Close to a Full Moon

We are close to a full moon and the skies are not very clear here, but I couldn't resist trying a photo with my new DSLR. I have never been able to get anything but a glowing globe and overexposed with my old camera. Not very good by any means, but way better than any camera I have had in the past!!!

I am incredibly jealous!!! I just came back in from taking photos of the moon, and all I got was the glowing globe.

I was exactly in the same shoes as you with previous camera. I was fortunate to get a DSLR. What settings are available to you? You may still get what you are looking for. This was my first experiment. Thanks for your comment

Please don't think I had a lens that captured it that close. I cropped the photo, which is why I asked what settings you have available. You can capture a shot then crop it to see what you may get. I was satisfied with my first attempts, but would love to have the sky crystal clear rather than some overcast clouds. Here is the photo I cropped from for comparison.

I have a Sony Mavica CD-500 with only a 3x optical zoom. I just really wanted the look around the beautiful moon. I have some control over aperture and other settings.

That is a terrific picture! You've inspired me to go out and take some...not a cloud in the sky.... but all I'm getting is the glowing ball! I am totally new at this and have an XT -- any tips on what settings would work best?

i just did some research and it said 1/125 or 1/60 at 5.6 and use exposure bracketing for 2 stops both ways...don't know how it worked yet since downloading...manual , infinity focus and as long a mm as possible and use a remote. ( my first try was 1/125, 6.3 since my lens won't go to 5.6 at 300mm but it was soft so i am trying the remote which i forgot to use)

If you have the capability, try f16, 1/60 second and ISO 100. then make some adjustments from there.

Thank you both .. I am going to try to figure those settings out ... this is my first time venturing out of the auto modes.... hopefully the moon will wait for me!

my rendition is pretty carpy..oh well to quote scarlet ohara... tomorrow is another day . the f8 would help with the softness maybe at least a little...

I'll pull out some of my old college elective Astronomy class information here. Most people do not realize it, but the quarter moons are the time that you can get the most detail.

I checked my EXIF on a few of my shots and I also used a pretty quick shutter on all of my keepers.

I used my Tamron 70-300 for my moon shot. Can't wait to get my new 70-200 f2.8 in a month of so and do some more, as it should be a lot sharper.

It's the best moon shot that I've ever seen. The most stunning moon shot I've seen was Lindsay Lohan's at the Nick Kids awards.

Wow this is one heck of a shot. If its a stiched photo then they must have a telescope fitted with an attachment for an slr either that or a 1250mm on a dSLR and getting with the crop factor 1875mm.

I love taking photos of the moon. I took some a few days ago with my new 70-300mm VR lens and was able to get a nice shot hand held. I haven't downloaded it yet, but here are some of my other shots using my old 70-300mm at the 300mm end on a tripod.

sort of ot but can some one explain why this is to me....the histogram for all the moon shots i took is way to the left with no spike at all to the right, barely anything above a totally flat line from about 1/4 way left( farther to the left is spiked all the way to the top) to the right side...even corrected in the raw converter, barely moved to the right at all which given the moon was so bright wondering why? this surprised me since i assumed it would be a spike somewhat on the far right especially this morning ( like almost 8 am)when the sky was lighter. my lcd kept showing over exposed places on the moon and the hightlights in a few areas were red in the exposure slider in the raw converter but no sign of it on the histogram...
and i got a weird red and blue mottled background to some shots instead of black sky. not like the red/blue for highlights /shadows when you convert but just not a solid black or dark blue sky, more allover textured like a cotton cloth would be.

( btw it was outside my bedroom window still this morning and the 500 f8 worked fairly well but still way to soft...guess i need to spend that lens money after all....)
