Circlevision

I'm not sure what an Onmi is but the Circle-Vision theaters at WDW have screens all the way around the walls of the circular shaped theater. In order for guests to fully appreciate the Circle-Vision, there are no seats in this theatre, only rails for the guests to lean against. The movies are absolutely wonderful exprience!

It is shot with 9 film cameras (rolling simultaneously) arranged in a CIRCLE with all of the backs of the cameras "touching" and all of the lenses pointing outward. This "odd-looking camera contraption" was mounted on top of cars, or hung below the belly of airplanes to allow it to freely move through crowds, down streets, or high above interesting locales.

This system provides 9 film images that can be projected fully in a circle (on 9 screens which have their side edges touching) around the upper half of the walls inside of a circular (cylindrical) theater.

The audience remains standing during the show (hand-rails are provided) and viewers can freely turn fully around to view the film image in the complete circle arc.

There are 8 channels of audio (and speakers) that also circle the room so the audio effects can come "from" any area of the image.

Hang on tight to the rail. Sometimes the view is as if you were in a plane and it plays tricks on your mind. You'll start swaying with the video. Can be fun.

Or can be sick-making. I'm not very prone to motion-sickness, but O Canada nearly did me in! Very beautiful, though.

Oh, thanks a lot, you little troublemaker! Now I will be singing that little tune all day today! :goodvibes

"Nothing in the theater moves. However the presentation can be intense for some folks. If you feel dizzy or nauseous, hold on to the railing and close your eyes for a moment and the feeling should go away."

To experience these shows to the utmost you might want to go twice, facing "forward" one time and facing "backward" the second time.

I do get dizzy in these shows (and also in Omni, big screen face one way non-3D, shows). One way to reduce nausea and also not miss too much of the show is to close your eyes mostly, opening your eyes momentarily every so often and you will see a series of still shots every one or two seconds instead of the motion.

That's why I have never seen any of the circle-vision movies at WDW. They wouldn't bother me, but they would have my husband very ill.

The CircleVision technology was state-of-the-art in the late 70s / early 80s. It's aged pretty well. But it doesn't compare to the feeling of immersion that IMAX sometimes delivers (in my opinion).
