Christmas Gift for MIL

My MIL went crazy last year for the Gel Pro Mat for under her feet at the sink. It really eases the pain in her knees while washing dishes. She has been dragging it over to the stove while cooking, so this year she's getting a second one for over there

Now I got the expensive one, but I saw a cheaper one for 24.99....don't know how good it is in person.

I think a necessities basket makes a great gift for an older senior citizen, since my MIL is only in her early 60's I do this for our grandmothers.
Get a nice basket, or even a storage tote and fill it with stuff like dish detergent, diswasher detergent, dish towels, hand soap, bathroom towels, cleaning products, etc. Or do a gourmet food basket or baking basket with ingredients and kitchen gadgets, oven mitts, kitchen linens, etc. I usually buy more expensive items that they would never spend the money on that way even though its something very practical its still a treat. Another good one, that was very appreciated, was one with stamps, box of all occasion cards, stationary, enevelopes, pens.

Can you get all of her children together and pay for plowing her dirveway or cutting her grass ro something like that, if she lives in her own home? We do that for my DH's aunt who lives alone in her own home. She loves it!

I was thinking that or a cleaning service. A bunch of us chipped in and we did that for my grandmother one year.

I've also done Omaha steaks for my grandfather and he LOVED it!

When my dad got frail he liked that white tray table they're everywhere now- he liked the remote light switch(cvs has them I think)-think of a clapper- only a light switch.

The table was able to hold all the things he needed right near him and easy to slide.-his tissues, snacks, glasses, his remote, cell phone.
light down blankets from QVC- Northern nights-warm and fluffy light.

Don't laugh- the Amish heater- he was always so cold- it could be wheeled from room to room, cool to the touch-not expensive to operate.
Light glasses for drinking-

Thanks for some great ideas! The cleaning service would be a gift for us! lol I talked to DH and we may get her a rolling walker. She just got a new one in the past six months, so Medicare won't pay for a new one. She was quite weak when she got her new one and we were afraid she didn't have the strength to operate the hand breaks. Since then, she has decided to start walking (with DH's supervision) and is walking a half a mile a day. (Huge accomplishment for her!) Anyone know the best prices on Pediatric rolling walkers? I say pediatric because she is only 4'10".

These are SOOOO nice. I have 2 in my kitchen. I wouldn't recommend them to anyone with trouble walking because they are 'elevated' and someone that can't lift their feet up high could easily trip on them, but I LOVE mine!!!!

We have lots of 'older' relatives in our family and for the most part they don't want more stuff.
Food hampers are usually well received and we try to include some of their fav foods, nuts, jellies etc. and some nice christmas treats.

Good Luck.

Yeah, I was about to say they same thing. My 76yo mother would rather have food gifts than just about anything else.I start canning my delicious vegetable beef soup and applesauce in the fall and I give her about 12 jars, enough to last at least 1/2 the year. MOm is a big hoarder, so I don't like to give her more "stuff". I do give her GCs--to the dog groomer and the vet! :thumbsup2 My 90yo MIL lives in a nursing home and she doesn't have much personal space. We give her snacks, like crackers, cans of fruit, small candies. I have made her a couple aprons that cover from shoulders to hips, so she can keep her clothes clean when she eats(don't call them bibs!) Right now I'm working on a lap quilt for her to wear when she's rolling around in her wheelchair.

I asked my MIL what her favorite ever scent was and found out it was Emeraude.

She also liked throws and angels, so I bought those things every year, but the Emeraude was a huge hit - she'd worn it for a very long time and liked it. I would get perfume one year, dusting powder the next and lotion the year after that. It got harder and harder to find that dusting powder though. . .

So I would ask what her favorite scent is and see what you can turn up on the internet if it's no longer made.

My Grandmother is the same way. The one thing I did for her a couple of years ago was got her a card assortment and stamps and put them in a nice organizer. That way she had cards for every occasion and stamps to go along with them. She loved them and still talks about it.

I bought a rolling walker at Kroger's pharmacy a few months ago. It was about $100.00, and is very nice. The handles adjust quite a bit, so maybe you wouldn't need a pediatric one for your mom.

I usually get my MIL 2 $50 gift certificates to her favorite hair salon and she loves them because she can splurge and not feel bad because it's not out of household money

How about a digital frame, loaded with family pictures. You can also scan in old photos. We've done that and I love to see those pictures, at least once a day. It brings back good memories.

I love it and find that I'm looking at pictures much more than looking at albums.

My mom is 74 she reads a lot and loves her amazon kindle... you can adjust the text size so it is large print.

The other thing she always uses are gift certificates for her hairdresser and gift certificates to the nail salon.

maybe a digital picture frame you can pre-load it with family pictures.
