cleaning the tub

I didn't worry about this until last year. Both my daughter and myself were at the doctor multiple times after our Disney vacation. They blamed all the swimming we did ( no more than any other year).

So this year I looked up directions on one of the whirlpool web sites and took both dishwasher soap and bleach to clean the tub (I found the web site off of a thread either on the DVC board or the tips board). Started running the tub the moment I entered the room. Having the tub is one of the perks of my vacation, I didn't want to have to give it up.

No problems this year!!!

Kaboom is sort of like scrubbing bubbles -it's a no scrub cleaner that's supposed to get rid of soap scum, etc. It does say on the bottle not to mix it with bleach because the mixture may give off dangerous fumes. My dishwashing detergent (Palmolive gel) does contain bleach, so when I use it to clean the whirlpool, I don't use anything with it. The "bleach and ammonia" warning is usually in the small print on the back of the label.
I'd hate to hear about any whirlpool cleaning accidents. ;)

Do you think that the dishwashing detergent that they have in the villa will do (along with the kaboom) or should I just stick with the dishwashing detergent alone? I will X the clorox from my list if the detergent has it already.

I would suggest one or the other Kaboom or something with bleach. Most dish washer detergents contain chlorine bleach so be careful. If you want to do both empty , rinse and do over rather than take the chance of mixing chems. Kaboom is not always with the regular bathroom cleaners, sometimes it is stocked with the oxy-clean, and orange clean products since they are from the same manufacturer.

Got a question for the spa cleaners. What do you do for the hotel hot tub? Do you do anything before you get into that water or is the chlorine enough? Same thing for the hotel pool.

I guess I don't understand the need to re-clean the jacuzzi tub since I will probably be using some sort of cleaner on myself, soap, bath gel, etc.

Just trying to understand the logic here.

I work in a labor and delivery unit that has jacuzzi tubs. We clean our tubs with 1 cup clorox and two Tablespoons dishwasher detergent and let run for 20 mins. I hope this helps.

Good to know...thanks.

It's funny but at home I use bleach to clean my whirlpool tub and at DVC I just use the dishwasher detergent. At least at home I guess I'll try both. Still think I'll just do the detergent at DVC.

Deb & Bill...what about the hot tubs? Personally I stay out of them. As a pediatrician told me....think about all the germs multiplying on all the surrounding surfaces....not in the water itself. I guess germs love warm water!

I use the jacuzzi tub to get clean. I use the Hot Tub for relaxation and socialization. There is usually enough clorine in the tub to cure any worries I have about them. If you stay out of the hot tubs, then why not the pool as well. And then there is the ocean, there's fish is the ocean and you know what W.C. Fields says about that.

I bet the hot tubs at the pools have the pipes cleaned and flushed out a lot more often than the jacuzzi tubs in the DVC villas do.

Well and I know the hot tubs have chlorinated water too. It's the nearby surfaces that our doctor was talking about as well as the warm water and many people touching those surfaces! However we were also talking about my son with Downs who is so susceptible to catching any bug in the vicinity!

What did W.C.Fields say about the ocean?:D

What's in the ocean?! Everything!! New York City dumps their garbage into the ocean, so the waves take it everywhere!! I have a book that I use for Earth Day every year with my students that tells about NYC and their garbage problem--they are an object lesson on what NOT to do if you are acting responsibly for the environment. They loaded their garbage on a huge barge, and tried to pawn it off on other nations and other states. When no one would accept their garbage NYC dumped it in the ocean. That will make you think twice about swimming in it!

I'm married to a Plumber, and they Flag beaches for bacteria. Nobody flags jacuzzi's. The Plumbers call them Bacteria Pools.

Ewwww! Thanks for sharing everybody. I guess I will be cleaning my tub when I get to Disney.

My sister got some type of rash at Typhoon Lagoon. Now we bring an antibacterial cleanser with us to wash with after we leave the waterparks.

W.C. Fields, when asked if he wanted water, said

"Never touch the stuff. Fish f*** in it, you know."

John, thanks for your response. I really have been waiting for an answer.

I suppose I should have known better than to ask!:o
