City, Sand, and Savanna - Link to new trip report

I'm hungry just reading that

We should've at least stopped for a cocktail, like a Merry Berry or something, right?

Wow, so does it charm the enemy into wanting to cuddle or gum them to death?

Exactly. Very dangerous because it gets you to put your guard down. That reminds me, our dog -- I've said that if he were a Batman villain, he'd be "The Cuddler".

Great pool break!

:thumbsup2

Kid drama. Teen/Tween drama. Nothing like it. Sigh

Can't we all just get along?!?

Grand Flooridian. Good one!

Thanks! :teeth:

Where's the picture!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Gee, somehow it never even occurred to me! Imagine that.

Hey, I've played enough baseball to know as long as you have one strike left, you still have a chance.........

Swing for the fences.

That's what happens when you skim first, then go back and read, and THEN decipher what you read to take one more look............

Hey, I'm glad that you're going back to read at least.

To the Victor go the spoils, and a whole lot of :duck: around here........... It is easy to see who the jealous ones are with their constant complaining from being so far behind! :sad2:

Who can blame them when the stakes are so darned high.

Minor miracle that!

You ain't just :rolleyes1 Dixie.

Oh, not like you don't make it blatantly obvious when you are about to post an update with your Smiley parade, and even hinted the possibility earlier in the day......to Rosie even!

That's true, I did. But even then, I didn't think that I'd be posting it that evening. I really thought that it was a couple of days away yet.

Besides, stalking glennbo might not be on the list of Top 10 Hobbies, but I'm trying to do my little part to move it up the list.......... :tiptoe:

Yeah, thanks for that.

Glenn, catching up (we were in Florida for nine days).

Welcome back. I suppose you've noticed that it's not quite summertime in the north yet though?

Nice job to your parents getting out and doing things while you were gone. :thumbsup2

They had some gumption!

I love the pictures from around the pool (we never did get there last week) and can't wait to have an entire day there in September.

That should be nice -- a lot of kids back in school (ie. low crowds) and it'll still be nice and hot for a refreshing dip in the pool. Ahhhh.

Too funny about the fight and the locked bathroom door. I so remember those days and I don't miss them for a minute. :lmao::lmao::lmao:

Nice pictures of the GF. My husband would be right there with you in feeling like riff raff. However, he surprised me and said he wouldn't mind staying in the Villas. :crazy2:

And that could've been rough in your household with all the wrestling training! :crutches: (You know, I never knew when I'd use that Disboard smilie and I think I just found the perfect occasion!)

Buff guys? I'm right there with Judy. Husband or no husband. :rotfl2:

I've seen pictures of Mark in your trip reports and these guys couldn't hold a candle to him. ;)

Stumbled upon your TR a few days ago and now I am all caught up! I just love your mom and dad, they remind me of my grandparents so much!

Can't wait for more, hate that it is coming to an end, I was laughing so hard a times. Lets face it a TR without humor is like a Dole Whip without the float, still a Dis fan must do, but doesn't hit just the right spot!

I have to use your friend's idea of "Fav. T-Shirt of the Day"!

IMG_6983.jpg

His patronus is a koala bear. (Sorry to those who may not be familiar with it, but that's a little Harry Potter humor.)

Love the Harry Potter reference!

Any idea which character's wand that is or is it one of those rip-off "Birthday Wands?"

Construction was underway for the new DVC suites.

IMG_7017.jpg

That would be the suites that were under construction, are now for booking and undergoing refurb since it has been so long since this picture was taken.

Just sayin' (and just kidding!)

:goodvibes

Loved your update leading up to luau with some terrific pool time (is the pool deep in any places or pretty much the same depth in most places?), great bus mojo and a nice tour of the GF. I have not stepped foot in that resort yet. Looks beautiful!

Looking forward to reading about the luau!

Nice update! I'm glad to hear your parents could find their way around - nice that they could get out and explore a little. Great tour of the pool. It looks like the gal in the first pool bar pic is leaning over to pose for you! :rotfl2:

Sounds like James needed a little space and a lot of food. :goodvibes Looking forward to seeing how the girls liked the luau.

Hey, thanks for reading PrncessA, and :welcome:

Thank you, it was really nice to have my mom and dad along.

I've never even had a Dole Whip that wasn't a float. Just won't do it, doesn't make any sense. ;) And I like TRs that are humor-rich! :thumbsup2

I have to use your friend's idea of "Fav. T-Shirt of the Day"!

I thought it was funny that he made note of them!

Love the Harry Potter reference!

Glad you liked it!

Any idea which character's wand that is or is it one of those rip-off "Birthday Wands?"

I asked James and he said that it was just a generic one.

That would be the suites that were under construction, are now for booking and undergoing refurb since it has been so long since this picture was taken.

:goodvibes

Refurb?! Now that's pushing it! :goodvibes

Loved your update leading up to luau with some terrific pool time (is the pool deep in any places or pretty much the same depth in most places?),

It does get decently deep over towards the slide. Of course it's shallow at the end toward the pool bar, where the zero-entry section is.

great bus mojo and a nice tour of the GF. I have not stepped foot in that resort yet. Looks beautiful!

I saw how the "other half" lives. ;)

Looking forward to reading about the luau!

:)

Nice update! I'm glad to hear your parents could find their way around - nice that they could get out and explore a little.

They surprised me with their gumption, but I was glad that they didn't just stay put all day.

Great tour of the pool. It looks like the gal in the first pool bar pic is leaning over to pose for you! :rotfl2:

I know! I didn't notice that until I was putting the chapter together; sure didn't see it at the time I took the photo.

Sounds like James needed a little space and a lot of food. :goodvibes Looking forward to seeing how the girls liked the luau.

Yeah, I agree.

Thanks Tammie. I need to get over to your TR and get caught up.

Evening Glenn would you please call me when you are about to post an update , so I can beat Marv, but don't tell him!!!!:rotfl2:

Evening Glenn would you please call me when you are about to post an update , so I can beat Marv, but don't tell him!!!!:rotfl2:

Hi Rosie! :wave2: I'll do better than that -- I'll post right here, right now...hey, I'm about to put up a great big, 4-part mega-chapter on the luau. Get ready!

Just seeing some post going and checking in. :tiptoe:

Well, not back on the date you checked-in, but there's some posting going on now...

Now, where were we? Oh yeah. When we last left-off, we had gotten to the Polynesian with plenty of time to spare, so Judy and I had walked over to check out the Grand Flooridian. We walked back (passing Pacific Islander volleyball players, as you may recall) and rejoined the rest of our crew in a line that had now formed with other guests waiting to be let in to the Spirit of Aloha Dinner Show. (Which from this point forward I'll refer to as "the luau".) At about a quarter to 8pm they started letting us in, greeting us with a lei.

IMG_7025.jpg

IMG_7027.jpg

IMG_7028.jpg

From there, we were shuffled up to the photographer for the group photo. I had forgotten that they do this, similar to the photograph that they take before entering Hoop-de-doo. After the photo, we still had to wait a little longer and we were led to an open spot outside of the dining area that was gradually starting to fill up with people. As I was standing there, a man came up and said, "Hey Glennbo!" He recognized me from my trip reports. It was funny because he said that he didn't want to be creepy or anything; he didn't want to be "that guy". I had to feel for him because I don't know how you would approach someone whose trip reports you've read either, other than just coming up and saying "Hey". Then he said, "I recognized you! I recognized all of you!", with a hand sweeping toward the rest of my family. (Okay, you could've left that part out, I don't want Judy to get creeped-out! She's still trying to wrap her head around the Judy-sighting game.) He said that he just reads the DIS, doesn't post, but he liked my writing. I told him that he'll definitely get a mention in my next trip report (although even I didn't think that it would take so many months to get posted), and asked if he'd like to take a picture with me for it? No, he didn't want that, but was happy to talk with me and if I may say so, he seemed rather amazed that someone he'd seen on the internet was now here, live and in-person before him. Okay, I'm beating around the bush here out of humility...he seemed a little starstruck. I mean, in my mind, everyone should be starstruck around me, but no one ever is, so this was new for me too. I thanked him for saying hello, I did sincerely appreciate that. Then he told us how much we'd like the luau and went off to rejoin his group.

After he walked away, my mom asked me where he knew me from. I just said, "Oh, an internet message board" and I think that confused her enough that she let it drop!

Then we were finally let in to the dining area, and led to our table. We had great seats! Front row, and just slightly left of center-stage. I guess that would be near what they'd call "stage right". I think these were close to where Dan’s (FauntleroyFan07) seats were the year before when someone a table further back had a major blow-up over being located behind a pole that wasn't really in the way.

IMG_7029.jpg

We may have had to wait a little while to get in, but once seated we sure didn't have to wait at all for the first of the food to arrive. In fact, our bread, pineapple, and salad were already waiting for us. And you can see our great view of the stage.

IMG_7030.jpg

This last picture reminds me that I neglected to make a note of our server's name. I slipped up there. But she did a nice job in keeping us supplied throughout the meal. Oh, and I remember that Lauren had to talk to her about her allergies...she had to make sure that she brought her rice without any peas in it.

Here's a better shot of our bread, pineapple, and salad. (Oops, I guess it's actually pineapple-coconut bread, and the salad is more properly described as mixed greens with mango-poppy seed dressing.)

IMG_7032.jpg

And, I now know what to call the salad because I had my mom hold up the menu for me to take a picture. Cocktails for purchase on the left page, and the items included in the dinner service are on the right page.

IMG_7033.jpg

Gram and Poppy.

IMG_7037.jpg

The pewter leaf-design stand in the bottom of the picture just above is worth noting. There were a couple of them attached to each table (you can see them if you go back to the last few photos) and they were great for holding the buffet items that were brought to the table. But more importantly, because they were elevated a few inches it gave us more room on the table for our plates, silverware, glasses, etc. A great idea.

James discovers pineapple-coconut bread. Either that, or the world's biggest crouton.

IMG_7039.jpg

Judy and girls.

IMG_7040.jpg

The crowd.

IMG_7041.jpg

The band gave us a little dinner music as we enjoyed our first course. I'm not sure if the band is called "The Papayas" or if that box is just a prop.

IMG_7043.jpg

I told the kids not to fill up on salad "'cause that's where they get ya!" But meanwhile I had some salad, a couple of pieces of pineapple, and 3 slices of pineapple coconut bread. It's interesting -- the breads at the Polynesian (at the luau, Kona Café, and 'Ohana) are all very good but different from one another.

Then as we wrapped up our first course, the show started as this lady came out and talked to us. I want to say that she was "Aunty-something" but I may be getting confused with Aunty’s Beach House at Aulani. I have to say that she was a little too sappy, syrupy. I guess saccharine is the word I’m looking for. Cloyingly sweet. Sorry Aunty, but yeah I just met you so I’m not ready to call you "Aunty" just yet.

IMG_7045.jpg

Then we met a couple more characters and something told me that by the end of the show the tomgirl was going to turn into a cute little thing who would win the affection of the big-dopey guy. But I don’t know, has Disney ever written a plotline like that before?

IMG_7048.jpg

IMG_7050.jpg

Then they threw in some Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride and some more actors/dancers.

IMG_7052.jpg

IMG_7055.jpg

I don't remember who this girl is, but the grin on the guy's face tells me that she just might give the tomgirl a run for her money.

IMG_7056.jpg

Here, I think the guy is telling the tomgirl that he doesn't even know who that other girl is. "Your picture's in my wallet and I'm sitting on it. If that isn't love, then I don't know what is."

IMG_7057.jpg

At 8:30, our entrees arrived. This is the only picture I took of the entrée platter because right after I took it this food got transferred to our plates and absolutely devoured!

IMG_7059.jpg

I ended up eating 2 halves of chicken, 3 ribs, a mound of rice, and some veggies (broccoli, carrots, and sugar snap peas). Yeah, I was full. I wrote in my notes that the chicken and ribs were excellent, as were the bread and rice. I seemed to have left the veggies out, but I'm sure that was just an oversight.

Judy didn't like the free wine. She started with the Chardonnay, then switched to the Rosé, and finally went with water. I remember that I didn't like the free sangria at Hoop-de-doo either.

Then, there was more show to be had. I'll be honest, I don't remember the plot at all so feel free to make up your own as you go through the pictures. Heck, that's what I started doing a few paragraphs ago.

IMG_7061.jpg

IMG_7062.jpg

IMG_7063.jpg

IMG_7065.jpg

They invited all the little kids up onto the stage, which made for a nice photo opportunity.

Then they asked for people celebrating anniversaries to come up and dance. Gram and Poppy went up of course, and I tried to capture it with a few photos and some video.

IMG_7068.jpg

IMG_7069.jpg

IMG_7071.jpg

==> video of Poppy and Gram dancing

Later on, James asked me why Judy and I didn't go up, and I said that I was just trying to get some photos and video of it, but I think he was right -- I missed a unique opportunity there. Oh well. The moment passed pretty quickly.

Then there was more show...

IMG_7075.jpg

...which may or may not have been just a way to announce...

IMG_7077.jpg

...that dessert was coming out!

IMG_7078.jpg

Our desserts.

IMG_7082.jpg

IMG_7085.jpg

James finished his and went and sat on the stage. It looks like he must've spilled something on his shirt, but at least it cleaned up all right. What's the expression? You can dress him up, but you can't take him out?

IMG_7086.jpg

IMG_7087.jpg

Me taking pictures of James on the stage started a string of copy-cat photographer-parents, and pretty soon a cast member had to come out and shoo them away because the show was about to start again.

And rather than that unmemorable plotline, instead, we have a dancing warrior girl. Now we're talkin'!

IMG_7090.jpg

IMG_7091.jpg

IMG_7093.jpg

IMG_7094.jpg

They said that they would showcase the different traditional dress and dance of various South Pacific islands: Tahiti, Samoa, Tonga, New Zealand, and Hawaii. But I don't know which goes with these pictures. I guess I should've taken better notes.

IMG_7097.jpg

IMG_7099.jpg

IMG_7100.jpg

IMG_7102.jpg

Yes ladies, there were male dancers too. (Completely unnecessary, in my opinion. But since this is an equal-opportunity trip report, I'll post some pictures.)

Back to the love-story plotline. This girl found a guy.

IMG_7119.jpg

And the tomgirl found a flower for her hair, and a dress. Huh! Whattayaknow!

IMG_7122.jpg

"Aunty" (if that's what her name was) brought out some more dancers...

IMG_7123.jpg

IMG_7124.jpg

...who brought people up on stage from the audience.

IMG_7128.jpg

IMG_7130.jpg

IMG_7132.jpg

Then it was back to dancing warriors again.

IMG_7136.jpg

This warrior guy was pretty fierce looking, but he reminded me of Javier Bardem in "No Country for Old Men".

IMG_7137.jpg

"What's the most you ever lost on a coin toss?"

And then the ladies came out swinging these bolo-weapon things.

IMG_7140.jpg

Hey, that's a pretty cool yo-yo trick, but can you "walk the dog"?

IMG_7142.jpg

Then, then, then...and only then, we got to the grand finale. The fire-knife guy.

IMG_7144.jpg

IMG_7146.jpg

IMG_7149.jpg

Under the legs.

IMG_7165.jpg

Sitting down.

IMG_7166.jpg

IMG_7167.jpg

Lying down.

IMG_7171.jpg

Good pose.

IMG_7173.jpg

Bartender, make mine a double.

IMG_7175.jpg

IMG_7179.jpg

IMG_7180.jpg

Ta dah, oh yeah, I brought it!

Then the lights came on, and a little more singing and dancing, while any loose-ends were wrapped-up, plot-wise.

IMG_7183.jpg

IMG_7186.jpg

IMG_7187.jpg

IMG_7192.jpg

And with waves and alohas and blown kisses I took my last luau picture at 10:04pm. (And that was just from my side of the camera -- it sure ain't easy to take a picture while doing all that stuff!)

IMG_7196.jpg

It was a fun show. Like I already mentioned, the plot wasn't much to write home about (or on the DIS about), and "Aunty" was a little much for me to take as I also already mentioned, but overall it was good family fun. The fire-knife guy was way cool and oh yeah, there were dancing girls, I just remembered. The food, of course was also great and we were stuffed!

Up next: Step outside for another show
First a detour to talk about our next trip - HHI

Great update, Glenn. I'll leave the Judys to the pros.

We have never done one of these dinner shows, not even when the kids were little. I like the looks of the food at this one you were at (and I love the Poly so that is a plus). And the male dancers...yes, I was glued to your pictures.

I like the guy twirling the fire too.

What sweet pictures of your mom and dad. :)

You did a great job capturing the Luau. Looks like a wonderful show and you did have great seats.

The Fire/knife guy shots were excellent.

Looks like everyone enjoyed the show and the food.

Holy massive updates!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Between yours and Dan's reviews, it really looks like a lot of fun and the food looks good.

Not surprised the wine was meh, I didn't care for the free sangria either.

You got some lovely pics, eye candy for everyone, but the best of all is

Gram and Poppy.

:thumbsup2

But you did miss the boat not dancing with Judy!

Great update

Great update, Glenn. I'll leave the Judys to the pros.

That's fine, it can be one of those "don't try this at home" kind of things. ;)

We have never done one of these dinner shows, not even when the kids were little. I like the looks of the food at this one you were at (and I love the Poly so that is a plus).

Oh yeah, they're fun, especially with the whole family. I forgot to put in the post...between the Luau and Hoop-de-doo, I'd probably rate the food a little better at the Luau and the entertainment a little better (just more "fun") at Hoop, giving the edge to Hoop for me personally.

And the male dancers...yes, I was glued to your pictures.

You're welcome.

I like the guy twirling the fire too.

You don't see that every day.

What sweet pictures of your mom and dad. :)

Aw, thanks! :goodvibes

You did a great job capturing the Luau. Looks like a wonderful show and you did have great seats.

I thought I was probably posting too much, like so much that I could've added a spoiler alert, but then I thought, hey, anybody that's read this much of my trip report should know what to expect!

I loved the seats, some of the best in the house!

The Fire/knife guy shots were excellent.

It was fun shooting that! I have a bunch more, but they all look pretty similar so whittled them down to just a few. I tried to self-edit!

Looks like everyone enjoyed the show and the food.

Yep!

Holy massive updates!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, that was some of why it took so long to post since the last chapter. Partly because there was so much to edit and work on, and partly because I knew how much there was to edit and work on.

Between yours and Dan's reviews, it really looks like a lot of fun and the food looks good.

I liked the food and sure got enough to eat, that's for sure. The entertainment was what you would expect from a luau, but nicely done.

Not surprised the wine was meh, I didn't care for the free sangria either.

Yeah. At least it wasn't as bad as the reception I was at one time when Judy sent me to get her a rosé and I watched the bartender use one of those tap things like they would use for seltzer water...he pushed a button fill the glass half with white wine, then pushed another button on it to fill the rest with red.
Smiley-jawdropper.gif

Hey, I bought Judy a bottle of Conundrum the other day -- I think I had seen maybe on one of MEK's reports that you had recommended it? So, if we like it I'll take the credit and if we don't, I'll tell Judy where I heard about it. ;) Just kidding, we haven't tried it yet but I already told her that I heard it was good from the DIS!

You got some lovely pics, eye candy for everyone, but the best of all is

Gram and Poppy.

:thumbsup2

Thanks, yeah that was nice.

But you did miss the boat not dancing with Judy!

I did. But it really did go fast, they have to keep on schedule. I wanted to get some pictures and video, and what I took was all that I had time for. And if you played the video, you saw that it was only a couple of seconds!

Well, there is nothing better than starting a show by getting lei'd. (Hey, somebody had to say it.)

Honestly, I think it's tres cool to be recognized like that. It's amazing how many people read the DISboards so I'm certainly not surprised you'd be recognized. I am surprised it doesn't happen more often, but I'm guessing a lot of people don't want to be "that guy".

Wow, looking at the crowd shot, you really did have a great table. There's a lot of people packed in there.

Gram and Poppy dancing... Yeah, I'm pretty much a sap.

Not gonna lie... I love doing random photos (like your photos of James on the stage) specifically to see if anyone follows suit. Usually they do which I consider a huge victory.

You're a bigger man than me Glenn as I promise there would be no male dancer photos. Good on you though, something for everyone.

Wow, Tomboy-girl found a dress and was the pretty girl all along. Somebody should make that into a movie.

Hard to believe, I know.

I'm the bride I'm the bride!!!!! :bride: Whooo HOOO !!

:rolleyes1 Guess I got carried away... :flower3:

You weren't online when I first posted, I thought you were going to miss it....but, you are correct! :cheer2: Congrats!

Had a long day at work and got home late. Was on the phone and just had the opportunity to log on when I saw the update.
I was hoping you know didn't beat me to it. :rolleyes1
