Christmas Nostalgia Thread

This thread is great!
i remember the budweiser commercials..and the one that they still show now and then from the 80's , i think it was for folgers or maxwell house..their college age/adult son comes home unexpectedly and everyone is all excited..i think it was " Jimmy's home!!!" something like that ;)

Actually, his name was Peter. And, the fact that I remember that is quite frightening!:rotfl2:

Oh I miss the WISH BOOK! We'd even keep it after Christmas and keep on wishing!

I have a few of those Christmas elves from my mom. I put "Mrs. Fruitcake head lady" on my tree every year, despite the fact my kids think she is ugly! I used to hate her, too, but now I love her!

Orange in the bottom of the stocking, chocolate covered peppermint patties, life savers book, and fuzzy wuzzy soap (anyone?) along with avon lip balm and a new bath product.

Midnight mass with so many relatives I still have no idea who they all where. I think we filled four rows, and this was a HUGE church!

Driving home from Grandma and Grandpas, looking for Rudolph through my dad's moonroof. Not even thinking about telling my parents the brother was bothering me and hogging the armrest because you couldn't be too careful that close to Santa's visit.

Hearing "Snoopy's Christmas" on the radio:
"The news came out in the first World War, the bloody Red Baron was fighting once more!..."

Shooting barbies off my brother's airforce carrier.
*I have no idea why that memory just popped into my head*
Finding a half eaten carrot in the backyard snow. Reindeer never ate the entire carrot!

Cinnamon rolls and my mom's breakfast casserole. Frequently we'd do church again, even though we'd just gone at Midnight!

Does anyone else remember making angels by folding pages of reader's digenst magazines and then spraypainting them gold or silver?

I remember them! We made them in brownies one year. I found this picture, its similar but we used different heads.

I also remember my sister getting Christmas Craft packages in the mail every month....then at Christmas she have all these handmade decorations. She only let me help when it came to pushing 100's of pins into styrofoam balls... my thumb STILL HURTS from that!

We made those one year too! Ouch ouch ouch!

The little Santa Houses set up outside of stores. You go in them, sit on Santa's lap, tell him what you want for Christmas and he gives you a candy cane:santa:

Jingle Jells-we got these almost every year in our stockings. They were red and green bell shaped jelly candies dusted with sugar. They were supposed to have a mint flavor, but they tasted like medicine. Bleh.

We can buy them here, but they are called something else and are fruit flavored. I don't like them, but they are nice to look at. LOL

The Rankin-Bass Christmas specials!

I loved these things:

My Grandma stopped putting up her tree a few years ago and gifted them to me. I won't put them out until the boys are a wee bit older. The ones she gave me are from the early 70s, so I don't know what could be released if they break. I just remember sitting on the carpet staring at the tree, hypnotized.

I love those lights. My grandmother still has some.

In Memphis, we always went to the downtown Goldsmiths that had a tunnel under the road from the parking lot to the store. They always had a winter wonderland.

I miss the "I'd like to teach the world to sing in perfect harmony. I'd like to give the world a coke....."

I did like the razor and Budweiser commercials also.

It's our family's favorite -- we have it on DVD. "It's wassail, I know it's wassail."

I started to watch it, and my kids ran in here and stood by my chair for the entire thing. That's a classic. 21 years old and can still entertain a family.:goodvibes

I will have to order it from Amazon!

Great thread - it really brings back a lot of memories.

We had a cardboard chimney that my dad assembled every year. I assume that's how Santa made his grand entrance!

Every Christmas morning my dad made pancakes for breakfast, which was a real treat.

I remember the year my mom & uncle started giving each other gag gifts, a tradition that still continues almost 30 years later. The first year she got him a pet fart, and my great grandfather laughed so hard he cried. It's the only time I remember him laughing.

My grandparents would get there every morning at the crack of dawn to see us get into our stockings. Then my grandma & mom would fix a huge Christmas dinner with all the trimmings & would get out the fine china & good silverware. For us kids it seems like it took forever to clean up after the meal so we could get to the main event - the presents.

My brothers & I would always get a sandwich baggie filled with about 100 pennies each from our great aunt. We thought that was great!

And back in the day, in Ohio, we always had snow for Christmas...lots of it!

Great thread everyone! :goodvibes I remember a lot of the same stuff as a lot of people here. I love Christmas tradition. I can't wait now for DD's first Christmas! :lovestruc

My DGM always had the same star on her tree that had a spinning colored thing in it, it threw light around the room, and I called it the 'Disco Star". It was a little gawdy but, I loved that star. She ended up giving it to me. Sadly, it didn't make the move across the country. Last year I decided to look on Ebay and I found one new! Much to DH's dismay. It's traditon for me to have that spinning star. My DH says it's tacky :rolleyes1 .

Whenever I pull out my stocking that I had since I was a kid, I always think of "Fuzzy Wuzzy Was A Bear" soap! :confused3 Any one remember that?

Fuzzy wuzzy was a bear........
Fuzzy wuzzy had no hair...............:rotfl:

I noticed my stocking still smells like my childhood.

And my mom always made dates stuffed with peanut butter and loads of homemade cookies. She also allowed us to open one gift - just one, always from out of state relatives - on Christmas Eve to 'take the edge off'. Well, that's what I told her we needed to do to behave in Midnight Mass. ;)

And LMAO at the Oak Ridge Boys Christmas Album :lmao: What a blast from the past.

Since I lived in the Cleveland area, it was going to see Santa at the Halle building......... just like in Christmas Story!

I loved going to downtown Cleveland to Christmas shop when I was growing up! The decorated department store windows were so nice. Sadly, they are long gone. My mom always took me to lunch at the Silver Grille in Higbee's.

Do you remember the gigantic Sterling Linder Davis tree? And the wonderful aroma from Morrow's Nut House? Oh, and can't forget Mr. Jingeling! What great memories!

Well, at least two of us remember! I should have known you would, since I gave my brother a gag gift of animal singing "mahnahmahnah" last Christmas!

Somehow I must of I must have missed your post!

I'm glad someone else remembered. Do tell where you got your 'manamahnah'!
My mother bought me a monster from CVS a few years ago from CVS for Valentine's Day that sings & dances 'manahmahnah'. She has home movies of my sis and me with our Kermit and Miss Piggy puppets we got on Christmas Day many moons ago. We were doing a 'skit' with them - it was 'manahmahnah'. :rotfl2:

In the NY tri-state Christmas was not complete without the Yule Log!
I remember we used to make fun of our parents for just watching wood burn. :rotfl:

In the early days of NJ cable, one local cable station broadcast nothing but a yule log burning and Christmas carols. In the absence of a real fireplace, my parents turned it on that station! It didn't seem hokey at the time.....:rotfl:

They still have it on one of the cable channels.
