I finally told my DD7 she could get a kitten. I'm not sure if I should get her a male or female. We will be getting the kitty from our local shelter. Can any cat owners please help me out in how to choose? Any other helpful info you can give me also please. Thank you!!

In my experience, the sex of the cat doesn't matter as much as the temperment.

You don't choose the cat the cat chooses you. I would suggest takeing dd with you to the pet store and see which kitten comes to her and interacts with her the best.

I would recommend a female kitten because males can sometimes be aggressive and mark territory even after neutering. Make sure the female is spayed. Make sure you have a litter box that doesnt have big sides on it so the kitty can get in and out when they are little and after the kitten eats take it to the litter box. EVentually the kitten will learn (if not already housebroken) that's where it should go. Keep the kitten inside too please. You dont want your DD's heart broken when the kitten doesnt come home one night.

It doesn't really matter if it your first cat, but I have been told when you get a 2nd, it is easier if they are not the same sex.

Most shelters will let you do a meet and greet with the animals. Pick one at a time and see which one seems to be the most interested. Like someone else says, a kitten will pick YOU! Don't be surprised if you feel like taking them all home.

Basically, that's how it works. That's how we [were] chose[n by] our two cats. The people at the shelter can also give advice as to which kitten has which kind of personality.

If you don't have any pets already, though, I would recommend getting two kittens from the same litter. They'll play with each other and entertain themselves better than having just one left alone by itself.

ITA about 2 kittens from the same litter. We have a brother/sister and they are the best of buds. They're very different personality wise, though. One (female tortiseshell) is very aloof towards people, but likes the dogs. The male, orange tiger is a cuddler with anyone willing to take him.

I will add that all of the yellow/orange tiger boy-cats I've owned have been the best. Even our vet agrees that there's something special about them.

I took my DS to the animal shelter, he picked a cat that was in a top cage, she was about 2 years old - not a kitten. He had no interest in the kittens. We didn't make our decision that day and went back and he still wanted her, there was no swaying him towards any other cat.

She is a wonderful cat, we couldn't ask for better.

The gender won't matter as long as you get them neutered (which you should do, to prevent more unwanted kitties making their way to animal shelters).

Advice? Kittens go real quick. If you want a really warm fuzzy feeling inside, get an older cat - far less hassle for you and these guys really need homes.

I second the thought of looking towards an older kitten or cat. Kittens are wild a and crazy--they will run around all night, yowl, etc. They don't usually get still enough to cuddle. Older kittens or cats are definitely more calm and cuddly. There are many cats at the shelters who have been surrendered by their owners, because they moved, had a baby or even died. When I adopt my next cat, it will be an older one, because I know there are so many that need homes.

In my experience, neutered males are more laid back and sweet and cuddly. Females can be sweet, too, of course, but tend to be more skittish and feisty.

I also like the idea of an older kitten.....

As an owner of 6 cats. I have to agree that they choose you........but I have found that my males are alot more loveable and cuddly than the females. At one point I had 9 and would have to say the same thing, at least for me the males are alot more loving.
