My 5 year old has requested a desk for christmas in order to do her kindergarten homework - I've been looking, but not finding anything that I love, does anyone have any suggestions. I'd like the desk to also work for just plain art stuff also. This is the gift that she was asked santa for!!!!

Thanks!

In Ohio, we have a place called Bunk and Loft Factory and they make wooden furniture. It is really nice quality and would hold up for years!

Walmart sells a desk by step 2 it has spot for crayons, paper and even has a light. I bought it for my dd8 when she was 3 and it has held up really well my dd5 uses it now.

We have this one too. Plenty of storage space for crayons, markers, etc. And our 2 are 4 & 5 and it gets a lot of use. Little tikes (check littletikes.com for styles) also offers one similar to this as well as a wooden one as well if you wanted to go furniture style not plastic. The only downside to wooden one is not storage. I think toys r us/babies r us offers both step 2 & little tikes selections.

Did you check Ikea?

I have a 6 year old in first grade whom I am currently homeschooling. We purchased a Little Tikes desk for her about a year and a half ago. She loves the desk for art projects...lots of room to work and places to store all of her supplies. However, when it comes to writing work, the desk is not suitable at all because the chair and desk height do not align in a way for her that she can easily manuever her arm. Not sure I am explaining clearly, but if you think about where your arm needs to be placed to write and then look at how the Little Tikes desks and the Step Two desks tend to seat the kids, you will see what I mean. My daughter still uses her Little Tikes desk for art projects, but for school work she works at a wood desk with a good chair. I would encourage you to shop for the desk with your daughter and make certain that the chair and desk height work for her (bring paper and pencil and have her write her name and letters and such). Happy shopping :-)

I am in the same boat. I also have a 5 yo DD. I feel that she is too tall for the little tikes or step 2 desk. I feel that she needs a wood students desk. The only problem is that the only desk I saw and liked was at Bob's furniture, but was in the range of $500. I am not sure if I want to spend that for a 5 year old. I am currently looking at unfinished desks.

Thanks I did, but they really only have things that are suitable for a computer and we're not there yet.

I like the idea of Step 2, but I'm just afraid she will outgrow it in a year or two, being that she will be six in April - thoughts?

Thanks
Debbie

I bought this for my daughter from santa last year. She was 4 then, and she just turned 5. She uses her desk every day. It is the perfect size for her. :teacher:

we have this one also.... I love it!

Have you tried Target? They have nice wooden desk and also come in white. Some come with a bookcase that have some extra storage.

Do you have any unfinished furniture places or Millworks stores nearby? Their prices are reasonable. I live in RI, and we have a mill store that sells a wooden student desk. It is not finished, you have to do that yourself, or for a price, they will put the finish on for you. It might be what you are looking for. Last year, on BF. they had a 40% off any one item in the store coupon. I believe there is a Millworks store in Fall River MA. Hope this helps!

I don't know where you are in MA, OP, but there's also one in Canton. Millstores.com

A couple of years ago I wanted a desk for my son's room that actually looked like furniture and not like a toy. We looked and looked and finally ended up at an unfinished furniture store. We found a beautiful wood desk for about $300. We added a light stain and varnish and it looks great and hopefully will be something he can take with him.

My daughter has a Disney Princess desk that I got a couple years ago at Big Lots, but I have seen them at Walmart since. They are actually located in the infant's section. I was a little nervous buying it because I didn't know if it would be big enough. I comes in a fairly small box and needs to be assembled. It was plenty big, and she's still using it now. She's a big 7 year old, weighs about 80 pounds. She does her homework in it every night, and lots of coloring. It has one attached arm that comes around the side, and the seat lifts up for storage. It was only about $25, so even if she can only use it a couple years, it's no big deal, and it's easy to move around. We even use it for meals in front of the TV sometimes. They have other characters too, I know Dora was one. I don't see it on Walmart's website, but I have seen it in store recently.

I went to the mill store web site. They have an early bird 40% off coupon for Friday and 30% off the rest of the weekend. I think I will going for a ride to Nashua on Friday.

This one would only be $96 with the 40% coupon. In MA you will have to add tax. I am going to NH, tax free.

That looks like a fun store, wish we had one around here!

DS doesn't get homework in first grade, but he'll probably need something for next year. I like the Little Tykes mission desk, but it looks pretty small. We have an unfinished furniture store nearby and I always seem to end up there when we need something!
