2. A communist nation can lockdown their citizens in ways a democracy just could never do.
It'll happen. Check out Italy.
Even with Italys lockdown they have liberties the Chinese didn't. No one in Italy had a MP knock on their door, take their temp, and throw them into a covid-19 camp against their will.
Their healthcare system is past capacity. Imagine if you had a heart attack. People are going to start dying for reasons other than COVID-19.
No arguing that. Im not sure which point you're replying to.
What you've got to understand about China- they have literally locked down the population in areas with active cases- in some cases even welding all doors to an apartment building shut, except for one, so that they can monitor who comes and goes. The lock down in China is unprecedented, and even with it, it has taken months for things to "cool off" in areas like Wuhan. Also, many experts believe that once said lock down lets up, it is just going to flare right back.
In the US? Sorry, that kind of lock down will never work here. Hence the fear that 10s of millions could become infected.
They just announced a stay at home order for Los Angeles county. Over 21 million in CA alone under a stay at home. I think more cities will be following suit in the coming days and weeks.
Yes I totally agree. I was just pointing out that we are now seeing entire cities shut down. Something we would never imagined a month ago.Yes... however a stay at home order is significantly different from what China did. In China, you heard your neighbor cough next door? You call a number, and a half dozen guys in hazmat suits show up, wrestle your neighbor out of his apartment, and whisk him off to a quarantine facility. That kind of totalitarian enforcement will not be happening in the US.

It is all so surreal.

As the saying goes...”this too shall pass”. Not soon enough, unfortunately. Stay safe everyone!Surreal is my "Word of 2020" so far, and totally encapsulates how this whole thing feels right now.![]()
To the original poster China did nothing correct. This isn't their first virus and they let it get out of their country (again). Had they really instituted Draconian measures immediately and had control of this virus it wouldn't be spread through out the world.
No one knows the real infected or dead numbers from China and we never will. At least in Democracies we can get an attempt at real data and eventually get answers. In China the oppressive government oligarchy controls the narrative through violence and even death for those who fall out of line. How many people will die and suffer (unintended consequences) due to an inability to respond quicker and contain this.
The attached article says for weeks after the initial outbreak the Chinese government said this virus showed no proof of spreading from human to human. Even though health officials were telling them the opposite.

I posted this in the other thread but same holds here. I just find it is absurb to think China did anything right or is ever reporting the truth. Their is no narrative except the Communist Party narrative. It spread throughout the world, they didn't contain or stop it!
