I've been posting on the Disney Resort/planning boards for my summer trip.Since everyone is so helpful/informative I thought someone may be able to give me info.I have been researching chocolate labs but can't seem to find a good breeder.I live in the Northeast but are willing to drive as far as South Carolina to get one.I'm looking for one that would be born in the summer May/JUne so it would be ready in August(after our trip)
Thanks :goodvibes

upstate new York...dont know if this close enough for you

http://search.netscape.com/ns/boomf...r the link.Do you know anyone that used them?

Is there any particular traits you're looking for in your lab? Any plans to maybe use this dog in obedience or agility trials, or is there a particular "look" you're interested in - English (the more traditional look w/ wide head and chest), American (more leggy), etc. Personality ?? - lots of drive, big baby, etc.? I'm not an expert on labs (have just owned a couple) but there are so many different characteristics out there - since it's such a popular breed - that narrowing down what you want a little could be a big help in both finding a breeder who meets your needs AND getting a dog that really fits what you want... They can be such wonderful dogs - I envy you getting a puppy  (how quickly I forget how much work they are!)

Are you set on a pup from a breeder? Labs are quite popular, and www.petfinder.org usually has LOADS from rescue sites all over, and you can usually snag a pup as well.

I don't seem to "like"the english type quite as much,to me they aren't as sleek looking but they are still cute ofcourse.I also think they tend to be heavier/stockier and I really would like a female chocolate lab no bigger than 65 lbs preferably. We are willing to go through all the proper training with the dog(I've joked to my dh that we've read more books on puppies than children before we had them lol)
Thanks for any info :flower:

Lots of good info on the Labrador Retriever Club website (Labrador Retriever Club Inc. ) . There's a Breeder's Directory you can check, at least it's a good place to start. Also look for a website for local Lab Clubs as they typically have links to local breeders (that's how we researched our present dog) You might also look for a dog show near you. Even tho it sounds like you aren't looking for a show dog, this is a great way to look at dogs and talk to breeders (tell them you're looking for pet quality with a good disposition). You could also go to field trials for the same purpose, although a field lab may have more drive than you're looking for in a pet. Personally I wouldn't go too far for a puppy - especially a popular breed like a lab - as I want to see the parents and get a good handle on the breeder and what they're breeding for. The idea of a rescue may also be worth pursuing - that can be a wonderful way to add a dog to your family, and probably the most cost effective too.
HTH and Good luck!

Ok, it's the middle of the night and I can't sleep (darn cold medicine :( )..... The Lab website doesn't list as many breeders as I'd thought but still check if. I googled "Labrador Retriever Breeders" and got a lot of hits. Here's one that has a LOT of links to specific breeders and their website Lab links . It will time consuming to go thru all these links tho - but you see lots of nice labs :) . There are other good website that are easier searches but can't remember what they are-will call a friend later today and get those. Definitely not as many chocolates out there so it may take a lot of legwork to find the one you want...

Thanks for checking for me.I hope you feel better!
I have looked at oodles of sites on Lab Breeders I guess what I was hoping for is someone to say"I have a 1 yr old Choc lab from .......... they're the best because...." I know that's probably too easy!lol
I like your ideas about going to dog shows,I'll definitely try to do that
.

Well we have an 8 month old Chocolate Lab that we got here in Texas. Although I know that won't help I thought I would throw out my best advice. Everyone told us to get around a 2 year old lab. No- I wanted a baby that would curl up in my lap and I would hold and love on, WRONG! We specifically went to a breeder that had 5 Chocolate Labs in the same litter so we would have a choice. We did all the research and watched the girls for about 45 mins before we chose "Jasmine" (had to be Disney of course). We chose her because she was the least hyper of the bunch. After what we have been through the last 6 months, I pity the other owners :teeth:

Jasmine is one busy dog. Quite a handful so far. We love her and we would not trade her for anything now, but boy I have my days.

She has been in training and that has helped (a little) but be prepared for a lot of work. If you are the gone all day you might rethink a lab puppy. You might come home to find your house/crate/yard destroyed.

My DH works out of the house and she is rarely out of his sight but she still can tear up a remote faster than I can say "DROP!!"

Good Luck and I hope you love your new dog as much as love our new addition.

We got our "Bella" at a farm in Dighton MA. A friend of mine also got her lab there too. Both dogs are great!!

Here is the information:

Stonehill Farm

The breeders name was Bill.

Good luck

Have Chocolate Lab breeders also breeded out the jowls? I had a wonderful black lab and he had the jowls-I love the look. Sometime next year, I'll be looking to get another lab (DH thinks we're going Schipperke, because he wants a small dog).

I got the 'runt' of the litter-and he was mighty big! You'll love having a lab-so smart!

I LOVE Chocolate labs. I have a 6 yr old girl named Kadie. We call her Kadiemonster b/c shes a nut. I'm not sure if you have done any research on the breed but something that we as previous yellow lab owners were unaware of was that the chocolates are crazier than the yellows and blacks. My 6 year old, though much calmer than when she was as a puppy is still crazy and energetic for lack of a better word.

I am not at all advising against getting one, she is my baby, and I love her. Just make sure you have plenty of space for your new addition to run around. You are going to want to tire her out sometimes! :)

Good Luck!
