I apologize if this has already been posted...I haven't had much time to search. I was wondering if people would be willing to share their Christmas traditions. I have a young family and am looking for new ideas to make the Christmas season more memorable and fun for my family. Thanks for any ideas!

We always put up our tree over thanksgiving! We go to a cut your own and decorate it over the whole weekend along with the rest of the house. We always set a fire, put the kids in front of it with cocoa and popcorn, and we get a little apperitif for us (Baileys!) and put on the Christmas music. This sets the tone for the season. We read a different Christmas book each night, or a chapter of a longer one. These special books only comeout during the season and go back away with the rest of our Christmas goodies. We have an advent wooden advent calender from llbean, that you can put tiny treats in each day. We also go to Santa's Village in New Hampshire every year the next weekend. THis is a small sweet little theme park that has the most realsitic santa, live reindeer and a great little amussement rides. It is in the WHite Mountains, and such a sweet place for all of us. The kids look forward to all the decorations, and we add a new one each year. This year it is a music box with a small Christmas village. I can't wait to show the kids when it is time. Because our kids are still small, they don't get out at night a whole lot, and we take a drive one night and look at all the outside decorations one night. We also have taken the kids to the Nutcracker several times. They loved it! We always have Christmas eve at Church and eat a buffet at home afterwards. Stories are read, one small gift is opened, new pjs are also given and the DKs put the cookies and carrots out for Santa. These are just a few of our traditions. Making cookies, sharing times with friends, and doing some kind deeds for others are also part of our holiday season. When I was growing up, one tradition my parents always did, was to take us to the Christmas show at Radio City in NYC. Boy, no wonder I am so tired when our relatives leave staying a week at Christmas! I can't wait to hear what other folks do.

On Christmas Eve the kiddos open new pjs and also a new game. We spend the rest of the evening playing that game together. Last year was Toss Across - not sure what we'll do this year.
DH & I have mimosas every Christmas morning. DH makes Christmas morning breakfast. He really gets into it. Sometimes he asks what everyone wants, some years he surprises us.
I'm starting to collect Christmas books - for kids and adults. And like the previous poster only get them out during the holiday season.
Gosh, it seems like there should be more. Looking forward to reading how others celebrate!

well about 1week before Christmas, we will be at WDW. So, we will be enjoying the Holiday lights there.

Usually, though, we go to our local zoo and see the lights there.
We take a drive through neighborhoods and enjoy the lights.

On Christmas morning I have a sausage/potato casserole that was put together the night before, and just put it in the oven while the kids open their gifts.
We always put on Christmas music when the kids get up.

Lets see...we also look at our old videos of Christmas past. That is the most fun!
Of course, if you are just starting, you won't have too many videos.
the most fun the kids have, watching the cats play in the wrapping paper.

We made our own family treeskirt. I bought a plain red treeskirt. Every year we paint the boy's hands gold and put their handprints on the skirt. We also make an ornament from white felt. We use gold glitter paint to write the year and decorate it.

It's funny we were sharing about this tonight at a Ladies Ministry meeting @church. Our devotion was about traditions and our speaker shared a cassette recording from 1979 where her father would gather all the children on Christmas morning and state the date/year, their names and ages and each child would sing a Christmas song or poem or some funny something. It was so funny and touching. Although we're in the age of MP3's, etc...I still think it would be clever to have an audio recording of your family's Christmas eve or Christmas morning excitement for years to come. It was so moving to hear theirs from years ago.

On Christmas Eve, we always deliver cookies/baked goods to our neighbors. My daughter loves to make chocolate covered pretzels so we make some of those. I also cook the ham, make up the relish trays etc. We normally have a buffet type Christmas dinner where we eat all day! The kids always get new PJ's and one other mom/dad gift. When my son was 3, we had chocolate pudding pie and he was convinced it was "Batman" pie, so every year we have Batman pie in his honor. We sit around the tree and just talk and have a quiet Christmas eve with music playing.

We do have a tradition with the tree, my tree every year has very few store bought ornaments. Since I have so many children, I have so many school made ornaments. My whole tree is covered in things my children have made for me every year. The kids get to put the ornaments they made as well as their special ornaments on the tree. I have an ornament from my son who is now 22 and married that he made for me in kindegarten. I have thought the time has come to let him and his wife decide if they want to come and get some of the things for their tree.

Would anyone be willing to post their xmas morning recipes?

Pancakes from a mix, fried eggs, and scrapple. No recipes here!

Some of our traditions:

We don't do Santa as real; my kids know he's pretend but that it's fun to pretend. So we do look for Rudolph's nose on Christmas Eve as we're driving home from church. (Radio towers, red airplane lights, etc.)

Our church has an early Christmas Eve service specifically designed for families with little kids. It's a half an hour of familiar carols, the Christmas story, and maybe a little bit of special music. After that we go out for dinner, and then go home, read the Christmas story from Luke and The Night Before Christmas, etc. We leave out cookies and Diet Dr. Pepper for Santa. (We make slice and bake cookies sometime during the day on Christmas Eve.)

In the morning the kids do stockings first. If someone wakes up early they can go look in the living room and see that Santa came, but they have to wait until everyone is up before opening anything (including stockings.) There's always something hanging out of the stocking just to make it more tantalizing.

They get three toy-like presents from Santa because of the three wise men. They get books and clothes from us.

We usually have a roast or something fairly easy to prepare for dinner on Christmas day.

We don't go anywhere on Christmas day. If grandparents want to see us they're welcome to come over.

I don't have any family traditions on my side of the family, but my husband's family has a wonderful family tradition. On Christmas Eve, my mother-in-law's family gathers at her house and we have a huge dinner. The only bad thing about this year is that Christmas Eve falls on a Saturday, so we will be in a rush to be there on time since everyone gathers at 5 p.m. We have to drive from Atlanta to Delaware!

This was a BIG issue when my DK's were little, we would have to drive to one GP house then to another for dinner. Finally after dragging my DK's away from new toys, I put my foot down and everyone comes to us. If they don't want to come, we will see them the next day.
Our favorite tradition is Santa wraps the room! The doorway and opening to my livingroom (where the tree is) is completely covered with Christmas paper and a large bow. This way if anyone gets up first, no one can see the tree until everyone is awake. My DK"s love breaking thru the paper and checking out the presents, they think of new ways to break thru the paper every year. Even though they are now 12 and 15, they still like to have the room wrapped.
This also slows down the day. After preparing for months, it is nice to be able to slow down and enjoy the excitement! We can even get a cup of coffee/tea before the paper starts flying!!
Another tradition is my DK's get a new christmas ornament every year as a gift. It usually is something that they did that year, a bike when they learned to ride, Mickey Mouse to remember our WDW trip, etc.

We have Christmas Eve dinner at our house every year with my side of the family. My father purchases and cooks all the food. We have tons of seafood and my house smells like shrimp for days . . . :goodvibes

After our company leaves, the kids get settled down and get ready for bed. While I am cleaning up the kitchen, DH goes upstairs and reads The Night Before Christmas every year.

My kids are now 16 and 12 and they still love to keep that tradition. :goodvibes

My kids are now 17 and 20, but we still do things the same way we always have, except our DD is allowed to sleep over at her brothers house on Christmas Eve so they can arrive at "home" together in the morning. That is very special for them.
On Christmas Eve we go to my sisters house for her annual Family Christmas Party and then we go to church from there. We go home and stuff the stockings and put out the presents. Enjoy a glass of wine while admiring the tree.
In the morning the kids arrive, the sisters arrive, mom lives with us so she gets up, andwe all head out to the living room. Even though we have put everything under the tree, and stuffed the stockings and nibbled the treats left out for "Santa" (yes, we still do this too, I dont know why) there is something magical about Christmas Morning. We are just mesmerized by the tree. We pop some cinnimon buns in the oven and put out the coffee and juice.
Everyone opens their stocking, and enjoys the little trinkets. Then dad announces that its time to find the Christmas Pickle. (That is the glass "pickle" hung on the tree. (we are of German decent and this is tradition). The person who finds it, gets to open the first present. We all watch and when they are finished, they choose the next gift to be opened by someone else.
During the gift opening we serve the cinnimon buns and usually fresh fruit. Lots of coffee!!
We have always done it this way with a few changes because of the kids ages, but for the most part its always been the same.

We are a young family too. For feast of St. Nick on Dec.6 we have the kids leave a shoe in the window with their list in their shoe. They leave the shoes out on the 5th for the eve of the feast. When they wake up in the am they find goodies in their shoes such as a baggie of chocolate gold coins (like the story). I also give them their new holiday jammies then too. This is what my parents did for me and my grandma for my dad.

Since my dd3 was born we have watched the old "White Christmas" movie every year on Christmas eve. I just love that movie, and my dd loves it. We do not watch it at all until Christmas eve. This makes the movie just wonderful, and really sets Christmas in for my little one. She loves to sing to the music, dance, and loves the old time dresses...As do I. We as a family set down with my family and the inlaws and watch the movie, eat popcorn, and talk about Christmas past..... I hope you find something extra special for your family. I would not take anything for our special movie night...... :goodvibes

The only gifts around the tree to this point on Christmas Eve are from family. After dinner it's games and hot chocolate around the fire, and then about an hour before bed each person chooses one gift to open. Kind of a pre-view.

Everyone really enjoys that, and for the little ones it takes a bit of the edge off of waiting. Then after everyone is asleep Santa places gifts around the tree for Christmas morning. I still don't get it. . . the chimney is too small and all the doors and windows are locked. . .

Last year, DH wasn't feeling well on Christmas Eve, so we snuggled on the couch and watched A Christmas Story on TNT. then went to bed and left the TV on all night with it on (they do 24 hours of A Christmas Story). I remembe aking up a couple of times to different parts of the movie. I kinda liked that.

When we lived around Dallas we took one evening and went looking at Christmas lights. One year we took a friend, another year it was just the two of us and the dog. We put hot cocoa in a thermos and went looking. I really enjoyed that.

Christmas seems to keep changing, but we spend the morning on Christmas day withmy mom, then the afternoon/evening with DH's family and with his maternal extended family.

One other day during the week we have dinner with his paternal side and exchange gifts.

Usually lots of games played at both of those gatherings.

We used to go to my step-grandmother's on Christmas Eve, but since my step-aunt and cousins moved in with grandma, the house is way too crowded for all the people there. We skipped it the last couple of years.

Sometimes we go to my best friend from growing up's parents' house on Christmas Eve before they do their family Christmas.

DH and I exchange gifts whenever. Last year we managed to do it Christmas morning. Other years we had to be at my mom's really early in the morning and we've done it the day before. One year we exchanged in TX before we left for Iowa because there just wasn't enough room left in the car for all of our stuff.

Every Christmas Eve, I prepare Oven French Toast with nut topping. It takes about 20 minutes, but then you refrigerate it overnight. On Christmas morning, I am the first up, pop it in the oven and the house smells wonderful!
We also stay home Christmas morning, there's just something so cozy about knowing that your family has nothing to do all day but spend time together!

Oven French Toast recipe:
12 oz loaf of French bread, cut into 1 inch slices
8 large eggs
2 cups milk
2 cups half and half
2 tsp vanilla
1/2 tsp nutmeg
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp cloves

topping:
3/4 cup butter, softened
1 1/3 cup brown sugar (I use less)
3 T dark corn syrup
1 1/3 c coarsely chopped pecans or walnuts

Heavily butter 13x9 baking pan. Fill pan with bread slices and set aside. I squeeze them in one layer, overlapping a little. In blender, mix eggs, milk, half and half, vanilla, nutmeg, cinnamon and cloves. Pour mixture over bread slices and refrigerate, covered, overnight.
Make topping by combining ingredients, set aside until time to bake toast. (I do this the night before and refrigerate separately).
Preheat oven to 350 degrees and spread topping over bread. Bake for 50 minutes until puffed and golden. Shield top with foil if top browns too quickly.

Obviously it's a once a year indulgence!

Oh my, I think we have many traditions...it all starts with Thanksgiving weekend. The Shriner's circus is in town(we support the Shriners for all of the good they do for kids health) and there is also a Lights festival(where you drive through an area and that money goes to Easter Seals) the kids always help decorate the yard with DH. We only do one Santa present per kid and it doesn't get wrapped. Our entire neighborhood does luminaries on Christmas Eve, and we also go to Christmas Eve service at church. Before bed DH reads Twas the Night Before Christmas in the big chair with the kids sitting in his lap. We have others like the kids baking cookies, a toy per kid for charity and so on.

We are a new family with a new house so we don't have any traditions yet. Except maybe that we are going to slow the kids down a bit. With all four of them grabbing and unwrapping gifts like the basement sale at Filene's, it was all over in twenty minutes and no one saw what anyone else got. So instead of a mad grab and rip, this year it will be a leisurely pace.

Which I am sure will drive the kiddies nuts, but then the holiday will last longer for them. :goodvibes

I do have one tradition that I always do all by myself.

I make a manger out of hay in the stable. Cause, hey...you never know. ;)
