CALGARY, Alberta – Former President George W. Bush, making his first public speech since leaving office in January, says he wants Barack Obama to succeed and that it's "essential" to support the new leader.

Bush declined to critique the Obama administration in Tuesday's speech, saying the new president has enough critics and that he "deserves my silence."

Former Vice President Dick Cheney has said that Obama's decisions threatened America's safety. Conservative talk-show host Rush Limbaugh has said he hoped Obama would fail.

"I love my country a lot more than I love politics," Bush said. "I think it is essential that he be helped in office."

I find this attitude refreshing. He's not doing to others what was done to him. Lord knows we didn't agree on much the last few years, but this is a classy thing to do.

All the living presidents, except for carter, has taken this stance.

C'mon Dawn. If he can do it, so can you! I have faith in ya! :cheer2:

He is an extremely classy man, as is his family. He did so much to ease the transition for the good of the country. He bent over backwards and forwards for Obama, and yet barely a day goes by that Obama doesn't blame the "previous administration" for 'what he inherited'. He should look no further than his own votes in the senate and the Congress.

:lmao: :dance3:

Yep, it takes class to do what he did!

This does not surprise me. His parents were very classy people and I saw it from him and his wife while they were in office.

You know, Jimmy Carter was a horrible president, but he is a wonderful EX-president. Very classy, always involved in community service, a wonderful role model.

Perhaps George W. Bush will be similar.

I was thinking he might join his Dad and Fmr. President Clinton in their humanitarian efforts. They have done fantastic work and seem to have had a great time doing it.

I didn't agree with everything either Pres. Bush did, but I always thought they were "good people." I think Barbra Bush was one of my favorite first ladies, and I was so moved recently when (the elder) Pres. Bush talked about his wife. I also agree with you about Jimmy Carter. He has done more good for this country since leaving office than he did while he was actually in office.

I wouldn't expect anything less of President Bush because he is a good man. :thumbsup2

Doesn't change the fact that it's classy and he didn't have to do it. :confused3
The way things change in this country in a nanosecond he really didn't have to take that stance.

Go President Bush :thumbsup2

A nice and refreshing attitude for sure. It proves that just because one is a horrible president, doesn't mean they are the anti-christ.

That title is reserved for those who were under him.....;)

It was a good thing for him to say. I'm no fan but maybe he can be a good ex-President.

Clinton has had his critical moments and in the first year of Bush's presidency. At times he was almost as classless at Carter.

Very classy indeed. I think that former Presidents realize that it's an impossible job.

As bad as he was as a president, he has become even a worse Ex president. Building a few houses does not vindicate him from his trashing the US and President Bush abroad. I cannot think of a single instance in which a former U.S. President has gone abroad to speak out against a Commander in Chief, while at war. Make no mistake, Carter failed miserably as a president and he has now distinguished himself as a traitor.
His activities in the last 15 years or so have further diminished his reputation. First he stuck his nose into the North Korea situation in 1994 by persuading Clinton to send him to negotiate. Kim Il Sung broke the subsequent agreement, and kept on working on nuclear weapons. In other Carter lowlights:

He visited Cuba in 2002 and cavorted with Castro.
He certified the results of the questionable election in Venezuela in 2004 that kept Hugo Chavez in power. It was widely believed that the vote was fraudulent.
He wrote an error-riddled book about the Middle East, accusing Israel of practicing apartheid.
Carter i, ridiculed Tony Blair for his alliance with the US in the war on terror, and saying about Bush, “I think as far as the adverse impact on the nation around the world, this administration has been the worst in history.”
