Choosing a different UY for a second contract?

I'd appreciate some input.

Currently own 160 points at VWL with a Dec UY. This has worked great for our December stays at VWL.

Looking to add a second 150-200 point contract at BWV, specifically for F&W trips in October. Am thinking a September or October UY would be best, in case we have to cancel the October F&W trip.

Does this logic override the convenience of purchasing a Dec UY for the new BWV contract? I am not too concerned with the future ability to need to combine points for a high-point stay.

It would work if you use the points like you say you plan to. We have two Sept contracts and one Dec contract, but the Dec is the same as one of the two Sept contracts. So we often transfer points from one to the other to make a full night. Otherwise, we have to make two separate reservations and get them linked. And they way they get linked these days isn't that great. You still check out and check in and with Magic Bands, you have a second set of MBs.

it takes a little more effort to keep track of multiple UYs, but if you are organized, it's not that big of a deal. sounds like you understand what you are doing and have a good plan.

I have 2 use years and 4 home resorts. It's not too difficult. It is only a pain when you are combining reservations and/or points at the 7 month mark. But not too bad. I like having two use years. I've even been tempted to add a third.

I am a very organized person but when we had 2 UY I really did not like it at all. Of course we had major problems with MS when transferring the points (for xmas) and it took them 6 weeks to get it straight! Good ole "IT"! For me it just was much easier to have same UY since we do combine the contracts when we have points left over in each contract for a few extra nights if we can pull it off. We ended up selling our 2nd UY and when adding on I will only look at Aug UY just to make it simple. As PP stated it is doable I just cannot be bothered after my experience.

Thanks, all, for taking the time to give me your thoughts.

I'm going to think about it some more. Even though I don't think we will have a need to combine points at 7 months, I can imagine scenarios where we might want to fit in a trip to Aulani or VGC with kids, which would take a lot of points, and easier to do if in the same UY.

The risks of having to cancel an Oct trip with a Dec UY are probably not high, and it wouldn't be the end of the world.

Just weighing the ease of use vs potential mitigation of risk, and it's probably a 50/50 decision ;)

We have two UYs and it was fine because they are both different resorts and I always used the points at 11 months out and treated them like two different timeshares. Easy!

However, we recently added on another contract at VGC and after waiting over 6 months, the UY that came up (and with last year's points, too) was Feb, not June, so it's a bit confusing. I think I will either have to transfer the points I need each UY to one VGC UY so that I can combine them, or link reservations. I made a December reservation using the two UYs and have to call MS to link them. Hopefully this will be easy to do. I haven't called MS yet...the phones had been too busy with holiday bookings.

I suppose I should do this soon, in case they recommend that I transfer the points to one UY and then rebook. It's just one night that I had to book separately. And it's VGC, so no MagicBands to worry about. Do you think linking will be fine :confused3?

Given the current rules and for that exact situation, I'd do 2 UY's with Sept/Oct. IF you had to back up to June, I'd likely stick with Dec.

Thanks for your input Dean. I do think Sep/Oct is the best choice. If we ever want to book at Aulani or VGC, I'd probably just rent or do a cash reservation, since I don't like to play the waiting game.

We will be staying at the Beach Club Villas in February, and have a 1-bedroom Boardwalk View room booked for April. I want to make sure my husband is happy with BWV (but I will be checking for decent Sep/Oct contracts there in the meantime :) )

For anyone just considering DVC who might read this - I do highly recommend staying at the resort before you buy, if at all possible. We rented points at VWL, and fell in love with it - which was a total surprise - but that led to our first contract.
