Who has eaten at Chipotle?

I've eaten there twice and I loved the burritos I got, but both times I got something that was a little too spicy and made my meal a little less enjoyable. I got the mildest salsa I could get, so I don't think that was it. The only things it could be are the black beans, rice or meat (carnitas or steak). Anyone know what would have been spicy?

I want to get food from there for dinner tonight, so I need to figure this out. The people at the one I go to aren't very helpful. The first time I went there, I asked what was spicy, so I could avoid it. All they told me was the hot salsa. :sad2:

Love Love Love Chipotle.

I always get a veggie burrito bowl with lots of rice, black beans, lots of tomato salsa (very mild), cheese, sour cream and guac on the side.

Sometimes mine will be a little spicier than others. I usually figure it is because some of the spicy salsa dripped in and sometimes there is something in the guac that has some spice to it, but not always.

Holy Guacamole, I LOOOOVE Chipoltle. One just opened near me and I am BESIDE myself!!

Did you get the fresh salsa, by any chance (the one with hunks of tomatoes vs. pureed tomatoes)? That is mild, but there is a pepper or something in it that can bite you back every now and then.

Otherwise, of the items you mentioned, I'd say it's more likely that the meat could have been too spicy for you.

I like spicy, so it's harder for me to detect.

Hmm, I don't know what it could be, either. I've never noticed anything spicy in Chipotle food besides the salsa. Maybe the mild salsa is still a little spicier than you like? My only suggestion would be to ask for the salsa on the side. Or try a naked burrito sometime. It's easier to take bites of each ingredient separately to figure out which one it is.

I always get the salad with steak, and I've been told a couple of times that the steak is the spiciest of the meats, but I think that's why I love it!

I always eat salad with carnitas and pico de gallo--the kind of chunky salsa--so I know they are not spicy. I did get steak tacos once for my nephew and they were spicy. I'm a real wuss when it comes to spicy food, though.

I love Chipolte!
One of the meats (I think it is the steak, as a previous poster said) is pretty spicy. The rest are not. I almost always get the chicken, which is not spicy at all.
Might have to get me some this weekend now that you brought it up. :)

The chopped tomato salsa and the corn salsa both have small pieces of jalepeno in them, if you get a bit (or a bigger piece) it can be spicy. I had the "medium" salsa a few days ago (I ordered chips and salsa on the side) and it was not overly spicy, maybe they will let you try that, OR you can always ask for the salsas on the side, then you can get more then one to try. :)
I always get the chicken but I've tried the steak, both are very good but not spicy by themselves. I usually get tacos (you can order them singly, I usually get 2) but DBF loves the burritos, oh I've done the salad and it's delish!!!! And the burrito bowl is fun too. :)

I can't do spicy either. And I JEALOUS you have a Chipotle!

I always got the Chicken burrito with black beans, mild salsa with just a bit of the corn salsa because it's spicier.

The mildest burrito I've found is the fajita style with carnitas. The mild salsa have little bits of jalapeno in it, so you can skip it or ask for it on the side in a little cup.

It's good, but they put it down the street from On The Border (excellent sit-down Mexican food) and Qdoba (Mexican fast food, just like Chipotle) so that whole area is over-saturated with Mexican. I don't see them all surviving, and Qdoba is in a much better spot than Chipotle.

The food is okay; not great but not bad, imho.

:) I'm eating Chipotle right now!

The steak and chicken are spicy meats IMO. I usually get a bowl with black beans, onions and peppers, chicken, the corn salsa, sour cream, cheese and lettuce. It's a little spicy for me but then I am a wimp when it comes to spicy dishes

LOVE this place!!!!

I don't do any corn salsa's at all, which is one of their milds.

And I HATE chucks of tomatoes, so their other mild sauce is out as well.

The green med salsa is what I always do and it is usually only half a ladle at that. I do find that the hottness of the salsa varies from visit to visit. I take that as who actual put it together and how hot the peppers are that they are using. I know from crop to crop the hottness can very.

I have yet to try the red salsa - if the med salsa gives me heartburn, why try the hotter stuff and make it worse.

And carnita's bowls are the bomb!!! That with a bag of their chips - yummmmm!!

LOVE LOVE LOVE Chipotle but I heard there are a lot of calories so I tend to make it a very rare treat. If you don't like the salsa there you can easily just make your own pico de gallo with less chili and maybe a bit more cilantro. I do think it is the beef that is spicy

OK, this just shocked me. Every On the Border I've ever seen has gone out of business because they are SO bad.

Where's the one good one? :rotfl:

Ok this is what their website says.

Steak - Lean steak marinated for hours in our smoky, spicy chipotle pepper adobo, then grilled to a juicy, medium-rare. This might be a part of the issue.

Carnitas - Naturally raised pork seasoned with thyme, bay, juniper berries and cracked black pepper. Braised until meltingly tender. Nothing jumps out at me, unless someone got heavy handed on the cracked blk pepper.

For their salsa - not sure which one you got.

Corn (mild) - Sweet, succulent corn, blended with roasted poblano peppers, jalapeño peppers, red onions and freshly chopped cilantro. Sweet with a little heat.

Fresh Tomato Salsa (mild) - Chopped red, ripe sweet tomatoes, mixed with red onions, jalapeño peppers and freshly chopped cilantro for a mildly tangy, refreshing taste.

Tomatillo-Green Chili Salsa (med) - A distinctive combination of tomatillos, tomatoes, jalapeño peppers, red onions, freshly chopped cilantro and several spices.

Rice - Steamed white rice tossed with freshly chopped cilantro, a dash of citrus juice and a little salt. Tastes so good for 4 ingredients.

This mostly surprises me coming from you. Chipoltle is famous for having pretty high standards for their ingredients. Don't call me on it, I haven't researched it, but one of their claims to fame is, for example, using fresh, local produce, when possible. They also have standards for their meats as well, though I'm not sure what those are exactly.

ETA....Ok, I checked. It's right on their website. Food with integrity: http://www.chipotle.com/en-US/fwi/fwi.aspx

Carnitas (pork) is the mildest of the meats. All the rest have some spiciness to them.

I basically get pork, peppers and onions, rice, corn, sour cream, and lettuce (no salsa). With that combo, there is ZERO spice.

We've eaten in two of them, one here in Woburn, and one in Connecticut somewhere. They are the best chain Mexican restaurants in the Northeast afaic.

I think you must be thinking of some other chain. I seem to remember some other Mexican or Tex-Mex restaurants that had the word "Border" in them.

Yup, and it tastes healthy, too.
