekdom with all of you nice Lodgers.

Thank you for sharing your trip with us. Your pictures are wonderful. That one view of the creek looking toward the lodge looks very peaceful and relaxing. :goodvibes This is why we love the WL so much. :)

I'm sorry to ask this question, I've looked at the pictures and didn't see what I am looking for. We will be at the Wilderness Lodge 11/15-11/22. We are on the dinning plan so really only need to worry about a few snacks for the little one. Most we can pack or I can see we can buy, but what about gogurts? Any place I can get that? I really don't want to do a Garden Grocer order as there isn't a ton we need but right now he is on a gogurt kick.

Thanks!

Every brand I saw at WL and MK was Dannon. Gogurt is Yoplait. I don't remember seeing any Danimals Squeezable, but I wasn't looking. They had Dannon Light and Fit in the Mercantile and Dannon Oikos at RF. The parks have Danimals on some of the kids' meals.

Thank you so much for your quick reply! I'll try the other brands now and if I can't get him to switch over, guess a garden grocer order is in my future!

Does anyone know if there is pole fishing on the dock at WL? I could have sworn I remember that in the past, but can't seem to find it on 1st couple posts? :upsidedow

Hello Lodgers!

Well, today we are sitting the lobby of this beautiful lodge waiting for Magical Express to pick up for our return flight home. As always, we are sad to leave the World - but this time feel a bit better because (after much research and thought) we finally took the plunge and became DVC members! Yay! And we already have one of
Our next trips booked! Woot! Several years ago when the announcement was made that they would be building villas at Grand Floridian we began researching and then got even more serious in 2013 when we watched the build happening. We are excited to have GFVs for our home resort. Yay!

As we depart today - I thought I would give my final "review" of the lodge, for what it is worth. :)

1. THEMING/AESTHETICS - In this area the lodge is awesome! The lobby is truly impressive as well as the building and surrounding areas from the outside. Disney has done a fantastic job of making you feel like your are deep in the woods of the Northwest!

2. POOL/WATER FEATURES - Again, gorgeous! Such a natural feel that fits in seamlessly with the surroundings. We were a bit sad that the first 6 or 7 days of our trip were without the stream and waterfall but were glad to be able to enjoy it the last 4 or 5 days with it. Here is what it looks like today:

3. ROOMS - Overall, I would rate the rooms as "good". They are a tad on the small side but come with the features you are accustomed to at the deluxe level. Storage space was adequate, though the closets could definitely have a better configuration to help out here. The beds are very comfortable. While vacationing, I am often in awful back pain after a night's sleep on a hotel bed. Fortunately, the beds at WL are what we have come to love at the other deluxes. Bathrooms were nice, only negative was the toilet. The darn thing never seemed to flush right! LOL. The balcony space was a tad on the small size, but adequate forums to enjoy a few relaxing moments in the evenings.

4. CAST MEMBERS - Excellent! This is a standard we have come to expect at Disney. Very, very seldom in all our WDW trips have we encountered a CM that didn't meet or exceed our expectations. This trip was no different. Many of these people so clearly love that jobs!

5. FOOD - we all of our table service meals away from the lodge but had several quick service meals at Roaring Fork. My favorite food item was the turkey and Swiss sandwich (substitute the bun for the multigrain bread) - so yummy! The Wilderness Salad is also delish. :) The pizzas, burgers, fries and chicken sandwiches were all acceptable. Your basic quick service fare. My hubby is has a shellfish and gluten allergy and then accommodated him well...GF pizza, salads, burgers, etc. Some of the staff in the Roaring Fork were some of our favorite!
So personable and helpful. The restaurant was surprisingly small, but well run and we never had a problem finding a seat even at busy time. You order and pay for your food and then are given a table tent number and they you food is delivered to your table. (If you order is to go, you are given a pager and pick up at the to-go counter when it buzzes.). Very organized!

6. BOAT TRANSPORTATION - We utilized this service basically every day, usually multiple times. LOVED IT. We never waited longer than 5 minutes, normally we walked up to a boat waiting or could see one pulling in. Seriously, a phenomenal service. And the boat captains were great! Such personalities, especially the singing captains!

7. BUS SERVICE - This is definitely the only area of the lodge that was a negative for us. (I realize a factor of luck/timing plays in here - but it was not on our side this trip!) Approximately 75% of the time we waited 20 minutes or longer for a bus. A few times we waited in excess of 30 minutes and we would occasionally step on a full bus where there didn't even appear to be standing room. Most days I would have rated our bus service "bad" a few days I would have rated it wretched! In all our trips, this was by far our worst experience with the bus transportation, and we typically travel Easter week! We ended up utilizing cabs 4 times - but that was about $100 total. The worst busing situation was Downtown Disney, by far!

8. MOUSEKEEPING - Excellent! Our sweet MOUSEKEEPING Gloria was just wonderful. And each day she left a little surprise for stuffed animal loving 10 year old. These people work hard - tip them well!

Overall - we leave this lodge and our beloved WDW completely satisfied and eager to return. We are so happy to have experienced the lodge and will return again some day to bring my parents, who will totally love the atmosphere. I am so thankful to all the lodgers on this thread who helped me feel prepared and increase my excitement for this trip! You are all wonderful! THANK YOU!

Thank you for your review. We will be arriving in a few weeks for our first stay at the WL. The anticipation and excitement are killing me:) I cannot wait for our trip! I love reading all of the tips and reviews on this board!

I'm 11 days before I arrive! Should I wait to ship my water or do it now? Does anyone know the site that shows a list for pre-packing items so I don't forget anything? I've seen it before on here!

We have a reservation for Wilderness Lodge coming up. I don't know if I should call ahead and make a room request. We just have a standard room. We didn't get a very good room location at the boardwalk. I know it is a standard room, but just don't want the parking lot or area with the trucks we had something similar at the boardwalk.

I understand it isn't guaranteed. I need to research to figure out what rooms to request.

Am I better off just waiting to see what we get?

If you want to be far from the truck area then request to be on the south side of the resort. The trucks are on the north side. The other request would be for a high floor, which would get you the furthest from any noise. :)
