clipped my guinnea pig's nail too short :(

I feel awful! I clipped one of his nails far too short, enough that I got the quick and there was a teeny amount of blood. I feel awful! any experts out there? is he going to be okay? is there anything I should do for him???

First it was only a teeny amount, don't feel sad or guilty...its not like you did it on purpose right ? I have cut nails to the quick a few times and yes its scary & you feel bad but don't let it make you too afraid to keep them maintained...he'll be fine. I usually keep (I forget what its called) the powder yu can get at any pet aisle in a WalMart ot Pet store for just this happening. Last time it happened I didn't have any, just put a drop of Hydrigen Peroxide on it and it stopped right away...every 2 weeks I have 160 yes 160 nails to clip.....sometimes they get cut too short ....relax

thanks! that helps. it didn't continue to bleed thankfully but I was so freaked out! his front nails were getting so long but he really struggled letting us clip them and finally I said enough was enough and had at it (had the brilliant thought to wear leather gloves while doing it so if he nipped it wouldn't hurt me). ugh. well, at least the gloves were a success. hopefully I'll do better next time!

I once cut my ferrets nail too close too. I cringed and jumped and cried louder than she did. It will be OK.

Another thing, with the little animals, I remember when my DDs were small & we kept rabbits, the little ones get stressed really easily next time along with the gloves cover his face with a towel we do this with our cat...cut them fast, its when we get scared that things go wrong so to amend my pp that would be 168 nails every few weeks ! Thank God the horse has a farrier (I still get involved with that too) no wonder I feel so tired really need those winning numbers I could hire help !

Been there, done that with my dog a couple of times and she still loves me. During one of those times, we called the 24hour animal hospital and they actually recommended flour to stop the bleeding.

I would also recommend Qwik Stop Styptic Powder. I always have some on hand when I cut bunny nails. It's good to have the powder, a Q-tip and tissues on hand and be near a faucet. If you cut a nail too short and it bleeds, quickly slip a tissue under the foot (to keep it off your clothes or whatever the animal is sitting on). Pour some of the powder on a tissue and pick up a little with a wet Q-tip (if you put the wet Q-tip directly into the container of powder, it will clump up). Press the Q-tip against the bleeding nail. You don't have to rub it in. Just hold it on there until the bleeding stops. Then take a wet tissue to clean off the extra powder and any blood on the foot. The animal will probably be annoyed with you but will be just fine!

I did that to one of the cats once and felt awful! Cheeto jumped and squealed and gave me a look of death!!! There was a little blood but when I called the vet, she said it really wouldn't be a big deal and the cat would be fine! I kissed it better, he slunk off and sulked and all was fine the next day!

the difference between Quik Stop and flour is, flour does not burn. My guinea pig's nails are really long and even though I work in a grooming salon, i could not cut them w/o quicking them. Their quick grows out longer than dogs/cats/

I hate cutting our piggys nails - one has black nails and there is no way to see the quick. My DD holds them against her chest and I clip - it is very stressful. I know how you feel, but they will be fine.
Give them a treat, mine like apple tree limbs fresh off the tree, they really love this time of year, there are blossoms involved!
