We do a big Christmas Eve dinner wth family and friends. I themed it Italian last year with lasagne and tiramisu and various side dishes. I want to do something different but without breaking the bank. Thought I would come to my Dis friends for ideas. Help?!:goodvibes

My family does a potluck for Christmas Eve Dinner. Everyone brings a dish but it does tend to be the same things every year . One of the things that always goes over really well is Near East Rice Pilaf (just a couple of boxes of rice cooked to directions - easy and inexpensive and very tasty). We also do Chicken Drumsticks cooked in Ginger Teriyaki sauce as well as sweet and sour meatballs, ham, baked beans, a salad, rolls, etc.

I suppose I must be very untraditional...we typically order pizza on Christmas Eve. :rotfl2: We save the big dinner for Christmas day.

We doing pizza, hot wings and bread sticks this year.

Last year I did sandwich platter, fruit and veggie platter.

We always have a standing rib roast with mashed potatoes and yorkshire pudding. I usually buy the rib roast in November when they have them on sale and freeze it until Dec

How about a Mexican buffet? Tacos, burritos, chips, cheese dip. Look for the B1G1 sales for taco kits....get ground beef on sale....I think you could do it pretty inexpensively.

We do heavy appetizers for Christmas Eve including shrimp cocktail, pigs in blankets, etc. At midnight we put out lox and bagels, baked salmon, tuna fish and egg salad.

We fondue and nosh on all the favorite stuff we dont get very often. I throw in a brie wheel, the fondue, chocolate fountain, champagne, kids get to drink out of fancy cups, its crazy heaven!

Way back, we used to do the Italian traditional fish dinner, but found it was too much work with evening mass. So now we eat after church and always have a BIG Italian antipasto consisting of Genoa Salami, Capricola, Pepperoni, Provolone Cheese, Ham, Prosciutto, Turkey, Roasted Red Peppers, Hard Boiled Eggs, Asparagus, Black Olives, (I think that's everything), along with a couple of crusty loafs of Italian Bread.

I make linguini w/shrimp, crabmeat and broccoli. I serve it with garlic bread and a salad. It's an easy way to do fish for Christmas eve.

My family along with my parents go to the 4:00 mass, come home and order Chinese food! It's simple, no stress, and we get to enjoy each other's company. The table's set before we leave for church, so don't have to do anything there, and the clean ups a breeze!

Golly, I wish that someone would come up with a "non-traditional" dinner for us on Christmas Eve!!! We got to DH's uncles house and we always have ham & turkey or ham & roast beef and all the fixings that we have at every other holiday meal, including Christmas the next day. I would love a mexican buffet or italian buffet!!! My brother and his family always go out for Chinese food on Christmas day...kind of like A Christmas Story...:lmao:

Christmas eve, we host an open house for any family and friends that want to stop by.
Some come before church, some after church, and some come just to have an excuse to not have to go to their own family gatherings. :rotfl:

I set up a buffet line in my kitchen. Anything that is hot gets thrown into crockpots or nesco roasters, anything that is needs to be kept cold is put into a container that fits into a round cooler so it can be surrounded by ice and kept cold. (you do not want to know how many crockpots, nesco roasters, and coolers I have)

This year I am doing
BBQ, Hot dogs, Baked Beans, Macaroni Salad, Potato Salad, Taco Dip, Chips, Pretzels, Chocolate and Peanut butter Fudge, pumpkin roll, soups - vegetable beef, chicken corn, chili, and ham & bean, devilled eggs, veggie tray, layered jello, and cheese and bologna tray.

I make the same dinner every year. Ham glazed with brown sugar and crushed pinapples. I buy the canned corn, buscuits, green salad. My sis makes mash potatos and brings some tamales, My other sis brings spinch dip. I usually bake lots of goodies candy, cookies, cheese cake etc but its to much work so last year I finally asked others to bring something. I had my other sis bring 2 -2liter sodas, my nephew(24) 2 -2liters, my two nieces a dessert each. It worked out so much easier and easy on the pocket book. I've thought about doing a different theme but everyone looks forward to the ham.

We also did cheese fondue last year and have decided it's our new tradition. Cheese and chocolate fondue and some good wine. It's easy but feels very festive.

That's what we do as well, there's just too much going on that day to have a big dinner. I think this year I'm going to make crab dip, corn and black bean salsa, and maybe some soup.

We do fondue every year with the family. We can have anywhere from 9 to 15 I start with the cheese fondue and then we go to the meet fondue, lots of wine and it's just a great family time around the table.
