I heard today that the glass slipper Cinderella famously wears wasn't actually glass originally. It was made of squirrel fur and the translation from french caused the misunderstanding!

So Cinders actually had her foot in a squirrel and not in a delicate glass shoe.

If you ever get a chance, the original fairytale is more gruesome than even a fur slipper-- the stepsisters actually cut off parts of their feet in the story to fit them into the slipper! One the heel and the other the toes-- they get into the carriage and pass by some crows on the way to the castle and the crows call out-- Ra Coo Ra Coo-- there's blood in her shoe! And they each get discovered. I swear, I am not making this up! It was so disturbing when I read it years ago.. I never forgot it! It doesn't really match the glass slipper story either...
