Class of 2022- High School Parents

Changing the topic from colleges for a moment… is your senior sending out graduation announcements? Is this still a thing?

I only ordered a handful of the "official" announcements to send to close family. I do plan to send a more casual grad announcement to extended family, friends, neighbors. Seems this is more the usual here in our area. The casual announcement usually includes a pic of the grad, along with plans after high school and sometimes any grad party info.

We did not order any of the "official" announcements from the school. Neither my son (class of 2019) nor my daughter (class of 2022) want a big graduation party, so ours will likely just be close family. And I feel weird sending announcements to people who aren't invited to the graduation or a party.

For my son's friends who did have graduation parties, it was much more common to have a photo card (Snapfish, Shutterfly, etc.) with the graduation/party info on it than to use the official school announcements.

We are only sending them out to very close friends and immediate family (the same people that are being invited to her very small party). I need to order these today

I hadn’t even thought of this. Thank you for the reminder! I did start the conversation with my daughter about a small party with immediate family and she is warming up to the idea. She really doesn’t like to be the center of attention so she agreed if we keep it small.

On another note, something really great happened this weekend. She was a finalist and had an interview for a full scholarship at App State and she got it. That really brought us back to the drawing board. But I think she is accepting the scholarship and moving forward with it instead of going to Valpo.
I had even applied for a Credit card to United Airlines to earn points for flying her in and out of Chicago. NC is mostly American Airlines lol. Oh well. I guess this is a good problem to have.

Heard from University of South Florida today - accepted! Now she has to decide between ASU and USF. ASU offered to pay half tuition. Not sure if USF will offer anything.
Congratulations! My son was also accepted to USF. Several relatives, including his mom, have gone there—it’s a very good school. He’s still holding out for UF, as well as some out of state schools (although he will have to get great financial assistance for those). It’s awesome to have the USF acceptance in his pocket though!

Congratulations to everyone’s kids getting their acceptances - very exciting!!

My DD is starting to get to know her roommate more and more - they seem very well matched. They haven’t met in person yet, but they have FaceTimed. She’s really looking forward to college - I love seeing her excitement.

DD got accepted today to a small school with a sports and merit scholarship that would pay for approximately 40% of her schooling. But it’s not her top choice. Top choice she was accepted at but would not play a sport and was offered merit $ that would cover 25% of her total costs. First choice is a better school so she will most likely go there, but she’s enjoying the acceptance and the idea of still playing her favorite sport. She is speaking to the dean of the curriculum to determine if the school she heard from today has a major that she really wants. She’s thinking it is similar but not really what she wants, so another point in favor of the first choice school. After she speaks to him, she will make the decision! Congrats to all of your students and 🤞🏼 everyone gets the replies they are looking for!

DD spent a lot of time talking about college last night (which is rare....first time in a while she's wanted to really TALK about it.) she cannot make up her mind between 2 state schools, in TN. and also semi-considering 1 out of state school in AL (more expensive). She's making pro/con lists, but not any closer to a decision....one of the cons on 1 of the schools, is that she knows a lot of kids from her high school that are going there, and a few she really doesn't care to see again. She does realize it's a fairly big campus, about 12,000, and will meet LOTS of new folks, but knowing that tons of kids from our county go to this one school is influencing her decision....we'll see how it plays out. but also need to start looking at housing ASAP, so need to make some decisions pretty soon!
We also still need to do senior pictures!!!

Congrats to all the kids with their acceptances and plans! So thankful for this thread!

Can we talk money for a moment? How are you guys planning on paying for school? We've saved some money in a 529 plan, but not nearly enough (anywhere from 1-3 1/2 years worth depending on the school), and there is some scholarship money. BUT, the three schools left on DS' short list are all private schools. One of them he basically got ~50% scholarship. BUT that school is $70K/year! :faint: Unfortunately it's my #1 choice (don't know where it is on DS list). My #3 (and I think DS' #3) is the cheapest.

We did Florida Pre-Paid, plus a Coverdell (instead of a 529 in case we needed funds for K-12), plus a small trust from the great-grandparents. If he goes to school in state, my son will also get a Florida Bright Futures scholarship, which is pretty awesome. If he goes out of state, we will depend on aid through the school, converting the pre-paid for out of state, the trust, some savings, and loans as necessary. He expressed some interest in ROTC initially but that is definitely waning.

My daughter just received her on campus housing assignment for fall. She is so disappointed! She is in an apartment with 5 other girls. All of the the other roommates are already 19 years old and returning students. All 5 of them are a friend group and requested to be roommates together.

My heart just sank when I saw that. My daughter is going alone and was really hoping that she would be put in a room with other new freshmen. I thought there was a very good chance of that since it is on campus housing.
The fact that they are already all a friend group and returning students makes it super hard and is not was she was envisioning. I'm so bummed! I just needed to vent this somewhere. I did call and the housing office was already closed. I'll call back tomorrow and try and request a room change, but it's probably not likely since they are already 100% full.

Is this a dorm or on campus apartments? The other girls must be sophomores? I'll bet they will move her - there is probably a lot of switching around this early in the process.
