CL Upgrade at Checkin??

Has anyone tried to upgrade to CL at checkin??

We are thinking about upgrading to CL at AKL for a couple days during our 2005 trip to do the safarri. I have heard it is less expensive to upgrade at checkin but I don't know how difficult it is to do this?

Also, if we only booked CL for 1 day for the safari would we then have to move to a different room?

Sometimes it is less expensive to upgrade at check-in, but if you want to do the concierge safari, that's a pretty big risk. If you're travelling during holidays or summer, then chances are pretty slim that they will have anything available. Secondly, the safari is only offered on Tuesdays and Saturdays so you would have to make sure you check in on Monday or Friday. Finally, the safari can be booked at 90 days out with a concierge reservation. There is a limited number of spots available and they can have a waiting list. On the plus side, you wouldn't necessarily have to move rooms. You can be given concierge privelages, but not be located on the concierge floor. If you are going to be disappointed in not getting the safari, then I wouldn't take the chance and would book concierge ahead of time. Not only will you most likely get a spot, but you'll also receive the pre-planning assistance that comes with reserved concierge rooms.

We were able to upgrade to AKL CL last Easter break, but it cost the same as if we had booked it ahead of time (with AP discount.) The only reason we didn't was that it was unavailable until check-in (apparently someone didn't keep CL, as I called clear up to the day we left.)

TammiMcMan is absolutely right, if the Safari is important to you, get CL now. We did not get a spot, as it was already booked and there was quite a waiting list. You also miss out on one of the best parts of CL, the pre-planning assistance.

Thank you both for the advice. We will just have to wait and see what the AP rates are for next summer (value season) and of course if we can get the AP rate.

Does anyone know what the rate was this past summer (value season)??

Thank you everyone. We will have to wait and see what's available and what the AP rates are next summer. I love planning trips, there is so much available we will have to decide what we want to do this next trip.
