I have a niece who will be cruising in the fall who has downs syndrome. She is almost 10 and is very self sufficiant. She attends a regular school and is in a regular classroom with no one on one assisntant. Has anyone out there ever gone on the cruise with a child with downs syndrome? How did it work out in the Oceaneers Lab?

We have a daughter with Asperger Syndrome (mild autism) and she is 11. We plan to try the club but want to leave it up to her as to whether she wants to use it or not. She is very out going but can sometimes have trouble with structure and change. I'm not sure the counselors are ready for her! Our son (9) says he would rather "hang" with us!

Jackie,
Let me know how things work out for you with whether or not your daughter goes into the club, and how they treated and interacted with her. Have a great time on your cruise!

Jackie:

Would you please post back when you return about your daughter's experience in the club. My son is 12 and has Aspergers and we are hoping that he will do well in the club because the club is something he is really excited about. I am just concerned that the club will be too rigid and won't allow him to step away from group activities and get some down time by playing video games, etc. Please let me know how it went for you when you return.

When we cruised in Jan 2001, my son with Down Syndrome had just turned 13 in December. They didn't have a problem with me putting him in the 10-12 year group in the Lab. I didn't want him to be in common grounds. They said I could even sign him up for 8-9's if I wanted. They didn't seem to have any problem with him being there. I was concerned because his speech isn't the clearest. He mostly wanted to be at the pools and play ping-pong so he only went once to the Lab. On our next 2 cruises I didn't even register him since he didn't use it. Nasi
