Christmas Decorations

We (as in my daughter and I) put up the tree in the living room and a few decorations on some windows and shelves around the house.

My husband has put up lights outside from time to surprise me, not much, but I know what he's done was a royal pain for him. Since I know he hates Christmas and only goes along with all of it for us, I told him it's ok to skip outside decorations.

He lives by a motto: anything for his girls.

We decorate around the fireplace and put up a large tree, but don’t do anything else as far as decorating. Our house probably looks like a Scrooge house, because the tree is only visible from the back side of the house, so it looks like there are no decorations at all from the front.

Most of the decorating is done in the family room — the mantel and hearth, flanking bookcases, and a couple other surfaces. That’s also where we have our main tree. The kitchen has two full-sized trees and a countertop tree, plus I hang paper snowflakes from the ceiling. Outside of that, the decorations are limited to just the themed trees, 1-2 in each room on the main level. Very little upstairs — one tree in our bedroom and my sons each have a mini tree in their rooms. The only thing on the terrace level is a pencil tree in my husband’s office.

Outside is fairly simple. We have lights on some of the bushes and Christmas-colored uplighting on the house. It’s an easy way to make a big impact and it looks like more than it is.

Sorry @ronandannette, I miscounted. It’s actually six-freaking-teen trees. :teeth:

We used to go all out but not anymore. I hang a wreath on the door and have a small tree I decorate with 'nerdy' things (video game characters, Star Trek, Tardis, etc.).

All out.

My fireplace/mantle/bookshelves take up one wall of the living room and it gets decorated.

Full size trees go up in the living room, formal dining room, kitchen, and sunroom.

We really don’t do a lot outside (some lights around the door, wreaths on the door & shutters, garland around the mailbox, & a lighted Christmas flamingo), but do decorate a lot inside the house - we have at least a little Christmas in every room & A LOT of Christmas in our foyer, living room, dining room, family room, kitchen, & main bathroom.

I kinda have a Santa & reindeer theme in the family room, so the fireplace mantel in the family room is Santa-themed.

We have 2 big decorated trees (one in the living room & one in the family room), a tall, slim decorated tree in the kitchen, & a small decorated tree in the foyer. (And the dining room is open to the living room, so the living room tree can be seen from the dining room.)

Each bedroom also has a tree. The kids decorate theirs, but, as a gift to myself, the tree in our bedroom is just lights & no ornaments.

Not much outside, a wreath at the door, a Christmas door mat and a few small garden flag.
Inside we do put up an artificial tree in the family room. In the front room either a real tree or on a table a small ceramic tree that belonged to my Grandparents.
I change the dish towels & those in the downstairs bathroom to Christmas. There are some other decorations including artificial pine garland on the stair banister & some Poinsettias .
I have been a less is more decorator and a lot of what I put up has been given to us by family. Either new or handed down. The one other major item is the Epcot 🚝 around the artificial tree.

I decorate but think it’s reasonable (not over the top). We do 3 trees (big tree on main floor, skinny tree in basement where we often watch TV/movies at night, small tree in my daughter’s bedroom - she’s looking to upgrade to a bigger tree this year though 😆); glass trees with lights on shelves, village, garlands. Lights on bushes and trees outside and lit wreaths on windows and doors.

Maybe this should be its own thread, but WHEN do people decorate?? (I’m taking down my fall decor tonight in prep for pulling out my Christmas stuff tomorrow!)

We have a 2 ft lighted tree that is up all year in living room. A four ft tree in dining/puzzle room all year, just because DH likes to see it.

Big tree in family room, garland/lights along mantle with 12 stockings. Under tree we have an 42 year old rubber/plastic manger. I wanted a set that our toddler could handle. Who knew it would last so long. Depending on gifts, sometimes baby Jesus end up in doll house or Joseph is driving a Jeep. Outside, lights on bushes and around porch.

Then there are the grandkids decorating.

White kitchen cabinets , fridge and dishwasher get covered with those window cling things. Windows get those gummy gel things on them. Hallway has the flat tree. I put up command strips and then zigzag garland and twinkle lights. Kids hang up anything non-breakable. Hang garland in doorways and kids add whatever. Paper clips make great hangers. Items don’t fall off

We decorate one tree in the living room and hang a wreath on the front door. We also have multi-colored icicle lights around 3 sides of the front porch but we leave those up all year- I love the soft colored lighting- so they don't really count as Christmas decorations. I have enough trouble keeping up with all the everyday clutter and confusion; the last thing I need to do is add to it at the busiest time of the year!

Inside I decorate all the main living spaces. But, it's not as over the top as the videos I see on line. lol. Normally it's one tree and changing out some wall art for Christmas/winter options, bits and bobs on shelves/tables, winterizing my dining room table centerpieces, etc.
I did add a 1970s silver tree this year and can't wait to see how it looks with the color wheel. :) So, there will be two trees this year.
We usually do a little decorating outside, but nothing over the top. My personal favorite "outside" decor are my candles in the windows. I finally upgraded to battery operated with a timer; so, I don't have cords hanging to outlets everywhere, they come on at sunset, and stay on for 6 hours, so once I set them up I don't have to do anything but enjoy.
We have a 1900s farmhouse and it's just classic Christmas. I'd love to add a wreath on every window, but haven't gotten around to that yet.

All we do on the outside is put wreaths on the front and side doors. You can't see the house from the street so it feels pointless. Inside though is a different story. We decorate the dining room, library, family room, and our built-in buffet. We put our LEGO Christmas village on the dining table. The library is decorated formally with gold, white, dark purple, and teal decorations. We put our 7-foot dark purple tree in the library. It's decorated with clear lights, gold ornaments from our travels, and a gold collar instead of a tree skirt. In our great room we decorate the hutch with my Christmas china. The stockings knitted by my sister hang from our family room mantle along with a garland made of photos from Christmases past. We switch out our family photo above the mantle for one taken several years ago on Christmas Day. We decorate the built-in shelves with Christmas decorations I inherited from my parents and things I've collected from my travels. The back staircase banister is decorated with previous family stockings hung from red ribbons. I think that's one of my favorite decorations.

Since we can see the backyard from our library and great room, I've been trying to convince my husband that we should decorate the backyard for Christmas.

I have dreams of lots of decorations but haven't done much lately unfortunately. It is definitely More outside than inside lately. I put a wreath of some sort on the door, a small decorative garden flag. I have put a magnetic cover on the mailbox past couple of years. We don't have an outside outlet so that makes outside lighting difficult. We do have a couple of those "Star shower" things that shine the lights on the house. I have a 4 foot tree that I have put up the last few years because we really don't have a lot of space for a full size tree. Plus all of our gatherings are at other family member's houses. My work schedule doesn't allow a lot of time to decorate.

We put up 2 trees inside. A real one in the living room and a fake one in our play room/other tv room. I have a ton of Christmas decorations! I put lights outside on the small trees and bushes, and some years my husband will put light on the roofline. We live at the end of a long road on a cul de sac, so not many people drive by. We moved about 3 years ago and out last house had much more traffic go by, so it was a little more worth it. So pretty when all the lights are up though.

We put up all our outside decorations today - and I’ve picked up a couple new ones this year 🙈 lights around two larger trees; lights on the lamp post and mailbox post; wreaths with lights in all the windows, front door, and hanging from the garage lights; net lights on bushes; and spotlights in red and green shining up the front of the house. I like Christmas 😂

EVERY CORNER has a tree, a manger, lights, a red bow, gel stickies declaring Merry Christmas on bathroom mirrors, hand towels, tablecloths or a token of some kind. One would think that after all these years I would have enough decorations, but no, I discovered this last year and have one on each floor and I don't even use the fragrance:

To me Christmas is a birthday extravaganza & a celebration of life, no such thing as too much.
