We are wanting to spend a few nights in Clearwater before our days at Disney start. We have never been there and unsure where to stay. Would it be better to stay in Orlando and drive each day? Anyone with advice?

We've done Clearwater Beach (slightly different town) and have done the Sheraton there. It is usually a quieter more relaxing time. The bigger hotels (Sheraton, Marriott, etc) were all fine. Some of the smaller cheaper ones were sketchy. We really liked the segway tour and could easily find good places to eat. I'd stay there rather than drive. Rush hour in Tampa can be ugly and there are really only a few causeways to the beach.

We are staying at Frenchy's Oasis Motel on an upcoming trip. It's not beachfront, but it's just a short walk. I haven't been to clearwater since I was a kid, but this hotel fit our budget and has great reviews on Trip Advisor. It is small.....only 16 rooms and they charge $20 extra for housekeeping, so make sure you factor that into the price.

I would not suggest driving each day. We've really enjoyed the Holiday Inn in Clearwater Beach. It's on the water but not directly on the beach; it's just a very short one block walk up. It was very affordable, had large suites for our family and kids eat free at their restaurant. We've also stayed at the Hilton, which has a lovely location and amenities but the room was a bit small for our family of four (they only had double, not queen, beds). I've heard amazing things about Frenchy's Oasis Motel, but haven't stayed there. We also almost booked the Pier House 60 hotel.

You can get some cheaper hotel deals if you are not beachfront or staying in the city of Clearwater itself, but it was worth it to us to be on the beach.

Just a quick review of Frenchy's Oasis. It was sufficient, but if we ever return to Clearwater I'm not sure I'd return. We paid the extra $20 for 1 night of cleaning. It didnt get cleaned and when i went to the front office to tell them, they removed the fee. There was also a large hairball on the floor by the door when we arrived.

Rooms were large (with hard floors). While there was a nice view of the water from our room, the smell from their seafood processing company next door was so strong it limited our time spent on the balcony.

The pool was small but sufficient.

Location wise it was convenient to the aquarium which was our primary reason for heading to Clearwater.

Office hours are limited. We arrived after 7 and they made sure we had access to our keys.

Ok thanks. We are only two nights there. Location ( walking distance to pier) a must. Is it ok to use as base to beach and pier ?? Google maps seems ok but reality often different. We aren't expecting a resort like feel. Too much money as we are investing that money at the BC !! Cleaning we dont need. For 2 days we can make our own beds! Just concerned about that fish smell tripadvisor doesnt mention that!!

We always stay at the Marriott on Sand Key. Beautiful resort and a 5 min drive to Clearwater beach. We just returned from our vacation at Universal - stayed at the Royal Pacific Resort and we drove twice to Clearwater. It took nearly 2 hrs to get there. I don't think we will do that again. We will stay and spend a few days in Clearwater then head off to Universal or Disney. Too much time spent driving!

Enjoy,

Yes, reasonable walking distance to pier.
