To bad the book idea was shot down, that would have been such a perfect gift!

We attended an end of school party last May and here was their little gift basket
A sandpail and shovel
Bubbles
Jumprope
beach ball
Sidewalk Chalk

also included were a library summer reading schedule, the cinema's free movie summer schedule, passes to the waterpark and the skating rink (these were donated in hopes of increasing traffic) and a coupon for the art and science center. I think there was also free drink coupon from Sonic and an Ice cream coupon from Braums. I dont know what you have in your area but could you get some free passes to something local to add to your inexpensive basket. Many places will give these out, especially to local schools.

I've done lots of these types of things for my kindergarten students over the years.
Another idea is bug catchers. Our Dollar Tree store has them starting in the spring. Many of our teachers keep a few in the classroom and the students bring them onto the playground to find bugs. Lots of fun. Our kindergarten classes also do units on insects near the end of the year so it is timely.
