We're going to be at OKW for a few nights over the holidays. Is there an outside plug on the balcony so that we can string lights? Or do we have to run an extension cord into the living area? Thanks!

OKW balconies do have an electrical outlet right on the balcony.

Enjoy! :)

So glad to hear you're going to dcecorate your balcony. Old Key West looks soooo pretty with lots of balconies decorated with lights. Really makes it look like home.

I belive OKW may be the only resort with those outlets and therefore the only resort where one could "legally" decorate.

Anyone know the official or unofficial rule?

I'd prefer to not have decorating by guests but I'm sure that is an unpopular statement and some would say I'm a scrooge. We've already heard of suggestions of using masking tape and other cobbed versions of affixing decorations at the resorts.

WDW does a fine job of decorating, lets leave it to the pros. We also don't need fire hazards.

Merry Chritmas all and no I'm not a scrooge. In fact I love Christmas.

Glad to hear about the outlet on the porch.

We're leaving for OKW in 8 days :woohoo: and we have some christmas lights packed to decorate our balcony. But I'm not going to use anything to that will damage the railing or anything. I'll probably use fishing line or something similar to secure the lights.

I asked that very question before we left a couple weeks ago, and was told it was okay at OKW, but for sure NOT okay at BWV, BCV, or VWL. Not sure why, but maybe they do NOT have outdoor outlets??? Anyway, I again put our lights up, but because we were in 5523, most of them were hidden behind the bamboo, although they could easily be seen from the boat to DTD. We left them on the whole time we were there.

"Officially", the POS does state that nothing is to be hung or displayed on the balcony or it the windows, but I have seen light displays on the balconies at all WDW DVC resorts. There were a number at OKW last week and we saw several at BWV on balconies overlooking the BW - even the GV directly above the Screen Door.

I personally like to see the balcony lights, but I don't like seeing towels, bathing suits and assorted other laundry hanging from the railings. I guess you can't have it both ways - it's either tolerated or not by the resort. :confused3

I have my lights packed and ready to be shipped...I will be using fishing line so not to harm the property...I cannot wait!

We go almost every year the week before Christmas to our home resort, OKW. I squeeze all kinds of little decorations...including the lights, into the car each time we go. We bring a little 4' fiber optic tree and usually find that hanging about 15-20 feet of clear icickle lights around a 2-bedroom balcony is just perfect. We like walking around the diffferent areas of the resort to see how everyone else has decorated. 10 years ago there were few, but now. it seems like just about everyone does it.

I used string to attach so I wouldn't damage the railing.

I totally agree with this statement. I bought DVC because I know Disney will keep certain apperance standards in place to keep the resorts looking great. I think we should leave it to Disney to decorate the resorts using the high quality decorations that they provide. I have seen Christmas displays around my town that look nice, and others that look awful. Something that I might like could look bad to others. I just think that we should leave it to Disney to decorate.

Spirit of Christmas Present: So! Is your heart still unmoved towards us, then?
Ebenezer: I'm too old and beyond hope! Go and redeem some younger, more promising creature, and leave me to keep Christmas in my own way!
Spirit of Christmas Present: Mortal! We Spirits of Christmas do not live only one day of our year. We live the whole three-hundred and sixty-five. So is it true of the Child born in Bethlehem. He does not live in men's hearts one day of the year, but in all days of the year. You have chosen not to seek Him in your heart. Therefore, you will come with me and seek Him in the hearts of men of good will.

That was one of the ones we enjoyed last week! Thanks for sharing! :)

I would suggest quick release plastic bundling ties, available at Home Depot, Wal-Mart, Lowes, etc. You can even use one to bundle your lights. They are easy to remove, reusuable and you can get them in white or clear. You will find them in the electrical department

I never thought of that! Thanks! I was going to use fishing line...but your idea is easier!!!

We've really enjoyed the lights at the resort, with the exception of the one's that our neighbors have out. They are the kind that flash in between different colors, then they cycle between different colors, then they start all over again. It was lovely and we were enjoying them until we went to bed… then they kept going.

I feel so bad, but I left a note on their door to ask them to turn off the flashing around 11pm :guilty:

DVC asked members not to decorate the outside of the villa a few years ago. Or to have any decorations that show on the outside of the villa. You might want to notify the resort manager.

Passing a power cord through the patio/balcony door may keep your HVAC unit from operating. The doors have switches that shut down the HVAC when the door is open.
