DD has a beautiful Tiffany necklace that has tarnished

Anyone know of a safe way to clean it?

Thanks!

I would suggest taking to Tiffanys to have them clean it. Some jewlery they actually will clean for free; it's worth asking.

I clean my sterling by making a paste with fireplace ashes and water, but I don't know if I would do that with a piece of Tiffany sterling. It might scratch it.

This might not be safe for Tiffany sterling, but wrapping the silver securely in a piece or two of aluminum foil and then submerging it boiling water for a length of time (the longer it's in the water, the more tarnish comes off) will take off the tarnish. You should be able to see that the "tarnish" has transferred from the silver and onto the aluminum foil.

Crest (or Colgate) Toothpaste. All you have to do is put it on, it will take the tarnish off without rubbing.

Tiffanys has a silver polishing cloth which most likely has something in it that removes tarnish. I use it on all my silver jewelry I have gotten from them and it works great. I keep it in my jewelry amoire and give my items a few swipes here and there when ever I see it.

Bring it back to Tiffany's so the cleaning is guaranteed....be prepared to pay $$$$

I use a sterling silver cleaning cloth that I bought at Walmart. One side is for cleaning and the other for polishing. It works GREAT!!!!! I was amazed the first time I saw all the black tarnish come off. The jewelry looks like new when I am done.

I useually just spit on something and wipe with my shirt

Clean your sterling silver jewelry just like you would your sterling silverware - with a good quality silver cleaner. I like Twinkle the best, and also the Wright's products, Silver Polish and Silver Cream. I much prefer the silver cream, as it comes in a little pot with a sponge and is not as runny as the polish. Just make a mixture of a little silver cleaner and water, and polish away. Then wash the piece of jewelry in a hot water rinse, then in a warm water mix with some gentle soap cleaner. Rinse again with hot hot water, and dry immediately. Of course, if your silver piece has any motors or batteries like a watch in it, you'll have to be very careful to only get the silver part wet.

All of those other quick and easy methods like plastic and the one where you dip silver in some solution are extremely dangerous to your silver, in my opinion. At least for silver flatware, anything that takes off the subtle discolorations known as "patina" are denigrating the quality of the piece. You want it clean and shiny but not glaring, if you know what I mean.

The cleaning cloths someone recommended are impregnated with cleaner and also work pretty well. I just don't trust anything on my silver except good old products I have used for years, and a little elbow grease!

There is no household job that is messier, but more rewarding, than polishing silver. It is just amazing how much difference you can make in 5 minutes with a clean cloth and a good rubbing!!!
