Clip your toe nails EARLY

One of the more important things to do 2-3 weeks pre-race is to trim the nails. One does not want to trim too close to the race as any small slip of the clipper or sharp edge left can create a spot on a toe that can leave you wincing with every step. Clipping at least a week pre-race will give any injury time to heal.

I would normally post this a couple weeks from now but am contemplating scrapping a run this morning due to a small cut from the clippers on Friday. Dang it hurts to put a shoe on.

Sorry you hurt your toe :sad1: Hope it heals quickly.

Thanks again for the useful advice. I never would have thought about doing my nails a week or two early, but it makes total sense. Thanks for informing us newbies so we don't injure ourselves too badly. :thumbsup2

Actually canned the run at 12. i was having all around issues. Would like to blame on the toe but I was not a good runner yesterday and failed to hydrate well .

Coach: Sorry you had so much trouble. At least you know why.

verticalchaos: Trust me, I NEED the pedi before I go. If I am wearing flipflops before the races, and I certainly do hope to be since I'm arriving that Wednesday, then I will have to do something.

You can get a pedicure and just ask them not to cut your nails- just file and polish.

And file the nails only! You've built up calluses and other places on your feet in training that work FOR you in running. If they file/peel them all off, you'll be running essentially from scratch.

I'd rather keep my feet as they are and whatever. You're a runner. Be proud of your runner's feet!

totally agree with making sure they don't scrape the calluses! Will make for a difficult race otherwise. I always do my own toes before and get them done after when I go in for my massage. I need a girl day after all that training and racing!

Tandy - I'd usually do a pedi afterward but I know what you mean. See if your esthetician can give you a sports or runner's pedicure. Some of them will know to be extra careful if you ask for that.

Thanks for all the advice ladies. I'll be careful, and, I think I'll get it a week early, just to be sure. The Mickey heads usually last a good month anyway. :thumbsup2

This might be a little off topic but in-grown toe-nails... I've seen comments for and against using clippers vs nail scissors for them. I find mine are on my big toes and hurt alot when walking or running after trimming them. Does anyone else have them and have tips for running/walking? It would probably be more than a week I'd have to give them to adjust and grow out a bit before running a long distance.

P.S. Where I go, if I ask for a "polish change" it is only $10 whereas a pedicure is $18. All they do is soak, file and paint :).

The ebst advice I was given was to leavev the sides of your nails square. This is to prevent ingrown nails. Will help avoid cutting them too short too. I use ither nanil scissors (Curved opposite of finger nail trimmers, a smile instead of a frown) or toenail clippers (flat, not curved like finger nail clippers).

YES! Take it from me during Wine & Dine... got a pedicure at a new place a few days prior to the race. Didn't even think twice when she started scrubbing those calluses off my feet. OMG did I get some fabulous blisters walking around the parks and during the race. NEVER again am I letting them scrub my feet like that prior to a huge race.
