OK y'all. I need some guidance from the experts. We're brand new DVC members (Boardwalk) and our first trip is this coming June 16th-26th in a Boardwalk view studio. But DH and I were talking about returning Christmas 2016. I've never been to Disney during Christmas. Our prospective dates are Dec 23rd-31st. What are my odds of being able to book on January 23rd? And although controversial, should I entertain the notion of "walking" the reservation to ensure snagging the ressie? I realize this is a very busy timeframe, but other than that fact I am absolutely ignorant as what to expect regarding room, parks, crowd levels, and so forth. Not sure if it makes any difference but we're contemplating studio vs 1 bedroom. Can anyone give me any advice?

If you are thinking of booking a standard view studio, you may need to walk it. I tried to book for December 18th of this year at the 11 month mark, and could not get the 2 bedroom standard that I wanted. Those dates were gone right when booking opened at the 11 month mark.

OK. I have no problem to attempt to walk it. I just have some questions about it. I read the "Walking a reservation" sticky and although I found it informative, it didn't answer all of my questions. Someone posted on another thread about "Walking" that had something to do with the number of points you have limiting how you can walk. I don't fully understand this. (We have 300 points at BWV. We would like to stay at our home resort). Another question I have is when should the first day of my walking reservation be to ensure that I get to book 12-23-16 to begin walking the remaining days? (I would like our trip to be from 12-23-16 through 12-31-16). I suppose I get the theory behind the practice, I just don't fully grasp how to implement it.

The timing is difficult. Lots of people are booking for the first 2 weeks of December. There may be some runovers into the 3rd week. I would decide how much time you want to spend on this walk and if it's worth it to get the Standard view versus a pool/garden view. P/G view would be much easier to book without walking.

More points gives you a bigger range to walk. Someone with 300pts can book a full 14 days in a studio while someone with 150 points will only get a week or so. The person with 300pts would only need to call and walk the reservation on the 14th day, while the other has to call every 7 days to walk.

That helps! So if I understand you correctly, if I'm looking to book boardwalk/preferred view then I shouldn't have any issue simply booking at opening on January 23rd? No need to walk?

I can't say since I've never had to book that same period. What I can say is that I had no problems booking a 2bd standard view for the first week of December the two times we traveled during that time in the last 5 years. That's supposedly harder to book than Christmas. With that said, if it was me I would start looking a couple of days prior to the 23rd. If it's open, I would just book up thru 31st, if I had the points to spare. Then call in on the 23rd to cancel the first week. This is more peace of mind for me and less anxiety over waiting till the 23rd.

Don't borrow points to walk if you aren't going to use them for for December dates, as they will stay in the use year you borrow them to. I am assuming you are using 1/2 of your points for your June trip.

I've never tried it myself but since you're booking at your home resort it shouldn't be too much of a problem. I would just suggest watching the availability calendar for the week or two leading up to your booking date to get a sense of how busy it is. We just came back from a Dec 20-26 reservation not at our home resort and it worked out okay (we wanted a 2 bedroom, they only had a studio and a 1 bedroom but when we got there they were able to give us a lock off anyway). If it had been our home resort (the Grand) there would have been plenty of availability at the 11 month.

There is probably a very small risk that you will be blocked out from reserving Dec 23 and forward if you go on line at 8 a.m. eastern, Jan 23, and attempt to reserve. Morever, that small risk potentially applies only to studios and 2BRs in boardwalk or standard view; if you are seeking a 1BR in any view or are fine with pool/garden view there is no risk at all to waiting until Jan 23 to make your reservation. In fact, those are likely to be open even weeks beyond Jan 23.

The concept of walking is to reserve, at 11 months out, as many nights as you can starting before your arrival date and capture the night of your arrival date in the reservation by having a departure date of Dec 24, which prevents the particular room space applicable to your reservation from being reserved by others for your arrival date and beyond. You then call daily and drop one night at the beginning of the reservation and add another at the end until you have what you want, and actually you could probably just wait until Dec 23 and call and drop nights before Dec 23 and add up to six nights after Dec 23 (and then call Jan 25 and add your last two nights).

A secondary risk you can have with walking is actually finding a date to begin. For example, the ideal walk for you would begin with reserving seven nights, from Dec 17 to 24, on Jan 17. But an issue you can face is that Dec 17 itself may be gone when you attempt to reserve on Jan 17, thus preventing you from reserving anything on that date. That is why some will start walking even long before their arrival date (sometimes months before) and just keep dropping and adding nights until they reach where they want to be. Personally I think your chances ar high of getting what you want even if you just wait until Jan 23, but if you feel walking is needed I think the odds are very high that you will find at least one day to start walking between Dec 17 and 22.

As to what to expect Christmas time, you will find the entire World decorated to the hilt, with parades and stage shows given Christmas themes. As to crowds, you will find the largest that you have ever seen at WDW. One way to describe it is picture yourself standing at the base of Main Street at noon in the middle of Christmas week, looking down toward the castle. Between where you are standing and the castle, you will not see the sidewalks, you will not see the street. What you will see is a sea of bobbing heads all next to each other moving en masse, some away from you and some toward you (see, for example, photo here: http://www.chipandco.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/crowds.png). Stand-by lines for some popular rides like Soarin' and Test Track can get to over 3 hours. Even Swiss Family Treehouse can have hour long waiting lines. You need to use fastpass wisely, don't expect to "see and do everything," and make any buffet or table service restaurant reservations when you can start to do so 180 days out.

The dates that you have selected are the largest crowds of the year and often MK will close to guests due to capacity issues. Unless you love being in a sea of people, I would choose a different date.
