Clearskies photographic Journey to the World and Beyond - 8 theme parks & much more

Hello there clearskies I just started reading your TR and thought to myself why am I reading this if it's not all disney related stuff but as I got more into it,like you said I need to broaden my horizens and I also thought this gives me a chance to see what other parks are like except for universal so why I said to myself why not just keep on reading, so thanks for making those horizens bigger

The chicken contingent! :lmao: I'm going to have to remember that for my July trip, because we've got some chickens along for the ride.

You and I look very much the same at the end of the work day on Friday.

:rotfl:
It's...Stripperman!
By Golly I believe that was his official name :lmao:
Stripperman....wreaking havoc with his bulging....er....Biceps
:rotfl2:

Great shots around "Marvelland". Isn't it crazy that Disney actually owns Marvel? I've heard they even sell some Marvel merchandise in WDW.

Just wanted to agree with you on what a phenomenal attraction Spiderman is! I read recently that it had it's 10 year anniversary. I think it's quite an accomplishment for Universal that after 10 years it is still many people's favorite and no other park (as far as I know) has duplicated it. I get a little motion sick on it , but I am willing to fight through it in order to experience the amazing attraction. My husband also loves the Hulk coaster, Dr. Doom (not sure of the name - the big drop ride) and Dueling Dragons (which I think is now in WWOPH). I've spent some quality time people watching while he experiences those rides. :)
Thank you! Oh yes, it certainly is strange that Disney acquired Marvel. It will be interesting to see how this evolves. I did not realize Disney started selling some Marvel merchandise in their stores. I'll have to look for that on my next trip.

Has is been 10 year for the spiderman ride? Wow. What have I been doing these past 10 years? The only ride that I have experienced that is similar is a ride in Busch Gardens Virginia called the curse of DarKastle. DarKastle is not a bad ride but not nearly as good as Spiderman IMHO. I am with you on some of those other rides. I find a good way to spend time while waiting for others on rides is to take out the camera for a stroll. It enjoys coming out of the bag to take a look around.

 Hopefully one day it will become a familiar concept!

Thanks for clarifying :)
Thank you Tanz! I hope your job search leads you to one where you don't come out of the week looking like me. Well, for that matter, I hope that is not the case for the beginning of the week either :)

thank you for reading disneygeeks!!! I just realized you are my 200th post so you get and extra special

****Edited**** This is what I get for writing at 1:30 AM
You still get an extra special Welcome as my 201 post!!!! Yay!!!!
ok Tanz, I'll just owe you****

Thank you for broadening those horizons!

Be easy on my fellow chickens. Cluck, we have enough thrills in our life, cluck, and we just have more important things to do with our valuable time, cluck, than being hurled around screaming like a banshee, cluck. Yeah, that's it....more important things....sure...cluck.

My sympathies go out to you for sporting my look at the end of the week. :lmao: I am still trying to figure out how they got a picture of me to put in the park.

I'm loving the photos, but I think I may be enjoying the commentary even more! :rotfl:

Why thank you for welcoming me to your TR and I'm so happy I was your 201 post and put you into the next round of posts...take care and looking forward to the rest of your TR

Sorry for being AWOL for a bit...it was a horrific week. I now have had a chance to breathe today and I am ready to wrap up day 7....

If you were to ask me in the past what our "Must Do" Character Dinner is, I would not hesitate. This was a no brainer. Where do you get to see the big cheese himself and his megastar friends? Why at Chef Mickeys of course. If you want star power you can't really top Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Goofy and Pluto can you? Well, I suppose I could see princess aficionados who opt for the castle but other than that come on...Chef Mickeys is the place to be to see the elite characters. Not only did you get a great character experience but the food was good. OK, not great food mind you, but it was still decent.

Now, I have read several people bemoan the decline in food at Disney over the years and as I have read these critiques I have thought "come on you are over exaggerating a bit, it is not that bad". Well my friends, I am saddened to say this but I must admit that I think Chef Mickeys has been in that downward spiral with the food quality over the past few years. The premium you pay for this place is now almost soley to see the Fab 5 and that is about it for us. On our last visit it was one of my least favorite dinners of the trip. On that same trip though we met up with much better food at a different character dinner and a fantastic character experience. It is here that we are dining tonight and this has now become our new favorite character dinner. This honor is now bestowed upon 1900 Park Fare. Sure it does not have the same star power with the characters but the character interaction is a heck of a lot more fun. The highlight of the character encounter is with the step sisters. Drizella and Anastasia have been a blast now both times we have eaten here. They add a lot more life to party than the standard characters who you come across. In addition Lady Tremaine is fun in a more subdued way with her stern attitude (but not mean). Oh you still get some royalty too with Prince Charming and Cindy but they are more like your standard character greetings with a few nice words perhaps an autograph and picture and then off to the next table.

I have some pictures of the characters but most of these are not the best quality. Most of these are tight crops of a much larger group picture and thus blown up significantly. Anyway, here were our dining companions for the evening.

Great expressions from Drizella...

I must say this guy was Charming

Forget about Prince William and Catherine Middleton....here is the Royal couple I prefer to see

I think the flailing going on was supposed to be dancing...Whatever you call it, it was entertaining.

I had missed Anastasia earlier when I was at the buffet with the chef. She was nice to come back later for a few poses with the family.
original.jpg

There was someone else though this evening that was the star of the meal for me. I have mentioned previously that I have dietary restrictions so I need to see a Chef before I can attack the buffet. The usual way this works is the chef leads me though the buffet, tells me what I can eat and that is about it. Well, this evening I was fortunate to run across an extraordinary chef who called himself Chef TJ though his name tag was a jumble of letters. As we went through the buffet he did the usual pointing to foods that I could and could not eat but instead of moving past those that I could not he went further and kept asking if I like that food and if so he will make me some. I said a few times that it was no bother and that there was plenty enough at the buffet that I could eat but he truly seemed to want to please. So after the walk though I grabbed some of the food that I could eat and settled down. First of all I will say that I think the food here was good compared to other character buffets. I have lamented the change a couple of years ago from Prime Rib at these buffets to what seems to be a strip roast of beef at the Disney buffets. The carved beef at 1900 this evening though was excellent and it tasted like prime rib. So, after I chowed down a little, chef TJ comes back to our table with an amazing dish of food for me. It looked delicious though I was not sure how in the world I was going to eat it all. It had salmon, chicken breast, potatoes, corn, some type of noodle thread and some other vegetables and it all tasted as good as it looked. Unfortunately, I thought too late after I started to dig in that I should have taken a picture of this culinary creation so I apologize but all I have is picture with a dent already put into the dish.

original.jpg

I somehow managed to finish most of this and I was stuffed. That was not the end though. chef TJ came back later and asked if I was ready for dessert. I hardly ever eat dessert since I don't eat dairy and I try to keep sugar intake to a minimum. I just couldn't say no to him though. So a little bit later, Chef TJ came back with this

original.jpg

I stared at this for a while and thought to myself I just can't eat this but then thought shoot he went though all this trouble I have to try. I couldn't let chef TJ down, So I bravely forged ahead and ate a about half of what he prepared. By then I was ready to be rolled out of the restaurant but I was a happy glutton. By far this was the best chef experience that I have had yet at Disney. Thank you Chef TJ!!

Note that when I got back I made sure to write to guest services and praise chef TJ

So after a great dinner experience I was ready for some other fireworks and that was wishes. My family again was ready to head back to the resort though. This time I had some time to spare so I drove them back to the resort and then drove back into the MK area. Instead of going back to the Grand Floridian though (been there last trip and I wanted a different vantage point), I decided to see if I could have better success with the TTC. If you recall I attempted this earlier on in this trip and it was a wash out.

This time the weather was cooperating better though I did have some of the castle getting slightly obscured by smoke as the show went on. When I got to the TTC area there was no one at the front of the fence. Score...there is limited space there and I did not need to worry about being chased away from one of the gates from the ferry dock. Here are the pictures I came away with this time.

At this point I decided to zoom out a bit to catch the reflections in the water as well.

This has now become my favorite out of park location to photograph wishes. Now, you may be thinking, didn't he say that about the Poly beach already. Well, no, not really. I said the Poly beach is my favorite resort to watch and photograph wishes. If you want to relax at a resort and enjoy the show then the Poly beach is the place to go. If you want the best perspective IMHO the TTC is the best. Be forewarned though there is limited space. No matter where you are though in the complex though if you can see Wishes it is a great night.

OK, that's a wrap for day 7...I'll start up day 8 next....ta ta for now...

Yay on getting a chance to breath! I'm not sure I would have survived without breathing for a week! :lmao:

I am so glad you said that about Chef Mickey's. I read the reviews on here before deciding we were not eating there on our trip.

Love the photos of the characters at 1900 Park Fare - the one of Drizella dancing is hilarious!

I'm looking forward to being fed by Chef TJ - he sounds awesome! I love the food though having a sweet tooth, WOW at that desert. It looks very yummy! popcorn::

Am glad you had better weather at TTC this time around and all the shots of the castle look great! :thumbsup2

AWESOME Wishes photos!! Where at the TTC were you? Does that area usually get crowded? What lens were you using?
I absolutely love 1900 Park Fare, too. The food there is phenomenal. I haven't been there in years, though. I just might have to schedule that in November! Your dessert there looked awesome!!! Did they have non-dairy ice cream?

:lmao: It was touch and go. I was hanging on by a thread.

It's a shame that the food is disappointing at Chef Mickeys but perhaps they think that there are no issues since they still pack the place with quests anyway :confused3 We did eat there later in our trip but we tried breakfast this time. More to come later in the TR. I figured it is tougher to go wrong with breakfast food.

I hope your experience at 1900 is as good for you in Sept Tanz. I also hope that Chef TJ is still there when I go in the first week of Sept. I'll report back to you if he was there. I reserved a Dinner for our last night on 9/4. You are going for breakfast though right? I have no idea how they work the Chefs schedule but that would be a long day if the Chef was there for breakfast as well as dinner. It could be that they rotate Chefs with meals though and it is the luck of the draw when you get a certain Chef. I don't have any knowledge of how this works.

Am glad you had better weather at TTC this time around and all the shots of the castle look great! :thumbsup2
Thank you tanz. I was there still was some smoke hanging around the castle a bit but I am please with the results.

Thank you April! The area of the TTC that I took pictures from is at the dock where they load and unload the ferry boat. You can't enter the gates of that area though since the CMs will keep that space clear so this is up against the fence just outside the gates. The spot I used is to the far right of the gates. There is a small space there that will not be in the way of traffic from the people leaving the ferry. The first night I went there (Wash out night) there was someone already there and I set up next to him with a tripod but I was blocking some of the farthest gate to the right. The other photographer warned me that I might get asked to move by a CM. There are plenty of other gates for people to leave from though and I took my chances and no one raised an issue to me. This time I was the first one to that spot. There were other people behind me sitting on a wall watching the show but they were not photographing the show. This was my first trip attempting this area so I am not sure what it is usually like. I am guessing there it won't get too crowded but it is hit or miss if there will be other people with tripods. As far as lenses are concerned, I used a 70-200 mm lens. The shots I like the most are those that also show the reflections in the water and those were shot at approx 160mm. Note that since I have a full frame camera and your camera has a crop factor, 160mm for me equates to 100mm for you (I think).

Most of the Disney restaurants seem to have a non-dairy ice cream. They were using Tofutti when I was there. I am somewhat hoping they have switched to other alternatives though. There are coconut milk ice creams that I prefer that are also agave sweetened instead of using sugar. It would be great if they used one of those brands. I have tried "So Delicious" brand as well as "Luna and Larry's Coconut bliss" and both are better IMHO.

I'm glad to hear it! :rotfl:

Do they not realise that it is only packed because of the characters and it having nothing to do with the food. I am hoping that was the case - look forward to reading all about it.

Thank you! I forgot you are going in Sep as well - only 4 months to go! I hope Chef TJ is there for both our trips though you are probably right in that they do change chefs - one could not work continuously! It is likely that it will be the luck of the draw - def let us know if he was there for your dinner reservation. Yes, we are going for breakfast on a Wednesday. I am going to see if I can find out who will be the chef nearer the time.

Tofutti is ok, but I think I prefer the "So Delicious", too. I've never tried coconut milk ice cream, though. Does it taste coco-nutty? I've never heard of the Luna & Larry's brand- I'm going to have to keep an eye out for that!

I am started to get more excited planning our trip. They just offered free dining for most of our stay so I rebooked my trip this past weekend
It adds up to a big savings where you are a family of 4 with 2 kids that are also considered adults (even though my 10 year old eats like a bird and will not eat like an adult). I had to keep one day at the start with my prior pin code since the free dining starts on the 8/28 but I am excited that we got the savings for most of the trip. I'll report back to you as soon as we get back on Chef TJ.

The coconut milk ice cream does not have a "coconut taste" at all to me. Perhaps my palate is not as refined as others. I enjoy it much more than soy based.

just found this report... your pictures are amazing! :worship:
Thank you very much sahm2two :goodvibes
Glad to have you join :welcome:

I like how you give yourself several "favorite" locations :) I'm not a photographer, so I'll stick with the Poly Beach as my favorite location for Wishes, but I agree it's tough to beat the pics from the TTC. Thanks for sharing them with us!

Uh oh...you are on to me :) OK yes, I sure have a lot of favorites don't I?

So, let me put out Clearskies definitive list of favorite places he's watched Wishes in order of preference so I can lay it all out on the table at once:

1. Favorite place of all - Come on...has to be on Main Street USA.
2. Favorite out of park experience - Wishes Cruise (but not for photography)
3. Favorite out of park place to photograph - TTC
4. Favorite resort experience - Poly beach

ok since I feel the other resorts are feeling left out let's add...
5. Favorite out of park resort to dine and watch wishes - Narcoossee's
6. Favorite resort viewing of wishes from above - Contemporary observation deck ( I am really pushing it now)

let's see...I can add a couple more places I have seen wishes so I can make this a real stretch....
7. Favorite surprise place to see wishes - On the boardwalk looking over BC/YC
8. Favorite non-Disney place to see wishes - At my home watching youtube. :)

There I think that about covers it for me but I can't promise I won't find new favorites on my next trip :rotfl:

Thank you Tanz I was hoping that Disney would come through and they did. They are making you buy a photopass photobook now for $100 though as part of the package which is a bit of a rip off since I can have one made myself a lot cheaper. It is a little disappointing that each year they make the deal a little less beneficial but it is still a great overall deal.

I believe that most smart planners build in at least one day of Downtime on a trip longer than a week so that the travellers can relax and recharge their batteries. To the likely dismay of my travelling partners, I am not one of those smart planners. I have limited trips to the Disney area and by golly I want to make the most of it. OK, all hope is not lost on me. I did at least plan this particular day as a day that we could "sleep in" a bit before heading out for more action.

For me "sleeping in" on a disney vacation is about 7AM but I did make sure when I got up that I was quiet and I left the rest of the family sleeping while I went out to stroll the grounds some more. I first went to get my trusy partner from the car and then we went off for some more quality time together.

I first came across Goofy out early already practicing his hockey again
original.jpg

I hear it is difficult getting "ice time" so you have to get up early to practice.
large.jpg

Since Goofy was dedicated to honing his skills this morning, I decided not to bother him today and I moved on.

I decided to head over the to AS Music food court to grab some coffee next. I stopped along the way at the Calypso pool for a few pics.

original.jpg

Whoa...you might want to holster those weapons Panchito. I'm pretty sure firearms are not allowed at the resort.
original.jpg

original.jpg

I warned Donald about hanging out with a rougher element and I went on my way to to the food court.

When I made my way back to the room the family was awake. We spent some time together in the room and then the kids decided to make their way to splash around in the pool for a bit. You can guess what I did right....yes, time for more pictures. This time I decided I was going to only shoot with one lens at one focal length and I put on my 300mm lens. So, my only method of zooming in and out was my feet. I figured I could try tp get a few slightly different perspectives using a longer lens.

I never really noticed the antenna coming out of Perdita's head. I hope that didn't hurt.

The security measures at the Toy Story Buildings are amazing!!!

Little did Bo Peep know she was soon to be mauled by a ferocious dinosaur....

What gives??? Security measures at the Fantasia building are not bad either.
Where's the protection at my Ducks building?

Whoa, is he trying to grab her ___? ....Security!!!

I am so flabbergasted by this behavior of the jack in the box that I am at a loss for words on the next couple of pictures

That's all for my little tour of the grounds with my 300mm lens. I put the camera away for a bit and went to spend some time with the rest of the family.

Coming up next up our pseudo down time continues with a trip to some of the best counter service food on property.

Thanks for the All Stars photo tour. DH and I stayed there in December, so it was fun to see all the pics! It was very cold when we were there, but we decided to check the water temp in the pools since we'd seen a few brave souls swimming earlier in the day. We were staying in the Dalmations section, so walked over to the Mighty Ducks pool. The lifeguard came over right away and told us the heat wasn't working in the pool. He said he was only there to rescue anyone who dared to jump in, because they would have a heart attack from the shock of the ice cold water. :rotfl2:

I know the Value Resorts are despised by some Disney fans, but I enjoy the huge icons. I especially love the Andy's Room area, specifically the army guys on the roof. (I'm also a big fan of the "real" army guys at DHS) You did a great job of capturing the expressions on the characters.

The car from Toy Story is just called "RC".

Since you are leaving us hanging, my guess for your next stop is DTD - maybe a meal at Earl of Sandwich??
