Choking warning urged for food labels

Hmm, I read something that doctors wanted hotdog companies to change the shape of hotdogs. What the heck are they going to change to? I'm not eating a hotdog patty. It's a hotdog for crying out loud!

Where did it say "booklet of warnings"? One little label that would be made as part of the packaging.

I just don't see it as being as expensive as COBRA.

You just don't see where this is going. Soon, there will be way more required warnings than can fit on a package. They're going to HAVE to have the warnings printed separately. Or completely redesign the packaging. Either one would affect the price to the customer or will cost someone their job to pay for it.

It isn't just "one little label". What in the world makes you think that "they" won't come up with something else about hot dogs that we need to be warned about?

... We are saying that if this raises awareness and educates someone who didn't know or realize the chocking hazards of certain foods then what is the harm??

So, the question becomes, would you regulate it - force companies to put these labels on their product? Also, if over half of the companies in the US already do this voluntarily, doesn't that prove that adding this to the labels isn't working?

Very interesting point you have there.

Also, how much of your tax dollars do you want spent on the members of congress discussing how hot dogs should be labeled?

Me - ZERO!

I'll say it again. ASININE!

I can see it now. Ballpark will cash in on this, create a "new" kid-friendly hot dog...with cartoons on the packaging....advertise them on Saturday mornings and Nickelodeon....Kids will be BEGGING for the new, cool, flat hot dogs. Parents will cave in at the grocery store to shut the kids up. Cha-ching! for Ballpark!:rolleyes1

on re-shaping the hot dog - how much do you think it would cost for a hot dog factory to completly re-tool for a newly shaped hot dog?

This is just so stupid.

Really? The label on other items is just that a label. I haven't bought any products that have started coming with booklet. They just have the one label.

There is a LOT about hot dogs that need to be warned about, but that is for another day.

Its not just that hot dogs are a choking hazard. Its the type of choking hazard that they are and the fact that they are particularly dangerous.

Did any of you not know that someone could hang themselves with rope or string? But, yet many kids died by hanging from blinds. What did they do? Put a label on the blinds and send out kits or directions to change the blinds so that the hazard would no longer be present. Now blinds are not made with the same type of cord. Like I said, one step in removing the hazard.

Why on God's green earth would any of you care if the shape of hot dogs are changed? That would be a good thing. It would remove the need for these labels that everyone seems to think is going to the fall of society as we know it.

Did anyone else notice that in the article linked in the OP, it said Oscar Meyer has already put choking warning labels on their products. It didn't mention a booklet of warnings. ;)

Has this labeling negatively affected Oscar Meyer's profitability? Have people lost jobs due to this? That might make a good case study for those who are expressing concern about those issues.

More to the point - if over half already have this labeling and it isn't working, then it doesn't work, so stop pushing it...

:thumbsup2

Not sure about a label because once everything has a warning label, no one will read them. It is something parents should know, though, either from experience, a parenting class, or their pediatrician. When my kids were little, I used to cut hot dogs into quarters lengthwise, so they would have four skinny strips on a bun. I quartered and sometimes peeled grapes as well. And oranges--I took the membrane out and cut them really small.

The only time I ever had to do the Heimlich Maneuver was on my son for getting a big wad of bacon down his throat (he was 10). Scared me to death, but I've never heard of warnings about bacon. It worked, though. He pretty much barfed it out and was better, though I shook for a couple hours afterward.

Interesting enough last summer a group of Vegans in New Jersey brought a lawsuit against hot dog makers in order to carry a warning label that states- Warning: Consuming hot dogs and other processed meats increases the risk of cancer."
Anyone in Jersey notice this warning on their package? (oh, that doesn't sound right)

Yeah, I looked for a link and couldn't find one.

a little ot, but not really, did you know that PANCAKES are a choking hazard? I know of a toddler who choked on cut up ones. I think it was the pancakes/syrup combination. Had never even heard of it before she died.
