Classic ships deck 5

I feel like this may be a silly question, but I can’t find my answer anywhere. I have been doing a lot of research prior to booking my cruise and was pretty set on booking our stateroom on deck 5. Then, I saw a few videos where the vloggers mentioned, while in the atrium, that deck 5 was made shorter, since the kids club was on that level, so they could feel bigger in the space. When looking from the atrium are that looks the case, but also could just be an optical illusion.

My question is, if that is indeed true, and deck five has a lower ceiling, does it continue the entire deck, and the staterooms have a lower ceiling as well?

Apparently I have a thing for run on sentences too. Haha.

Deck 5 has lower ceilings than decks 3/4. We did the art of theme show tours of the magic and wonder and they talked about it... mentioned the kids club, etc.

I've only stayed on deck 2. I think all the stateroom decks have the same height ceilings including deck 5. Decks 3/4 are public spaces with higher ceilings, which makes it more noticeable that deck 5 is shorter while in the atrium area.

Yes. Deck 5 has a lower ceiling than all other decks, including in the staterooms. If you are 6 feet tall or shorter, it won't make a difference. We travelled with a very tall friend (6'6'') and he had to duck the light fixtures and doorways on Deck 5.

There are some cabins in deck 2 mid ship that can only sleep 3 because , I believe, of a lower ceiling. I have stayed in a secret porthole room deck 5 and it had a pull down bunk so assuming it was a normal height ceiling.

Decks 3, 4 and 5 have different heights to contribute to a forced perspective that makes the atrium look even higher than it is. The ceiling is in fact lower and as previous posters have said, if you're shorter than 6', it's not a big deal. I'm 6'2", so coming out of the theatre is a tad odd. I'm not sure if that height persists in the staterooms, we're also deck 2 types.

I will say that roving bands of teenage miscreants like decks 4 and 5, and we heard about them being loud late at night on deck 5 before. Not saying that would happen on your cruise, just relaying an experience. Also, deck 5 aft is right above Animator's Palate, so if you're one who puts kids down early there might be some residual noise. Again, never stayed on 5 but that was a consideration for us early on in our cruising.

Cheers!

Thanks for all the info. Staterooms already feel small, so if they are a few inches shorter (we aren’t super tall. Hubs is 5”10), I was thinking we would feel more closed in. We like deck 5 because we will do a veranda with an interior across the hall for our teenagers. Deck 5,6,7 seem like they all could work. We liked the idea of being closed to the kids club for our 4 year old. But it makes sense that there might be more kids running along deck 5.

We did deck 5 forward with the sideways inside stateroom. It didn't seem any shorter in the room and we had a pull down berth from the ceiling so I doubt it was. The room seemed much bigger being sideways though. There was almost no traffic from anybody forward because there are only a few staterooms and they are pretty tucked away and not in any heavy traffic pattern.

Thank you for posting this! DH is 6 ft 6 and we are booked on deck 5 for next year’s cruise! We may change decks based on this!

I thought I was told during an art of the theme tour that it was due to the lifeboats being level with deck 5

Ok, I had a REALLY poor sleep last night so my numbers may be off a little but we have done 2 cruises on the Magic and 3-4 on the Wonder. I’m right at 6 ft and yes the public areas feel a little shorter but unless someone is a bit taller or has a severe phobia of some sort, it shouldn’t be problematic. Right now, I know we stayed on deck 5 on the Fantasy can’t recall staying on deck 5 on the classics. While the Fantasy cabin was not a problem and seemed to be normal height I’ll have to defer on the cabin details of the classics.

No, they lowered the corridor ceilings so that the kids would feel bigger in the space and that is where the clubs are. The clubs themselves though have full height celings.

I had not heard that the stateroom ceilings were also shorter.

We sailed the Magic room, 5144. You will not see any lower ceilings in the staterooms! I cannot remember if the hallway ceilings were short the entire deck or not (it's been a few years). But you would see them around the kids club areas and probably not every where. But lets be honest, any deck that has staterooms doesn't have vaulted ceilings like you will find in public areas.

That is sort of what I was wondering. Like maybe it was just that particular area and then the rest of the deck shifted back up to normal. But others are saying it is indeed shorter in the staterooms. But I haven’t read any stateroom reviews that mentions rooms on deck 5 feeling shorter. Maybe if the cabins are shorter in height it’s so unnoticeable no one mentioned it. Maybe I’ll just book deck 7 to be safe. It’s just more $ for the interior room across the hall to do deck 7. 😩

We have stayed on Deck 5, and maybe I'm just thinking the ceilings in the room were shorter due to the hallways being shorter? It's been a few years, so while I thought the whole deck was shorter, maybe it is just the hallways.

That's interesting. I have stayed on deck 5 a few times, and sailed on the older ships numerous time. I never realized this!

We love staying on deck 5. It is so quick to get to everything and it always feels quicker walking forward to aft than walking down a huge hallway full of rooms. I have never noticed the ceiling being shorter so I am intrigued. If they are, the difference is negligible and it definitely would not deter me from booking there again.

We have sailed 4 times on the Magic and Wonder and we always stay on Deck 5. Yes the ceiling is lower because it's the "kids" deck but the cabins are regular size. My husband is 6'2" and he has no problem.

This makes me feel so much better! That was part of my rationale for wanting deck 5. I’m glad that if there is a difference, you don’t notice. Thanks!
