Christmas Day Foods

We're hosting Boxing Day and decided to go with standing rib roast as well since most everyone will have had turkey the day before. We won't be a huge crowd so I got a 5-rib one (about 6 lbs.) and it cost almost $70 :scared1:.

Yeah, I cook a standing rib roast every year for Christmas Eve as well - we end up getting about a 10 lb. roast, so it's well over $100.

Christmas Day, we actually do turkey and stuffing. It's Thanksgiving all over again, but our family really likes turkey, so we do that for most holidays.

Since we're going to be on our own Christmas Day I though we might try going out too, for the first time ever. I'm pretty shocked to find that with the exception of the dining rooms in the landmark hotels pretty much NOTHING is open . This is in a city of 1.3 million people.

Yeah, I was really surprised at just how many people were at the Chinese restaurant when we were there last year. I think Chinese restaurants are the only ones open on Christmas Day around here.

Christmas Eve dinner: my sister is cooking
prime rib
Yorkshire pudding
mashed potatoes
some sort of vegetable
usually a really yummy dessert

Christmas breakfast:

pancakes
bacon
milk shakes

Christmas dinner:
honey brined turkey
stuffing/dressing
mashed potatoes & gravy
glazed carrots
cranberry sauce
for dessert - cookies, gluten free apple crisp (for DH's aunt who has celiac disease), lemon meringue pie

...
What are you doing for the day? I'm wanting a few easy things that doesn't have me in the kitchen all day. I'm tending toward appetizers but not ready to commit. However, I have to go to the grocery store soon so I need to make a decision...

This is what I'm thinking:

spinach artichoke pull apart dippers
buffalo chicken dip cups
veggies and dip
ham and cheese mini quiche
fruit
baked potatoes and chili (unsure of this one)

we have PLENTY of dessert so no need for anything there

Ugh ya'll making this difficult! I keep thinking just easy foods. We're going to have a dinner meal on Christmas Eve at the crazy lady's and we had two other holiday dinners last week.
Everyone's dinners sound great but after all the cooking and baking I've done lately I'm tired of my kitchen.
Hey I guess typing this all out helped me make the decision. Thanks, ya'll!

We go to MIL's for a big dinner, but this is the easy appetizer I always make at Christmas:

Spread a brick of cream cheese out on a plate. Mix cocktail sauce with a can of tiny shrimp (or crab meat) and pour over the cream cheese. Serve with crackers. (My mom always used Triskets, my aunt, Ritz. I like either.)

It was going to be just the two of us this year, but we're probably going to pack up Christmas dinner and head up the road to Waco and join Tex Jr. He has to work late on Christmas Eve, and early on Boxing Day, so there's no way he's going to drive down to Austin for a few hours. (So we'll do it instead, but we're old and crazy anyhow!) This will be his first Christmas anywhere besides our house, and he's feeling lonely with everyone out of town.

It'll be ham, sweet potatoes, peas, cranberry jelly, and pecan pie.

Smoked Turkey (from Publix) I don't really like turkey but love this. Worth every penny
Ham
Homemade noodles
sweet potatoes
fresh green beans
rolls
pecan pie
fruit
something else sweet- haven't decided yet

Forgot to buy the fruit and not going back. Ended up with Apple and Pecan pie. Oh and woke up with a wonderful head cold this morning. Drinking a lot of OJ hoping for the best.

We have to host last minute because of some health issues with other family members....
So the easiest thing I can put togehter:
salad
garlic knots
stuffed shells
Meatballs and sausage
fried cauliflower
roasted asparagus
mixed seafood in white wine/garlic broth

I'll stick some snacks out....hummus and chips, some kind of chip n dip, assorted cheeses/meats and crackers

Dessert:
picking up a pumpkin pie from Costco and everybody else can bring something!

We are doing apps tomorrow night...pigs in a blanket, buffalo chicken tenders, mozzarella sticks, spinach and artichoke dip, mac and cheese. Will just be five of us.

Christmas Day my sister and her family are coming and I am making prime rib. I honestly think its one of the easiest dinners to make. We are serving it with a choice of horseradish cream sauce and bernaise sauce. I am also serving twice baked potatoes, roasted asparagus, sauteed mushrooms, corn and crusty rolls.

Dessert is...peanut butter cup fudge, cheesecake or chocolate mousse cake.

Merry Christmas everyone!

We're having my side of the family over for Christmas- Christmas Eve is with my husband's family at his brother's house.

Everyone is bringing food:

We're providing Chicken and sausage gumbo with rice.
Home made green beans
Vegan Chocolate cake

Others are bringing:
Turkey
Rice dressing
Crawfish cornbread
Seafood lasagna
Eggplant casserole
2 salads but not sure what kind
Sweet Potato Crunch
Carrot Cake

I will be alone on Christmas Day (my son is an R.N.), but tomorrow night I am hosting my son, brother-in-law, sister-in-law and eight year old niece. We will have a few appetizers and then Honey Baked Ham, Mashed Potato Puffs, Ina Garten's Spinach Gratin, corn, chunky applesauce and rolls. Chocolate peppermint cupcakes and peppermint ice cream for dessert (and some Christmas cookies). It is a small group, so I don't go overboard.

DGD is getting married in March and she wants to learn how to make the traditional holiday dinners for he new DH and possibly his family. We're starting out with the basic Christmas dinner - turkey, mashed potatoes, dressing, green bean casserole, tomato and cucumber salad, brown-and-serve rolls, and apple pie. She plans to do all the prep and cooking with me stupidvising. We're both excused from clearing up and doing dishes. We'll have cinnamon rolls for breakfast.

Actually, I don't know why she wants to do this; her fiancé is a marvelous cook and he loves to prepare special meals for her. He even does the dishes. I keep telling her that he's a keeper. Like Rachel Ray says, there's nothing sexier than a man washing the dishes!

We're doing cinnamon buns for breakfast (a real treat given I usually skip breakfast or we stick to pure protein like eggs). Early dinner will be at the bf's father's house (just bringing a salad there, he'll be serving a ham and mashed potatoes), but the homemade apps I'll be making for us/to bring to friends' houses later include:

Honey teriyaki wings
Pepperoni flatbread
Bacon cheddar ranch dip
Bacon wrapped mini potato bites

We're going out with close family friends for Christmas eve to our local Japanese steak house. Then on Christmas day we are doing the traditional THanksgiving dinner since we didn't get to have that at Thanksgiving. I love being able to be home with my immediate family and get out my china and silver. And cloth napkins and candles too!!!

Christmas Eve I am bringing all the fixings for vegetarian tacos. Due to illness our gathering is up in the air but at least we have something to eat.

Christmas Day we are having a simple breakfast of cinnamon rolls from the can and fruit. Dinner will be pizza ordered the night before and reheated.

Second Christmas Day we are having a nice dinner of pretzel stuffing, twice baked potatoes, green bean casserole, cranberry sauce, and some kind of meat. Christmas cookies for dessert.

I did not want to go too crazy with food this year having a baby and toddler.

Looking at these lists makes me wonder how long some people spend in the kitchen! The menus look great though.

Yeah, I was really surprised at just how many people were at the Chinese restaurant when we were there last year. I think Chinese restaurants are the only ones open on Christmas Day around here.

We are going out to a Japanese Hibachi place for dinner tomorrow then out to catch a movie at night

It's just ridiculous. My MIL is Italian and their whole family just makes way too much food for every occasion. Way too much. We're hosting this year and I tried to tell DW that we need to cut back on the amount of food, but it's pointless as the MIL can't stop. We're not doing a traditional sit-down dinner, just continual tidal waves of food throughout the day. Keep in mind, it's just 6 of us tomorrow. DW and I. MIL and FIL. BIL and SIL. They'll be here at 11:00 AM... here's the plan.

Brunch on arrival: Muffins, quiche (seriously, MIL is making god-damn quiches), fried dough (see left), bacon, sausage... I don't know, all that breakfast stuff.
Then we'll need a break from eating... which means more eating: cheese and crackers, veggies and dip, pita and hummus, all kinds of snacks.
Figure I'll be ready to vomit by this point, so bring on the chili, pulled pork, pasta and pastita and meatballs and sauce, pizza, chicken wings... seriously, I'm forgetting half of the stuff that will be here. It's gross.
Don't forget 86 desserts! Pies!

My son and I are on our own again this year. We might go see a movie in the afternoon but for food, I'm not cooking so we're doing appetizers; cheese dip w/soft pretzels, chili dip, pepperoni & cheese, chips & dip.
