Childrens clothes sizing

Our trip for next year is starting to come together although its changed a bit since originally planned. We are now going to New York for 6 nights following our DCL cruise. I've been looking on the Macy's website at all the things we are going to buy while we are there.
DD has seen a dress that she's fallen in love with that would be perfect for formal night on the cruise. And its soooo cheap. Of course they ship to Australia. But I'm not sure what size to buy. I should having been 5 times but I've always had the kids with me when I'm shopping. Is kids sizing the same? I'm thinking that I need to buy a size bigger than we buy here but I'm not sure.

Normally I find them pretty much the same, but like here can be variances. EG, I normally find a size difference in Target compared to Big W for DD for example. For somewhere like Macy's the size / measurement chart will probably be pretty accurate.

Just had another thought - if you're will to risk it, grab it now then if it doesn't fit take it back whilst you're in NY, I'm guessing they will do in store returns.

They are the same; with one difference. Most of the kids sizes will also have an "X" version i.e., 5 and 5X. The X represents a half year difference. So if you're buying summer clothes in August, and your child is or closer to the 5 age group, you'd buy the 5. If your child is still 5 but closer towards 6, you'd get the 5X.

Thanks everyone. I'm going to go ahead and buy it. Thats great that I can do an instore return if need be. I'm hoping I wont need to. She is a size 8 now. The dress comes in an 8 and then a 10 so I'm going to try the 10.
