I am totally stumped on what to get my daughter for Christmas this year.
She is 20, doesn't have any hobbies. She bought a laptop for school. She will probably live with us another 2 years, til she is done school. She is good on clothes. She doesn't wear a lot of jewelry. I thought about a cedar chest, but no room in her room.

Spa gift certificate, certificates for a mani/pedi, Netflix membership, concert tickets, an emergency kit for her car, an e reader, a new purse and wallet, some fuzzy slippers for the winter, a nice new laptop bag (vera Bradley maybe?)

we got DD 22, black diamond stud earrings last year. She wears them constantly. We lucked out when GMA was offering discounts thru a link to their show. Got them from ICE.com for under $70 and they are awesome! I wish there was $ in the budget to have gotten a pair for myself. She also LOVES her Wii....yes, at 22. How about certain kitchen things that are her own? Like a ramen bowl, mixer etc? My DD follows a gluten free diet so she makes a lot of her own food and she likes having kitchenware of her own, not expensive stuff, but her stuff. I made a pillow case for a body pillow when she was 20. DD loves skulls and Sugar Skulls and the material was perfect so covered her pillow. She still has it and uses it too. A cozy blanket? How about anything to do with spring break coming? Like a Southwest gft card? I agree on Concert tickets, those are a fortune! Camera? My DD also loves her bike..her BF got it for her , not us, but she rides it all the time especially with gas prices what they are.:faint:

Our DD is almost 19. Some of the things we are considering or have purchased in the past year:

1. GC for the college bookstore
2. Kindle
3. DD likes 2 specific television series - so she will get 1 or the other (maybe both
4. DD LOVES spa treatments (massages, mani/pedi)
5. GC for places to eat near her campus
6. At the end of high school - we purchased DD a couple of nice "business" types of outfits. DD - was really resistant to this - but she has now agreed that when she has needed something "professional-looking" she has a couple of mix and match pieces.
7. A comfy pair of lounge pants
8. UGGs
9. Gas GC's
10. itunes
11. We get DD a nice Christmas ornament every year (so that when she leaves the house - she will already have a great collection of ornaments)
12. I would LOVE to start a Roth IRA for DD. Just don't feel like we have the money for that.
13. DD will most likely need "another" type of calculator next year.
14. And - for stocking stuffers - we always get DD Breast Cancer Awareness office products. We've done this for years, and will most likely continue this.
15. I would love to get DD a nice hoodie for the sorority she joined.

I'll be watching every one else's ideas for this thread!

What she said!!:thumbsup2

How about thing she'll need once she's on her own (not as her total gift, but part of it for every b-day and Christmas) -- kitchen stuff, TV, DVD player, dishes, a chair if you have room to store it.

And a 20-year-old girl can never be "good" on clothes. ;)

For a practical girl
GCs to favorite stores
gas cards
movie tickets
Fast food GCs
itunes or bookstore GCs

For fun or unexpected
designer purse
favorite perfume
designer clothes and shoes
flat screen TV
blu ray player and a bunch of movies (I'd get a bunch of John Hughes movies)

late 20s here but as i got older these are the things my mother started getting and i liked.

gadgets (ipod, netbook, tv, kindle) i am like an old lady, i feel no need to upgrade anything but my mother is kind enough to bring me into this century

giftcards - when i was younger for clothing stores, movies, itunes... now restaurants, target, sephora, whole foods.... i didnt drive then but maybe a gas giftcard?

a few nice or more expensive clothing items. coach, LV, nice designer shoes, new coat, even just new sneakers.....not me but a lot of young ladies want uggs, vera bradley, dooney and burke, michael kors, burberry, gucci etc (ok maybe not budget but if you are only buying one piece)

she would also treat me to manis/pedis, haircuts, etc so giftcards for those

stocking stuffers were usually candy and things like razors, lotion, shower gel, maybe a cd

All great ideas! My DD's are close in age and all of these things I have considered or purchased for them. The Roth IRA's are a FABULOUS idea. Younger DD will have one started for her this year and the older has had hers for 4 years now. Never too young to learn about compound interest!

I used to get them DVD series but I switched to Netflix and Hulu subscriptions. Less to cart and more to consume!

I have to admit I'm super boring for my birthday in July I got my gym balance paid, clothes and jewelry. My Christmas list so far looks like this:

1) New leather boots

At 23 most of the things I own and use now I pick out myself. While I might enjoy a few trendy pieces like smoking slippers you wouldn't catch me dead carrying a vera bradley bag and I would assume your daughter has the same views about other things. The person who suggested work/business wear had a great idea. If I was you I would take her shopping and let her pick out a few work pieces she would like for Christmas, then watch to see if she likes anything else anywhere else in the mall or wherever you go, keep it in the back of your head or write it down and go back another day to purchase it. Yes, it might take some of the surprise out of it but it gives you a chance to spend a day together just the two of you! Make it special and treat her to lunch or get manicures together.

Also if she goes away to school food is a GREAT gift. For presents to my friends who went away I would pack canvas bags filled with food everything from boxes of chocolates to microwave able pasta then I would tie it with a big flowy scarf. No matter how much food you send her away with it will never be enough. Gift cards to grocery stores or restaurants by where she lives are great.

Also pick up things she uses everyday. Every year my dad fills my stocking with things like my favorite toothpaste, facewash, hair ties, bandaids and other things like that. I don't have to buy it later on, I use it and its a gift!

It's been said we should buy people experiences, not really gifts. Along that line, it would be concert tickets or a trip! Anything with lasting memories if she doesn't need practical things.

I bought one of these for myself after reading a thread on this board. I love mine and was raving about it to my sister. She went out and bought one as well.

I have a DD and DSD that are both 20. Since they have all the electronics they could possibly need we've had to come up with other ideas.

  • Nice handbag - not necessarily an expensive classic leather one as their tastes are still changing a bit, but something "designer-ish" as one DD would say
  • Jewelry - classic gold hoops, pearl pendant, small diamond studs etc
  • Wallet
  • Bath sets, spa gift certificates - anything related to pampering
  • Clothes & shoes - Last year we gave each girl a little black dress, which they then wore to a New Year's Eve party. They were happy that they didn't have to spring for new outfits!
  • Concert tickets

Hope this helps

I asked my DD what she would like, and she again, mentioned the black diamonds, said those are one of her most favorite gifts, ever, hands down as they match so many clothes and she gets compliments on them all the time. The key is the amount of facets on them...for more sparkle. Next? She said a gas card would be awesome to receive a/o a Target card because both grocery and merchandise there. She also mentioned a Best Buy card because she is always needing something electronic whether it be a new mouse, router...anything (plus, like I said ,mine likes Wii games) She also mentioned DSW for shoes or boots since they are still very popular~ and Home Goods for kitchen stuff. My DD said it's cool to be able to get "grown up kitchen stuff" there for affordable prices.
Also AAA membership if she drives a lot, and can use that for hotel discounts too.
My son asked for Verizon gift cards a few years back...he was saving for a smart phone and also wanted to have enough saved to basically pre-pay the first year of the conract. Between gift cards and his savings he was able to do so and loves his phone..just a thought as it would help even toward a monthly payment.

My Dd wil be 20 in March. She wants Uggs, a printer with air-print so she can print from her iphone and some odds and ends stuff.

I still need ideas, so what I am going to do is go onto her Pinterest boards. She has a "fashion" board of outfits she has pinned so I am going to go through them and pick one of her pins and buy the outfit or at least as close to it as I can find. Her pins usually have an outfit plus the shoes and accesories. So I'll do a whole "set".

She mentioned a bag from 31 today. I wish she had time to read more, but with a full college schedule there is no time.
