Cleaning Pennies for Pressed Penny Machines?

I remember reading a thread about pressed pennies and it mentioned that to clean pennies to use a solution of salt and vinegar. Does anyone know how many parts salt and how many parts vinegar. We are leaving in less than two weeks and want to have our pennies ready. My dd's have been going through our bin of pennies to pick out the US ones but most are quite dirty so we want to shine them up before we leave.

Somewhere I have a website that had that information (my pennies are pretty dirty too - but we have a month and a half before we leave so I haven't cleaned them yet).

In my head I have a 1 part vinegar & salt to 10 parts water ratio, but that could be the bleach to water ratio for cleaning sprouts (since I just did that 2 days ago, I read the penny cleaning about a week ago and I could be confusing the two).

I'll check for the site and post what I find. I have it saved somewhere.

Just get some Kaboom cleaner.All you have to do is dip the pennies in full strength cleaner ( do not add water) and they are new and shiny almost instantly.

I just put them in tomato sauce or tomato juice overnight. Works really well. Use the pre 1982 pennies!

Why pre 1982 pennies? Was there a change in metal composition? Just curious...TIA

After 1982, the pennies were changed so that the inside is zinc. Newer pennies can get silver (zinc really) streaks through them when pressed as the outer layer stretches and exposes the inside.

Or so I've read. This hasn't happened to me, but I've only done a few pressed pennies in my life. I did go through my huge bowl of pennies and pulled out the pre-82 pennies to clean for our WDW trip in September. (I did the ketchup thing last night and it worked well).

hey i clean them with copper cleaner after our trip then after they dry i put them in the book and they are still shiny ..I had the cleaner anyway so i just used that but < i wouldnt clean before you go b/c the handleing of them they will get dirty anyway ...

This is so funny. I just came across this in a book of science experiments yesterday.

It says you need 2 disposable cups, 1 tsp salt, 1 Tbsp water, 2 Tbsp vinegar, and medicine dropper.

Mix salt and water in one cup, vinegar in other. With medicine dropper drop salt solution onto penny followed by vinegar. Repeat those steps and keep pennies in solution for five minutes, then wipe with damp paper towel.



Then another experiment book says


1 oz lemon juice or vinegar, small disposable cup

Soak coin in lemon juice(or vinegar) for 5 minutes then take out shiny coin.

If it's that easy, why would I do the 1st one?

Definately make sure to use pennies that are pre-1982. I have flattened many pennies and the post-1982 ones are not pure copper, they do not flatten out as well, and they look streaky where the zinc shows thru. I did the vinegar/salt cleaning method and it does work but takes some effort, I think I will try the kaboom (or similar) for my up-coming trip.
Also it works really well to have a seperate coin purse with your daily allotment of quarters and pre-selected pennies so you don't accidentally use a younger penny (and you don't drive your spouse mad searching for change).

I used an m&m tube put in 2 quarter and a penny 2 quarter and a penny ..They were all ready to go and i kept it in my fanny pac and when i came to a machine it was a piece of cake since they were all ready ..and i was saving some not all but for 6 peeps ..

My daughter is letting me use her Darth Vader M&M tube (sans head) for our Nov. trip but she'll only relinquish it the day before the trip. Do they still sell the tubes? What a great idea! I used to use them for crayons on the plane but alas, my DDs are too old for that. <sigh>
