christmas "angel" gift help...

Got a salvation army Christmas "angel" at DS's preschool. DS choose a 9 year old boy who wants "building toys" , like Legos. Now, what do we buy? DS just turned 5 so we are just starting with Legos, but there is so much out there. It is hard when you don't know the child's likes/dislikes, but want something that would be fun, probably one of the few presents child will get. Any ideas?

We've been doing legos since at least 2 years old. They are always a great gift. Lincoln logs and kinects (sp?) are fun too! They even have kits where you can make things like a working roller coaster!

Maybe get several smaller sets(the kind that build one thing) of legos, or try and find the biggest "starter" (the kind that don't build a specific item)box of leggos you can afford.

I would add that I would buy a rubbermaid type storage bin, put the lego boxes in it or on top of it and wrap. (if they allow you to wrap). If not tie together or be obvious that they go together. This will give the child someplace to store all the pieces so they don't get lost (in case the box rips or tears). Or go with the bucket legos/duplo so there is a container for storage. The mom will also thank you.

My 7 year old has been into Bionicles since he was 3 mainly due to his older brother. My 11 year old still likes bionicles, but they take him no time to put together. So basically in our house Bionicles rule & because they can become action figures we don't seem to get bored with them.

The Bioncles come in cylinder conatiners that are used for storage.

My son has LOVED all the K'nex things since he was about 5 (and his teenage female babysitter requested the large set for Christmas after playing with them enough at my house.)

I too would suggest K'nex over legos. Legos are so themed that it is hard to know--would he like underwater, Bionicles, Knights, Star Wars etc. AND they often come in their own storage bins which is a bonus!
