Christmas Breaks 2013

Kids here in Charlotte have the full 2 weeks off- they go through Friday the 20th, then start back Monday the 6th.

A majority of schools around the country should have those 2 weeks off, and the ones that have to start back on the 2nd or 3rd probably can expect quite a few kids to miss those first days. I'm sure many families won't mind letting their kids skip that day or so to stretch out their holiday vacations.

Expect WDW to stay very busy until the 5th- maybe a bit less busy after the 31st, but not a big dropoff in crowds.

I wish we had the full 2 weeks. The school committee discussed it but i guess it got shot down. We leave for Disney on the 26th but have to come home the 1st for school the next day. :(
Wish we could stay till the 5th.

We finish Friday and go back on the 2nd also. I don't know of any district near me who has until the 6th (in CT). My advice to the above poster is stay until the 5th. Nothing Earth Shattering will take place on those two days we are back. Take it from this teacher, it will take those days just to get them off Holiday mode. Go enjoy!

December 20 is our last day. The students go back to school on January 3, but DH and I go back on January 2 for a workday.

My DS's school gets out the 19th and goes back the 6th, he gets 2 weeks and a day. DD's school gets out the 20th and goes back Jan. 13th, so 3 weeks off. I myself would prefer 2 weeks at Thanksgiving or 2 weeks at Spring Break, rather than 3 at Christmas.

But nobody asked me! :rotfl2:

Just curious (and sorry if this has been posted before), when do you elementary and high school kids have off for Christmas this year? Schools already me have the full two weeks off but I'm curious if any schools go back January 2nd and 3rd for school of if schools everywhere have two weeks off.

Public school in CT

Tomorrow (Friday 19th) is the last day of class for my DD and she goes back on Thursday the 2nd. That is typical for our Christmas break, it may vary a day or two in either direction depending on what day of the week Christmas and New Years fall on.

The only schools that have a full two weeks (or more) off around here are the private schools.

Our schools have early dismissal on Friday and reopen January 2nd. By law we have to have a minimum of 180 days of instruction and be run she'd by June 30th. If winter break is longer it just means less time off elsewhere during the year.

We home school but our group classes all ended the week of the 9th-13th and do not go back till the week of the 6th-10th. We also don't start the year until the week of Labor Day (except the one that meets on Mondays and that is the following week) and we get done the week of May 12-16 for the year with a week off for Thanksgiving and a week off for Easter. The only exception is the Music and Art classes end with their concert and art show the last Thursday in April so they don't have to pay building rent for the month for using it 3 times in May.
The school district we live in has an early out day on the 20th (1:30 as opposed to 2:15 for K-2 and 3 pm for 3rd-8th. It's a K8 district only) and goes back on the 2nd. The larger district that we are supposed to feed into for high school as well as the other larger district that will take our students (actually to play middle school football students from our district have to play with that district because we don't have the enrollment for 11 man football and none of the smaller schools around us have middle school 6 man football) both have a full day on the 20th and go back the 2nd.
Some of the smaller school districts in the state have their last day on Thursday and don't go back until the 6th because they see no sense in going back for one day and than having another break. I need to mention that these districts instead of going Monday-Friday 8-3 or 8:30-3:30 regularly attend only Monday-Thursday 8:15-4:00. When you have a good portion of the student body gone when their is an away game for sports between boys basketball, girls basketball, the band, and the cheerleaders and that is just the 5th and 6th grade, 7th and 8th grade, jv, and varsity teams (if your enrollment is enough to have both jv and varsity using your top 8th grade players for jv if necessary) and does not count siblings in grades K-4. Parents are asked to schedule medical appointments that have to be done in the larger towns (which in some of the towns is everything that can not be handled by the county health nurse clinic once or if your really lucky twice a month) that are sometimes 90 minutes drive or more away on Fridays as well as on the other school break days. Going to the 4 day schedule has also cut down on transportation costs (when 80% or better of the student body is bused sometimes distances of up to 2 hours away more if you have a school that combines 2 or more previous schools due to the enrollment being below state requirements to have a school it does add up having to run the buses 5 days a week. Reports are some districts have been able to cut 45% of their operating costs since this went into effect while raising teacher and staff salaries)

with ours this Friday is a minimum day, and the kids return on Monday 1/6.

the longest public school Christmas break I'm aware of is in the district I attended as a kid. after YEARS of insanely low attendance the week following Christmas break (in a state where attendance drives funding) with the district warning parents that if attendance didn't improve they would have to take drastic measures, the district changed it's calendar such that the schools are closed for 3 FULL WEEKS (so this year they are out from 12/23-1/10). to make up for the time school starts around 8/14 (when I was a kid attending we didn't start till labor day week).

parents threw a fit, some sued-unsuccessfully.

dd has a nice break from college. quarter ended 12/6, new quarter doesn't start until 1/6:thumbsup2

Finish on the 20th - my kids school goes back on the 2nd, my school (neighboring town) goes back on the 6th

Believe me I've thought about it. I'm also a teacher, but i feel guilty bc they're missing a day a week later for my son's hockey tournament in NH, then another day after Feb. vacation when we're returning from FL again.
We've been a few times this year so it's fine. If this was my only trip then we would definitely stay til the 5th.
It's all good!!

Last day the 20th , back on Wed. the 8th. I love going back a little later because last year we went to Disneyland on that Sunday and Monday, flew back Tuesday for school Wed.

So sad we aren't doing it this year, but am planning on it next year!

Their last day is Friday and they go back on the 6th. DDs are super excited to have two full weeks off. They are looking forward to a lot of sleeping. :rotfl2:

On the other hand, I have so much to do it is making my head spin. I work Monday and Tuesday, have Wednesday off. Work Thurdsay and leave Thursday night until Monday for a hockey tournament in CT. People are staying with DD and DH while I am gone, so I need to get the house in order at some point.

I come back to a mountain of work on Tuesday, have Wednesday off, and then work Thursday and Friday. We leave on the 17th for another weekend hockey tournament.

Man, just typing that out made me tired. :faint:

My kids' last day is this Friday Dec. 20th and they go back on Thursday Jan. 2nd, except for DS4's preschool which starts back on Mon Jan. 6th.

My grandson is in Kindergarten. Today is the last day before school vacation, and it's a half-day. School resumes on January 6th.

His class is having a Polar Express party this morning. His mom is helping out and just sent me the cutest pic. The kids are all in their pajamas, sitting in chairs lined up like a train, and they're all sipping hot chocolate while the movie plays. They have some activities planned, along with cookies and other snacks, then each child will receive a special bell when they "arrive" at the North Pole. So cute!:)

Friday is last day and we go back on the 2nd. Which is fine by me with us having no plans.

Our last day is the 20th and we go back the 6th. Our school district has a policy that prohibits school weeks with fewer than 3 days. It is going to be a long break.
