Is anyone else dealing with this...

DS has been dating the same girl since their freshman year. She "is not crazy" (all DS will say) about him going away to college. She is going to attend a community college about 30 minutes away (coincidently near where DW works). I'm concerned he will let the relationship guide his college choice. DW & I have both told him he shouldn't do that, but we don't know how well he's listening.

That's definitely something I did not have to deal with (heck, I was lucky to have a date in my senior year), and neither did DW. Older DD went just an hour away and didn't have a long term SO, so this is new to us.

Now, I'm not that old, but when I was in college, I met and befriended 2 students who had dated since freshman year of HS - they both chose the same school in state so they could be together. They married after college and have been happily married with kids for 20+ years...and no financial detriment on the choice...

I don't think the nearby schools are necessarily the best option. Although the schools have the major he's interested in (Sports Management), I think he'd be better off going to a school at least close to a medium sized (ie: Cincinnati/Indianapolis) sized city in order to take advantage of more internship possibilities.

He doesn't have a leading candidate yet. We've toured five so far but I don't think any have totally grabbed him. He's going to make some repeat visits in the next 6 weeks or so to work out with their soccer teams (at three of the schools) and see how he likes that life.

Does everyone else get a bunch of unsolicited brochures/post cards/flyers from colleges? I mean, I could understand in state or region schools, but we're getting things from five+ hours away.

When signing up for the SAT or ACT there is a check box for opting in to communication from schools that opens up the floodgates for mail/e-mail. Perhaps your student checked this box. I made sure to mention to my junior to not check the box because he didn't need all that mail to begin a whole year early. When he was a senior I told him to check the box mostly because I was interested in what types of schools he would receive mail from, as he already knew he was only applying to two schools. We filled a shoe box with the college mail and it was mostly smaller schools, some that we had never ever heard of before. Most were less than competitive for admissions.

We're waiting for final financial aid packages and are planning to re-tour the top contenders before she makes a commitment, but I think she's made her choice. She got direct-admit into her program at the school she thinks is her top choice. I had no doubt she'd get into the university. It's a state school and not *that* competitive, but they have a great reputation for her program... Getting direct admit into that program is quite competitive (about 10% of applicants), so this is a win.

I would like her to tour the other top contenders though... we did not have great touring experiences the first time. (At one school, we weren't allowed to go into any buildings (COVID). At another, it was cold and pouring rain all day, etc.) She also toured this school after several of the others, so I want to make sure that it's not just "liked the most recent one I saw the most." and "that tour was better than the others."

Re-touring is a great idea! Similar to yours, we were only able to tour the campus, but not inside any buildings (besides the dorms). With students back in person, it might be a good idea for her to tour again with some life on campus. Make sure her top choice is still her top choice.

And then absolutely no response from the mid-level out of state schools. Very odd.

Chiming in late and need to catch up on details. Congrats to all and good luck as we wait out the rest of the decision dates.
DS has been accepted to 3 of 3 so far (Elon, Wofford, and College of Charleston) with 2 more decisions due by early March. Each of the 3 acceptances came before the stated decision deadline posted. He’s not indicated a clear front runner at this point so we shall see.

Several things about UCF from a proud Knight Dad:

1. They use rolling admissions, so something could come at just about any time.
2. A LOT of in-state students have UCF as a close #3 to UF and FSU, who announce their admissions in late February. A lot of those applicants are sitting on UCF acceptances and will accept if they don't get UF/FSU.
3. UCF's cutoff, I believe, in March 1. So when that date passes any unaccepted admissions go to students on their waitlist. A lot of those are typically students who got accepted to UF/FSU.
4. UCF sometimes offers Summer admission -- and that is their best-kept secret. All summer admission means is you have to take one online course in Summer B, and you're automatically in for the Fall. DD did that and entered Fall '20 with six hours of 4.0.

Thank you. I'm not hopeful she'll get into FSU since she got waitlisted for U of Miami. Also, it seems like the waitlisted for most of these colleges get an eventual "no" most of the time. At least that's the impression I get.

We live in a very very small town and a girl in her grade got accepted to U of Miami a couple of months ago, must have been early action. Would that have had an impact on my daughter's admission? I mean, are they reluctant to accept two girls from the same small town, since they are probably looking to fill the small pool of freshmen with as many diverse applicants as possible? Just a thought.

Marketing - a popular major I think. I think she may have selected Studio Art for a minor where she was able to.

Oh yeah, this girl ALSO selected marketing as her major!
