Perhaps we should pay more attention to the content of the polls that are being tossed about in the news (about the war, about Bush, etc) instead of just the raw numbers.
::yes:: I believe that is why some people tend to disregard most polls. If you've studied almost anything about how polls are constructed/conducted, the real proof is in the poll content, construction and execution. Those three can be used to produce almost any result one wants. Factor in what part of the population is to be polled and how large a sample one polls and one can produce results to prove almost anything.

*SIGH* My point was that every poll, especially political ones, is flawed in that exact way. The pollsters can sway the outcome of the poll in any number of ways, not just by limiting the answers/choices, but also by the way the question is phrased, the way the pollster asks the question (which words are emphasized, tone of voice, inflection/pitch), and most importantly, by the population selected to participate in the poll (both size and makeup).

It not just the answers that can cause a poll to be flawed.

This is so true. They always say things like "60% of Americans disagree with the Iraq War", which makes it seem like 60% of Americans are anti-Iraq War. OK....if they called me and asked me "agree" or "disagree", I would have said "disagree", but that's not the whole story. You need to know WHY I disagree. I'm not anti-Iraq War, I just disagree with the way it's being run. Yet, I'd be one of those 60% that CNN would be using to make the President look bad.

No poll is ever going to give the whole story. The President's approval rating is low.....so, the country is turning Democrat. No. I'd be in the majority disapproving of the President, but it's because he's going soft on things like Illegal Immigration. If you can't get the reasons behind people's choices, any poll will give a flawed result.

Yes and if no one protests it will continue.

Yes, it WILL continue..... has been that way since the beginning of time, and will continue, and continue....

Ummmmm, so Okay, we should disband the whole military, the police force, fire departments, dangerous industrial jobs, etc...

Heck, we should just discontinue EVERYTHING!!!!

ummmm..... Yeah right....

Just wanted to add...

Just WHERE is the so called VICTIM here!!!

So true, as long as there is a Bush in the White house there will be unneccesary deaths! Couldn't agree more!

 There is a science (of sorts) to polling. I took a course in audience research and analysis once; there are all sorts of rules dealing with how questions are constructed, how the poll is presented, the order of the questions, how large a sample one must do and so on. Based on your sample size, you can know, before the poll is conducted, what your margin of error will be. The higher the margin of error, the more statistically irrelevant the poll becomes (i.e., it is not an accurate reflection of the general population).

That's why I don't place a lot of faith in most polls -- because many times the content of the poll is not revealed, just the results. Although, the margin of error can be somewhat telling sometimes.

That's both a sweeping generalisation and a defeatist statement. If we have any measure of decency within ourselves we will not pursue war just because we have had wars in the past.

The current American administration and United Kingdom government have undersold the lives of so many by starting a war based on known flawed evidence. I hope to God that such a flagrant disregard for life is never displayed again.

To use your own statement: "That's both a sweeping generalisation and a defeatist statement." If we have any measure of decency within ourselves we will continue to pursue liberty and democracy because that is what we enjoy and what most people in the world hunger for.

Hey! Speak for yourself! I'm quite happy being a lemming.

What is wrong with being against the war, any war ? Is it a mental illness to believe something and do anything to change it ?

Not sharing ones point of view is not being crazy , or stupid.

That she is being used , no one knows. I guess if she were a men , we would marvel at him being able to start a movement that brought 100 000 people in the street of washington. But , since she is a women , maybe it is her hormones that are fluctuating , of she need to see a psychiatrist.

maybe she does not talk for you , even if you lost a close one in the war , but so far , no group went in the street to support the troops in numbers that equal her. Nobody tried to send the message contrary to hers , that this war is fought for the good rteasons : that there was weapons of mass destructions , that peopel are better off now in Irak ( without electricity , there cities in rumbles ). More people are dying now in the streets of Bagdad , after the " liberation " due to violence than before the American intervention.
If Cindy is so crazy to go protest that , I invite everybody who agrees with the war to put as much energy to defend the reasons , the actions and the results of this war. But I guess putting a magnetic ribbon on a car is lot energy to put to defend what ones believe.

I can't speak for everyone, but, for me, it's not her being against the war that makes me think she's mentally unstable. She deliberately got arrested. She's made statements about "occupied New Orleans" because the military was down there trying to save people from the floods and hand out food and water. She's sided with Palestinian terrorists who blow up innocent Israelis. Apparently, THAT violence is OK with her. She calls the terrorists in Iraq killing people "freedom fighters." Those people aren't out killing American soldiers to defend their land, they're killing Iraquis looking for work....innocent Iraqui citizens trying to earn a living are being blown up by these "freedom fighters". Those statements go beyond being against the war. Anyone who thinks the military is "occupying" New Orleans and should leave has gone off the deep end.

As for people supporting the war going out and showing support. There is a group of war moms who staged a counter-protest called "You Don't Speak For Me, Cindy". Ironically, they didn't get much press.

The best I can do is a magnet on my car and a care package to DH's former unit every now and then. With all due respect to Ms. Sheehan, I have a job and can't just travel across the country for months at a time. I agree with her war message....I agree it's time to bring the troops home. But, I don't consider it courageous to break the law and smile while being carried off to prison.

Just my opinion....yeah, she annoys me....but, so does the President when he calls his 8pm conferences and disrupts Survivor. I agree with her message, but not her reasoning or methods. I don't think she's "crazy", but I do think she needs help dealing with her grief.

I assume you mean not sympathetic. See, when people like you use the word "pleasant" to describe anything connected to this ridiculous war, it clears a lot up for me.

I did indeed mean Not sympathetic. You may not like my choice of word "pleasantly" but anything that denegrates the troops, and that is what she has been doing, and anyone that assumes to speak for other Gold Star Mothers, and that is what she has done, doesn't deserve support. I am glad to see that most do not agree with her.
