How about a gift card to a good local restaurant along with a note saying you wish you could be there to take them out for supper?
My aunt always sends us a book from a local author...usually autographed with a personal note from her inside. I always keep the note with the book so I can look back and enjoy the funny or interesting thing she told me about why she got it for me.
24-yo women are usually new to being out on their own...cooking tools or cookbooks might be welcome in that circumstance...or a monogrammed towel even might be good.
17-yo guys are probably planning on heading off to college soon and need all sorts of things--sheets, towels, laundry bags (again, monogrammed is always cool)
Don't ask me what to get a man in his mid-40's. My husband puzzles me. Usually, he says "nothing says lovin' like a tool"...
Grandma and Grandpa would probably appreciate something you've made by hand...or something to make their lives more comfortable.
