Have any of you ever heard of Cholesterol being over 900? A friend of mine just came back from the doctor and told me her blood results shower her cholesterol over 900. How could that be right? I begged her to call the doctor to confirm that number but she said the doctor double checked it and was bery concerned. I knew a person that had cholesterol at 500 and he died of a heart attack. I don't know whether to be concerned that she is very ill or that her doctor is crazy.

That seems wrong or I'm wondering how it is that she's not hospitalized already. Anything over 200 is supposed to be bad, so I can't even imagine 900.

Holy ****, I didn't know cholesterol could get that high. Wow! I hope the doctor put her own cholersterol reducing drugs!

Here's an article I just found that mentions somebody with a 600 cholesterol level. The doctor in that case found that almost impossible to believe. I think 900 may be a mistake. I'm not sure that can really happen after reading this article! Regardless, the best of luck to you and your friend. I hope she is ok!

OMG...that cannot possibly be right....???? :confused3 My girlfriend is 295. She is terribly out of SHAPE. She is 52yo and is overweight. Now my son's 20yo girlfriend (who runs in Marathons) is 298 sooo what is up with that...my son's dgf has a serious history in the family....dgf was 398 in October and working with a trainer all winter long while training for a 26 mile marathon was the KEY....as she had her's redone Easter and was down 100...BUT still HIGH....she is barely 120lbs. SOOOOO :confused3 !!!

OMG, OP...I don't want to scare you but HIGH cholestrol can lead to HEART ATTACK!!!

I know that I have seen patients results at my old position in the 700's cant say if your friends is right or not but I know that 700 is possible.

I am theorizing that this may be her triglycerides...at least I would hope so.

This is like Maple Syrup running through their veins.

High cholesterol can occur regardless of size/weight/shape. I don't know all the factors, but there are other things that have a bigger effect on a person's cholesterol levels than their weight. Sounds like your son's gf is doing a good job of reducing her cholesterol, but the common misconception is that it's directly related to weight.

My mother weighs about 80 lbs less than me and hers has always been high and mine has always been average. Go figure!

This is the first thing I thought of also.

High and low cholesterol can run in familes. Its proven that there can be a strong hereditary link. I know of a vegetarian marathon runner who has super high cholesterol and has had two heart attacks already. Family history plays a strong part. Its not always about how out of shape you may or may not be. Although, don't get me wrong, its always better to eat right and exercise.

Yes, it's possible. My uncle's hit 1000. He's in the worst shape of his life and has many many medical problems. It's lower now, but it was there at one point.

Diet as well as genes can factor in your cholesterol.

I was about to say the same thing. My DF is 6'4" and 180 pounds and has high cholesterol. His weak spot is hot dogs. He sneaked one in this weekend and I didn't catch him till he was on his last bite

It doesn't have a thing to do with being overweight because his dad is just as skinny as he is and is in the same boat. So was his grandfather who passed 3 years ago.

BTW I have NEVER heard of a reading of 900.

My dad's cholestrol was over 400 and his brother's was over 1000. It's probably genetic. They both had heart disease & diabetes. Dad was slender built, worked out and was in great shape. His brother was overweight and sedentary. Dad died 4yrs ago :guilty: and his bro is going strong.

My dad hit 2000 in 1987 when he had a heart attack. He had zero thyroid function, leading to such a high number. The blood separated from the fat in the tube. It looked like gravy.
Needless to say, he was very sick.

I've never heard of anyone having levels that high that did not have a gentic problem. My db had levels at 385 once when he was young and thin. The dr put him on drugs to bring it down. Since he was adopted it was hard to establish whether this was gentically based but the dr believed so since db's lifestyle wasn't sedentary and he wasn't overweight (then, lol! Now he's got a spare tire thing going)

Much more important than your cholesterol number is the ratio of your HDL and LDL. The newer thinking is that this ratio is far more important than your cholesterol reading. (not that running around with high numbers is a good thing) Some people can have high cholesterol but have a good ratio and be fine. Others can have normal cholesterol and have a bad ratio. That's not good! You want your HDL high and your LDL low! :)

Back to your regularly scheduled post.....

That was my thought because she is diabetic and slightly over weight. Her thyroid and kidney function is perfect, blood pressure 110/60. It would totally freak me out.

Wow, some high numbers out there. I'm going to have oatmeal for dinner!

I know a person, ex-husband of a family friend, who has a genetic liver disorder and his counts have gotten that high. very dangerous (for him anyway) and he has to be treated and monitored routinely. So yeah it is possible though not very common i wouldn't think. Of course I'm not a Dr. so I really have no idea

Don't panic, but make sure that doctor double and triple checks it, then starts medication, if need be, right away. DH had cholesterol around 400 14 years ago. His father had died of a heart attack at 51 yo and DH was in his 40s. The doctor was so shocked that he repeated it twice. And this was before Statins, I think, so for several years he just took Niacin and made dietary and lifestyle changes. Now he's on Crestor and his cholesterol is around 170.

Simba's Mom, good for DH! From 400 to 170 is fantastic. DF started taking Crestor yesterday as soon as she left the Doctor. I won't panic but it's hard not to worry. She is a friend and mentor and beloved faculty member of the university where I work, and my supervisor. We work at the school where, in April a truck crossed the median and hit one of our university vans killing 4 students and 1 employee. Then finding out 5 weeks later that the identity of one of the deceased girls had been switched with one of the girls recovereing in a hospital. I just don't want anything else to happen. :sad1:
