Remember when hurricane Floyd shut down WDW for a day....well, I flew down that day into Tampa (orlando closed).....drove to MCO - exchanged a rental car for my one-week rental and finally arrived at the Wildie about 5 pm (instead of my usual 11 am). I admit, I was tired and CRANKY.
In addition, I had been rear-ended and my car totaled 2 days before so I arrived in a neck brace and firm orders from my physician to ride nothing more wild than Small World.
As I was checking in (in the spot just next to Guest Services) I watched a father (2 children in a double-wide stroller) YELL at the castmember demanding the Magic Kingdom be opened for the evening because his twins wanted to see the castle. It was not at all appropriate.
Well....he pushed a button....I stepped over to him and sharply reminded him that at one time Hurricane Floyd was in excess of 200 mph. If it had hit WDW in that angry state....we would have NO hotel or park to play in. In addition....these castmembers have homes and families and they should actually be taking care of THEM.
He grumbled and walked away.
When I returned to checkin...my castmember was gone.
When she returned, I had been upgraded to concierge at no charge....with a quiet....thank you.
Next...when I arrived on the concierge floor and got my WELCOME TO THE WILDIE....they saw the neck brace and took pity on me.
Each night something arrived in my room during turndown.....bowls of fresh berries, fruit and cheese, basket of Mickey chocolates....balloons and get well card from Mickey.
I had SOOOOOO many goodies...and it was a solo trip.
My last morning I asked for a serving tray from the restaurant and created a platter of goodies from all my leftovers and delivered it to the concierge staff.
Funny thing.....a few years later I took the tour of the Grand Californian at DL. Turns out our tourguide was sent to the Wildie concierge for training (he started at the Grand Cali as a concierge castmember when the Grand Cali frst opened). He was trained by some of the same people who took such good care of me that week at WDW.
It was not unusual for me to receive an upgrade at the Wildie....but this one was fabulous on a day I was truly feeling sorry for myself. Imagine, your doctor tells you NO RIDES 2 days before you leave for WDW!!!
Second story.......I was a
travel agent at the time of 911. I had guests at WDW that day - scheduled to return home. Disney allowed stranded guests to remain in their original rooms.....gave them park passes...all for NO CHARGE until they could make arrangements to fly home. It was a very classy thing to do during those first, emotional and horrible days.
