Hi all,

Firstly can i say what a great, friendly and informative board this is. Not to mention addictive.

We are visiting DLR from the UK for 5 days in May, as a stop over to visiting family in New Zealand.

We would like to visit a shopping outlet during our visit. Upon searching the net, the nearest one to DLR seems to be Citadel.

We will not have a car as my DH does not feel confident to drive in LA.( We did LA for our honeymoon and we have never seen anything like the traffic and highways. )

What would be the easiet/cheapest way of getting to the outlets?.

I have looked at a few shopping tours but a lot of them visit downtown LA and can last up to 8 hours. Our 2 DD's are 4 and 13mths, so we don't think that is approriate for them.

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you in advance

Carrie

Welcome to the Disboards! :goodvibes

I can't help with transportation to the Citadel but just wanted to also recommend the Ontario Mills Outlet. It's not that far from DLR and it's huge. I've heard that they get more visitors per year than DL! I'm not sure about transportation there either but thought i would throw out that suggestion.

The cheapest and the easiest way of getting there are two completely different things.

The cheapest way would be to take public transportation...however...with 2 little ones, and not having taken public transportation in the area, I can't in good conscience reccommend it, at least not that long of a trip. I plugged the addresses into the Trip Planner at metro.net and it'd take over an hour, with a transfer. My frame of reference is that of an adult with no kids to look after, who is used to taking LA/OC public transportation (I'm an LA native who's only lived in AZ a couple of years), and I myself would think that quite a ride . The upside is it'd cost about $3 roundtrip for each person, but...it's maybe not the best idea.

If you have your heart set on visiting the Citadel outlets, and don't want to drive (I can't blame you...I'm used to driving in LA, and it is still sometimes, ok, alot of the time :scared1: Hence my knowing all about public transportation in the area! It's just easier alot of the time!), I think the best route that doesn't involve the daylong tour would be taking a taxi there. It would be really expensive, though...I'm guessing about $50 each way, if not more.

Hopefully, someone else has a better suggestion!

As a local I have NO idea how to do it without a car - but the good news is that it's a straight shot up the 5 freeway so easy to do from DL. Maybe you should rent a car for 1 day? Assuming you'll be buying lots it will be hard to take much back on public transportation. You should be able to rent a car from one of the hotels near DL.

I went to the Citadel 2x this Christmas season after not going for many years - it's turned into a decent outlet - lots of variety. There is a customer service area where you can sign up and get some discount tickets - if you're AAA the discounts are even better.

I just found this though - shuttle from anaheim:

Says beginning in June - don't know if that's 2010 or 2011...

I've always wondered about it as we drive by but we never have time to stop.

I am not a huge fan of the Citadel Outlets...but I really like the Cabazon Outlets and the one that is right next door (the name of shich escapes me right now). They are in the other direction, towards Palm Springs, perhaps
1 1/2 hours. A bit further but...nicer shops and no crazy L.A. driving.

OT--When we were driving in London, we thought it made L.A. traffic look like a pleasant stroll. You guys are nuts (bonkers) and on the 'wrong' side of the street!!

OT#2--Whenever I respond to a thread and LavendarPeach is also there, it makes we feel like we should add "no relation".:rotfl::rotfl:

I've only been to the Citadel once and it was about 12 years ago. I wasn't that impressed but it was so long ago that it might have changed by now?

I like the Cabazon Oulets too but it is quite a bit further out. Boy it sure is windy there though!

Yes, we're members of the Peach family, lol.

Thank you for the replies and the link.

Yes London is crazy, we also try to avoid driving there but then so do most of the locals. Good job we have a good underground system. We are from Cardiff, Wales so the roads are relatively normal here.

Ok well Citadel is truly awesome to start off with we went in November on our visit from Australia. In November they just opened another 32 outlets and its true outlets nothing like the junk ones we get in Australia

We did a full day shopping tour through Grayline - but i wouldnt recommed it they also run a half day Stars Homes tour and half day shopping which takes you to Citadel which i would recommend!

We had almost 4 hours at Citadel and my DH and i bought more than the rest of the people on the bus!

Got to love good USD dollar for us!
